CHIANG MAI: -- The Interior Ministry has been asked by the Transport Ministry to map out proper measure regarding the use of balloons and fireworks in Chiang Mai during the Loy Krathong festival on November 17.

The Transport Ministry is concerned that balloons and fireworks may affect air services during the festive period.

Chiang Mai deputy governor Chana Paengpibul said Thursday that as a precaution for safety measure, some balloons can be released during the day time from 10 a.m. to noon and other balloons should be released after 9 pm on Loy Krathong day.

As for the trading of fireworks, he said that traders must get permission from district officers in respective districts. Violation of the regulation will be liable to one month’s imprisonment and/or a fine of 10,000 baht.

Like people are really gonna follow these guidelines. Glowing balloons at high noon! And wait until 3 hours after it gets dark for liftoff?

Good luck with that one, Mr. Tansportation Minister.

Seems to me, if its a problem, keep the planes on the ground. Only mess with a few hundred passengers, rather than a few hundred thousand celebrants.
