Thai Passport For My Daughter

Featured Replies

My daughter was born 5 months ago and both myself and my wife are foreign.

I just found out today that my daighter is in fact entitled to Thai citizenship and passport, as she was born in Thailand, her parents are both legal aliens, and we are married, so im wondering how to go about getting that citizenship.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Regards

The standard text of the Thai embassy website regarding aquistion of Thai nationailty does indeed say that a child born to a 'legal alien' on thai soil aquires Thai nationality.

BUT....the fact of the matter is that for the purposes of the thai language legislation, to aquire Thai nationality by being born on Thai soil at least one of the parents has to be either a Thai citizen or a Permanent Resident. So where the website says 'legal alien' it actually means permanent resident.

So unless you or your wife is a Thai permanent resident, your daughter is not eligible for Thai nationailty.

I wonder why you would want it for her?

Surely your own nationality opens more doors than a Thai passport ever could!!

Well, as we are living in Thailand, what harm would it do her? It would save any visa headaches, and should the need arise in the future, i wouldnt need to worry about being able to stay here long term, as i could just get a Non 'o' visa to stay here and take care oof her, not that any of this is likely at all.

She currently holds British and Singaporean passports, but, like i said, our place of abode is Thailand, and who knows how long we will be here. It can do no harm in the long run.
