CHONBURI, Oct 21 – Provincial authorities here have done everything possible to drain Amata industrial park, covered by half a metre of floodwater, according to Industry Minister Prasert Boonchaisuk.

The minister inspected flooding here, meeting with officials from the provincial administration, the Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand (IEAT), and Amata executives yesterday.

Amata is one of the major industrial estates in Chonburi.

Mr Prasert said floodwaters would be immediately flushed into nearby Panthong canal, but that a long-term solution would require improving the existing drainage system.

The industrial park--one of Thailand’s vital economic zones with major investment-- must be protected to ensure investors’ confidence and uninterrupted manufacturing, he said.

He said the dykes surrounding the industrial park must be raised another metre to prevent flooding.

Chonburi Governor Komsan Ekkachai said the floods were due to rising seawater which obstructed outflow from the Bangpakong River.

Viboon Kromadit, Amata chief marketing officer, said the management has worked closely with agencies concerned to monitor the floodwaters which have risen to 30-45 cm above road surface at the Phase 7 zone of the industrial park.

Amata's industrial plants have continued manufacturing without interruption, he said. (MCOT online news)

BANGKOK: -- Amata Corporation, the operator of Amata Nakorn Industrial Estate in Chon Buri, is quickly pumping out water from Phase 7, after 17 factories temporarily shut down operations due to the flood.

Viboon Kromadit, chief marketing officer of the company, said that the situation improved today, as the water level retreated by 15-20cm. In some areas of the road in Phase 7, the water level remains as high as 30-35cm.

He said that the 17 factories temporarily shut down the operations as the surrounding road is flooded, blocking the entry of workers. He insisted that the flood has not yet reached the factories.

He is optimistic that the water level would be only 5cm tomorrow, if there is no more rain. He is confident that the 17 factories would then restart the operations.

The water is being pumped out with help from the Industry Ministry, Chon Buri’s administration and the Navy. Over 100 water pumps are being used, along with over 500 giant sandbags.

CHON BURI, Oct 21 - Amata Nakorn industrial estate in the eastern seaboard province of Chon Buri has sped up its water drainage operations as floodwaters began to recede.

Viboon Kromadit, executive director and chief marketing officer of Amata Corporation, said floodwaters in general have decreased by 15-20 centimetres, and that factories are operating as usual except for 17 factories which earlier announced their temporary closure.

He said the closed factories have products in their stock for three days. The factories were not flooded but their workers could not enter the facilities which were surrounded by floodwaters.

Some roads leading to the affected factories were submerged under up to 35 centimetres of water.

Mr Viboon said floodwaters will recede further if there is no rain, and all 17 factories will be able to resume operations as soon as staff buses could enter the compound.

He said Amata Nakorn has discussed with the Industry Ministry, the Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand, the Royal Thai Navy, Chon Buri province and other concerned agencies about handling the flood situation.

The navy has dispatched ten more boats to help push floodwaters. Together the estate has 43 boats and over one hundred pumps, and about 500 giant sandbags or 'big bags' to be used as barriers to prevent more flooding at high tide. (MCOT online news)

CHONBURI: -- THE AMATA NAKORN Industrial Estate in Chon Buri is facing a severe battle keeping out floodwaters, which have forced 15 factories in its compound to suspend operations.

Another 78 factories outside the protection of estates, mainly in the Northeast, have reportedly been inundated.

The factories in the Amata Nakorn estate are not under water, but have been temporarily closed because of the difficulties their employees are having getting to work.

Some public areas within the estate are inundated. The highest floodwater level is between 30 and 40 centimetres.

"We expect to drain all floodwater from the estate within one or two days, if no more rain comes," Amata Corporation's chief marketing officer Viboon Kromadit said yesterday.

With support from various agencies, more than 100 pumps are working hard to clear all the floodwater. Some 43 boats have also been commissioned to help facilitate the flow of water out of the estate.

Amata Corporation operates the Amata Nakorn estate.

Royal Irrigation Department deputy director-general Suthep Noipairoj said the industrial estate was located in a low-lying area that was prone to take in run-off water from nearby areas.

Suthep said that water drainage would need to be done carefully out of concern for local communities already struggling with floods in the face of high tides. "The industrial estate and authorities will have to minimise the impact on these communities," he said.

Meanwhile, Industry Ministry inspector-general Panithan Jindaphu said 78 factories outside the industrial estates had been flooded, mostly in the Northeast. He calculated the combined damage at about Bt85 million.

Of the total, 70 are small-scale businesses and eight are medium-sized.

These factories are located in 12 provinces: 11 in Ubon Ratchathani, 16 in Si Sa Ket, 13 in Nakhon Nayok, seven in Prachin Buri, five each in Chanthaburi and Chaiyaphum, six in Angthong, eight in Sa Kaew, two in Buri Ram, three in Nakhon Ratchasima and one each in Ayutthaya and Chachoengsao.

"Remedial measures will include waivers of licensing fees. We will also discuss with other agencies the offering of soft loans, as was done in 2011," Panithan said.

BANGKOK, Oct 22 – All factories at the Amata Industrial Estate in the eastern seaboard province of Chonburi have resumed operation after flood waters were pumped out, according to a company executive.

Viboon Kromadit, chief marketing officer of Amata Corporation, said 43 boats and more than 100 pumps jointly drained waters into nearby Bang Pakong River after the industrial park was flooded by 15-20 cm deep, particularly at the Phase 7 industrial project.

Some factories were temporarily shut down after roads in the industrial park were inundated, obstructing accessibility to their plants, he said.

Meanwhile, floods have yet to completely recede in Prachin Buri province in eastern Thailand and officials said it should take less than a week before the situation returns to normal.

In the northeastern province of Nakhon Ratchasima, the main Mitraparb Road was partly submerged at Soong Nern district but provincial authorities were bracing for a new round of floods from the rising rivers in the next few days.

In the trading town of Hat Yai in Thailand’s South, two hours of rain caused water runoff from Ko Hong mountain which flooded the main Kanchanavanij Road and more than 50 houses in the district seat. (MCOT online news)
