Popular Post JRSoul Posted November 28, 2013 Popular Post Posted November 28, 2013 Poor old Mark, he just doesn't get it. He's so intelligent, educated, smart, and yet he just cannot win power legitimately because the people prefer the Shinawatra family to him. so now he is giving tacit support to Thug-sabarns extra parliamentary mob. Patience Mark, the election is under 3 years away, and then you will have another chance to persuade the Thai people that your squeaky clean, government of the intelligent, is really what they want, rather than a decent health system, a decent price for their rice, an end to exploitative rents from landlords etc etc. Good luck with that, Matk, sincerely. Why is a " a decent price for their rice" a function of government? Why should one industry have a guaranteed hugely-over-market price when others haven't, especially when that is encouraging increased production during a world glut? Those Thais working efficiently are having their taxes given away and looted instead of supplying them with government services, and you can't see that they have a right to be angry. That the subsidy is unsustainable and will eventually cause massive pain after massive losses when it collapses, is now happening. Is that the Democrats fault? An end to exploitative rents from landlords could have easily been achieved with a rent freeze on rice land attached to the subsidy legislation. Either PTP was too stupid to foresee rent increases were a likely consequence of a massive subsidy, and that that would undermine the stated aims of the policy, or happy enough to accept corrupt rewards of their policy. After all, aren't the landlords and the MPs from the same families? If the choice is between a "squeaky clean, government of the intelligent" and one of the corrupt and stupid who will buy your vote one way or the other, which do you pick? 3

jdinasia Posted November 28, 2013 Posted November 28, 2013 Dam_nit, I'm sliding back to principles which makes me a "red apologist" I guess, although I'm not to be because I don't believe Yingaling has done squat and this government needs to go. However, what was the cause of that 2010 debacle? Track it back to 2006, and you would be correct. 2010 didn't happen in a vacuum, like they woke up one day and decided to torch the city. What we are seeing right now, which is a replay of 2008, is exactly the lead up which caused 2010. To cherry pick 2010, like a stand-alone incident, is disingenuous. To stop at 2006 is disingenuous as well. What led to the extra-constitutional caretaker government of Thaksin in 2006? It couldn't be Thaksin changing the rules (corruption) and the sale to Singapore, added to the other things that dug him into a pit. You do remember that his behaviour brought people out onto the streets in 2005 and he lost so much credibility that he tried to play the "democracy trumps all" card in an attempt to take the focus off his business dealings right? That attempt failed when other parties didn't play that game with him. He called snap elections and constitutionally could not form a government. He tried for fresh elections and the time ran out. Does that mean it is "legal" to have a coup (to get rid of an extra-constitutional caretaker government?) No Was that government elected? No Thus was that caretaker government legal?...... Now that the silliness of the past has been dealt with .... (it was all crap when the coup happened)... What is the way forward? The current system is broken beyond repair (imho) though I would love to be proven wrong. The only way forward I see is for change of a type that nobody really wants. It must begin by strengthening the checks and balances, making corruption laws that include major financial penalties, and real jail time. Then making sure there s a charter in place that supports the basic concepts of democracy (and not democracy in the form of majoritarianism which some posters on here see as democracy but doesn't fall anywhere near the definition ofmodern liberal democracies.) The need to end money politics and the vast corruption from the top down is paramount to the short term goal of majoritarianism now. 2
Popular Post Melpomene Posted November 28, 2013 Popular Post Posted November 28, 2013 they are not going to win the next election, and so they have decided that their only option, if they are to get into government, is if Sutheps shenanigans result in an appointed government. Or they could try coming up with some policies that appeal to the electorate, if they put as much thought into acting like a proper opposition party as they do into causing civil unrest then they might actually get somewhere. 3

