Who owns BIG C?

Recommended Posts

BIG C, short for Big Chief I gather, well who owns them? The reason I ask is because I thought they were part of the French Casino group of supermarkets, but, yesterday whilst driving back from Pattaya to Nakhon Sawan I passed a BIG C delivery lorry its stated that on the back end of the taupalin, " A Big C delivery" but at the front end of the taupalin was....................unilever the British/Dutch conglomarate. That was a surprise.

This says it is under Groupe Casino a French mass retailer.

//edit - Seems unilever does some marketing with BigC, especially in Viet Nam.

It actually says that Casino has interests in Big C

in France and abroad, often through interests held in local retailers. Examples include Libertad and Mini Libertad in Argentina, Disco and Devoto in Uruguay, Big C in Thailand,

As far as I know Big C is owned by central group.

Think what ? That it was owned by Central ?

Maybe because they are the founders of Big C and merged with Casino after the 1997 Asia crisis.

If you mean the part in blue, that was taken from the link Tywais provided.

Big C has quite a number of products for sale under the Casino brand, but what

get me peed off is the fact that 99% of their Csino brand products doesn't have

product's description and information in English on them only French and Thai..

Isn't it Dhanin Chearavanont & family? read in Economist years ago they bought Carrefours out...the IMF did a rotten job in the advice it gave Thailand and other parts of S E Asia re the Asian Ec. Crisis...they had little understanding of the region and based their strategy on another area altogether...World Bank and IMF usually attract people like that nearly head French sex-mad creep and Wolfowitz? was it, who put his mistress into a wellpaid position...and Asian countries pay towards their upkeep.

France, and most French people still believe that French is an international language. It's still the official second language of the UN but really, outside of France and former French colonies, its hardly bothered with anymore.

All contract delivery wagons have the name of the customer on the covers and the box wagons have it printed on, they are not owned by Big C.

Click on Big C Thailand on google it will tell you. Big C bought out the large French supermarket chain in Thailand and called them Big C Extra.

Casino products are exactly the same than those sold in France, and at the beginning not intended to be sold outside France ; may be a good occasion to learn an other language ?

For the behavior of Big C in Thailand ( wrong prices and so on ) I think the problems come from Thai staff.

The boss is not Casino, they only have 62 % of the business.

Big C stands for "Big Central". Originally Central opened as Central Supermarket in 1993 and then changed the name to Big C. Due to the Asian financial crisis of 1997, they were forced to sell to Groupe Casino. Big C is listed on the SET.

I know when they started Big C (I believe Big C Ramjadamri (not the original place but the 'Hifi' place opposite was their first outlet)) they were owned by a combination of Central, Robinson and Ahold (The Dutch Tops people).

I have used BigC for many years:never any problem!

I would say at least 50% of the times we go there there are at least one or two items priced higher at the till than on the shelves. They never take responsibility and even try to blame customers for moving the prices about. When the manager turns up then you do get a wai and a khotort, but you have to work at it, first response is denial. They used to give you the overpriced item free but it seems they stopped that (lost too much?) and now the give you the item at the shelf price. Other shops have this problem, but big C is the worst.

Depends on the store ... In Samui Tesco is much worse with their pricing ... I have never had a problem in Big C and the Casino products are very well priced and very welcome... Big C staff better as well ...
