Airport Rail Link reports rise in passenger number

BANGKOK, 21 November 2013 (NNT) – SRT Electrified Train Company Limited (SRTET), operator of the Airport Rail Link, has made known that the number of passengers using the system in November is at a record high.

SRTET said on November 8, nearly 60,000 passengers boarded the Airport Rail Link. The figure set a new record for the company embattled by years of financial losses. From November 1-17, around 48,000 commuters used the train daily on average.

The company said the increased frequency of train arrivals on the City Line significantly contributed to the rise in passenger numbers.

SRTET plans to triple the current number of customers by procuring 7 more trains. In order to boost revenue, the company is also set to expand check-in services for air passengers at Makkasan Station of the Airport Rail Link next year.

Nearly 100,000 Thais suffer from emphysema

Bangkok, 21 November 2013 (NNT) – Around 100,000 people in Thailand have been infected with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, generally known as emphysema.

Emphysema is a lung disease that makes it hard for a person to breathe. As many as 100,000 people in Thailand have suffered from this disease, according to the Public Health Ministry.

Public Health Minister Dr. Pradit Sintavanarong said the major cause of emphysema is smoking and most of the patients are over 40 years of age.

According to the statistics released by the World Health Organization (WHO), 80 million people around the world have come down with the obstructive lung disease, 3 million of those die each year. The WHO has also forecast that the number of people infected will rise by 30 percent in the next 7 years.

Minister Pradit also revealed that there are around 11.5 million smokers in Thailand, adding that the starting age of most smokers is 15, while the average age of regular smokers seems to be younger every year.

The ministry has strict policies in tackling the problem and is keen on reducing the number of new and regular smokers, which will in turn lead to the reduction of lung infections, said the Minister