webfact Posted November 28, 2013 Posted November 28, 2013 UPDATE:Abhisit: Democrats will strive to oust the 'Thaksin regime'Hataikarn TreesuwanThe Nation BANGKOK: -- Opposition Democrat Party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva yesterday insisted his party is determined to overthrow the "Thaksin regime", saying the government had lost legitimacy. He said the Democrats are ready to support popular movements conducted within constitutional limits.Abhisit did not rule out the possibility of party MPs quitting in order to conduct the campaign."If it leads us to win the battle, we won't hesitate [to do it] with unity," he said."The Democrat Party is inviting everyone to join us in reforming the party in order to reform Thailand. Our aim is to uproot the Thaksin regime. If we succeed, we in the Democrat Party will not accept any post arising through unconstitutional means," he said.Abhisit was speaking after chairing an urgent meeting with the party's executive committee and MPs to discuss what role the party should play in the protests. Some MPs joining inA Democrat MP, who asked not to be named, said some MPs had decided to join the "anti-Thaksin regime" protests, which are being led by former Democrat MP Suthep Thaugsuban."We appreciate the campaign and wish to become Suthep's main supporters when this parliamentary session ends," the MP said.Even though the government insists it won the last election by an overwhelming majority, this is a "dictatorship of the majority", the source said.He added that at the meeting, MP Pirapan Salirathavibhaga had called on those fighting against the so-called Thaksin regime to be brave enough to break the rules too. However, he said, several other members of the party disagreed with these ideas, especially when it comes to MPs resigning. He warned that the government would continue pushing through several bills even if the opposition MPs left the House, citing a similar case in 2000, when opposition MPs - led by the New Aspiration Party - began quitting to pressure then-PM Chuan Leekpai to dissolve the House. He said Chuan ignored the call and continued working till the end of his term."Similarly in 2010, when red-shirt leaders called on Pheu Thai MPs to leave the House in order to pressure then-PM Abhisit Vejjajiva to dissolve the House, Thaksin posted a message on Facebook advising his party not to do such a thing," he said.-- The Nation 2013-11-29

chainarong Posted November 29, 2013 Posted November 29, 2013 Mark needs to stay on top of the position that un folds hourly with the protesters, and to remain a little distant , the call for elections should now be coming from the protesters, any other alternative way to remove the present administration will not be ethical , the hate for the Shinawatra name is gaining momentum , let the people decided the direction the protests take , after all, the end result they will have to live with, so to all protesters, take care and make the right choices.
boomerangutang Posted November 29, 2013 Posted November 29, 2013 (edited) I see the reality very clearly - on both sides of the divide. The reality is that an unelected mob is trying to usurp power by undemocratic extra parliamentary measures. I find that unacceptable. So would you in your country. Why do you find it acceptable over here?I see it as a growing number of Thais are thoroughly fed up with the do-nothing clowns who are at the helm. Even dyed-in-the-wool Reds are starting to come around and see the Shinawatres for what they are and have been all along: ego-centrists who tell lies and only care about amassing money, and consolidating power which enables them to amass even more money. phuket43 Posted November 29, 2013 Posted November 29, 2013 At the time of writing 42 replies which really doesn't add too much to the debate. The Dems haven't won any election in many years, and with the spearhead of one their senior members, who is not as rich as TS, but equally corrupt, is now trying to tell the voters about the corruption prevalent. Remember, PTP was democratically elected. Yes you will scream about vote buying, rice scheme, first car buyer scheme but this is Thailand. The highly educated Dems never came up with anything like this which could lure the voters.

And Millwall to win the FA Cup in your phantasy world. You are correct in supposing that the majority of Thais want a decent health system, an equitable price for their rice, and effective system of education. They also want an end to cronyism and a total reform of the police force. Did Thaksin give them any of that? Giving an old crone a couple of thou (out of his own pocket ?) making sure that the Press reported it hardly makes him the nation's benefactor.

