RubbaJohnny Posted October 2, 2013 Posted October 2, 2013 I needed to renew my 5 year car and motorcycle recently at Thoeng Motor Dept This was the dea; Asked what was required Old Licence Letter of residence from Immigration Copy of Passport foto and visa page Entry card/stamp 2x copies of all above They had real problems as the visa issued in UK did not have expiry date in Thai only English but very friendly staff allowed me to point to the last entry date. I was a bit concerned this would not yield a 5 year licence. Although no appointments or medical letter needed told show at 10,11 or 1300 only ,different to previous 2 visits as there was to be a Movie so brought girl+ drink.a rather cheerful Benny Hill type joked at having a Falang half expected the test girls to bring round the popcorn and choc ices. Upstairs 4 brief tests,so totally buggred if you cannot climb steep steps. TESTS 1 Colour Blindness with mock traffic light, lady unfamiliar with amber SAY YELLOW 2 Peripeheral vision head on gibbet while lights flash all very Thai 3 Reaction speed pedal /red light replacing my old favourite the string puller! 4 Then a depth of field test judging when 2 pegs in a box move parallel you have remote control like a video game and can shuffle one stick around 7 metres away to and fro until you see them level,Took a while to understand what they were saying but easy once you watch the others. Then a Movie on rd safety with English sub titles.Having driven 58 year they kindly allowed me out first, but despite lots of terms pursuant to road traffic act 2522 and cadastral alws no mention of WEARING A CRASH HELMET. So for 18 years certified to be at large and never once been tested behind the wheel The Bill 505 + 100 for foto for car, ( interesting tax invoce for 93.46 +7% vat) 255 + 100 again for bike foto Grand TOTAL 960 Left clutching 2 credit card sized docs which now say in English Car and Bike Interestingly a price cut as they gave me 6 years perhaps assuming I'll be dead and not soil their car park again with my vintage truck.so 160 baht per year 3 quid or less than a penny a day to be legal. The chap with copy stall and officers seem to have nice shiny cars so there is obviosly a spot of 'overflow'

Thanks. I have presented an electric-bill or house book to obtain a letter of residence & of course the 300 baht charge for the pleasure....