stoffel45 Posted November 29, 2013 Posted November 29, 2013 (edited) Thaksin's history, in deeds, is a story of unmitigated greed and corruption. The way he and his agents have exploited the Thai people is a testament to his evil and their stupidity. I wish only the very worst for Shinawatra and their parasites. I do believe, that for all his faults, Abhisit was the best of all Thailand's Prime Ministers, with perhaps the exception of Prem Tinsonulonda. That said. PTP - the Shinawatra clan - hold the legitimate numbers of majority in Parliament. Yes this protest staved off a likely civil war in quashing the Shin Amnesty Act in its nascent stage. So well done Thaugsaban and many friends. Yes this protest has shown the Shinawatra clan that they may not ride roughshod over the people with impunity. But now it is time to end it. It is wrong to talk about ending a Democratically elected Government. It is as wrong now as it was when the red-shirt mobs were doing the same - such a short time ago. cup-O-coffee Posted November 29, 2013 Posted November 29, 2013 Looking at the history of the Prime Ministers elected by the House of Representatives, who were elected by the House majority, and comparing that to how their term ended, and the reasons therein, I literally see no change in things. Literally. The events happening now are simply a repeat of what has been going on since 28 June, 1932. It is really quite comical to get caught up in the politics, or the reasons outlying whatever. Nothing has changed. Moreover, what becomes clear to me is that since the age of the Internet, only one candidate has been able to complete on full four year term in office amicably and without dispute. The Internet seems to be merely another caustic weapon for the Thai mind to propagate the angst, hatred, jealousy, bitterness, false sense of pride, stubbornness, resentment, greed, corruptness, turmoil etc, etc. which seems to continually wage a war deep within. As it is the House who elects the Prime Minister, and viewing the history of the House getting rid of their elected Prime Minister soon after, one almost chokes with laughter at the comical drama of it all. They simply cannot seem to elect a Prime Minister and be satisfied with that, and then get down to business and run the country. History shows that Parliament is in a constant state of chaos and battle over their own decisions over whom they elect, and very little seems to get accomplished to the benefit of the citizens of Thailand. A Prime Minister may hold office for two, four year terms, but since the age of the Internet, these Prime Ministers can't seem to hold office for anywhere from 15 days onwards, with the one exception being Police Lt. Colonel Dr. Thaksin Shinawatra, before they are being attacked by House members. How in Hell can anything get done when the one elected to the office of Prime Minister of Thailand is beleaguered by the hounds of hell in no less than 90 days after being in office (on average)? I don't know. How can a striker make a goal when his shirt sleeves are being tugged on and the crowd is yelling at the striker and calling him or her names? Thais love to complain, if for nothing more than to hide the fact that they can't skillfully do anything that benefits others, or merely to hide the fact that they are stealing the baby and the bathwater with it. I did a search on the Internet to find any legacies that any of these Prime Ministers left behind to espouse their achievements. There really isn't anything legitimate to read, because most of the achievement URLs are the Prime Ministers themselves espousing what they did. But when you look at their office term, and the reasons they left office, it's right back to the same old same old greed, corruption, chaos, confusion, etc. So, I can only conclude that this is not about naming any names, or attaching accusations and blame; but rather instead it is about a people with a psyche that beggars the average imagination of any developed brain. Looking at history itself, I can only conclude that this is nothing more than the rule and not the exception. Forget having a government which runs efficiently and makes its nation better all around. No! Rather instead it is a podium for minds (which beggar the imagination) to be in a constant state of quarreling, fighting, creating chaos, hatred, and so on and so on; all apparently because of that one singular cancer: FACE. Members of parliament are elected by the people. The large parties form a monopoly with their money (power) and the small parties get stuck on the outside. Herd-mindedness in action. Gullibility in action. Short memory retention in action. Fool 'em again every single time, if an election manages to come around for the people to actually vote, before the House pushes the vote aside and takes matters into its own hands and does the old "No-confidence" trick and dissolves the very one whom they voted in. It's like a kid who wants a can of Coke and cries about getting it, and then throws it through the window when he can't get the tab to pop open. In closing, I think it would be more practical for the House of Representatives and the people who elect these representatives to simply save a lot of pain and regret to themselves and simply cancel all elections and make a motion to hold protests every four years and not elect anyone. The results would be the same, as nothing seems to get done, and I can't find anything on the Internet to show that any PM has done anything which they could conceivable take credit for... besides which anything they do do gets overturned when the next chap gets voted in. This is only my opinion, but my challenge is that nothing will change. No matter who gets in office, nothing will change. If one focuses on the behavior and tosses out the names and reasons, one will see that nothing changes. Lunacy.
diehard60 Posted November 29, 2013 Posted November 29, 2013 Poor old Mark, he just doesn't get it. Wasn't one of the first things PTP do when gaining office to cancel the free healthcare system to go back to the old failed Thaksin 30baht health care system? How many farmers, not middle men, not land owners, but subsistence farmers, have profited at all from the rice pledging scheme that has all but killed the Thai rice export business (and bankrupt the government banks)? What protection did PTP give you with regard to explosive rents up here in the Red heartland Pedr? Having said that, I think the Dems should be sitting back and watching rather than putting themselves in the way of a potential dissolution charge. Abhisit is bandwagon jumping - like Suthep (but at least he had the balls to go all in). I can't see any real upside for Abhisit in this regard - I doubt he is going to increase his vote numbers - at best he will have a much easier opposition next time around. YEP! They had the balls alright. When they killed 90 people before and closed the airports. Yep the had the balls then too.

You still fail to see what is going on in reality, despite the dozens of TVF posters who have went out of their way to inform you of reality. You are just wandering around in your own little world seeing what you want to see, reading what you want to read and thinking what your red Thai family have told you what to think. Why don't you allow your brain to have a little independence and freedom of thought. You really are brainwashed. So sad that unlike the vast democracies of this world the Thai's cannot wait until an election to cast their verdict on the incumbents.
peecee Posted November 29, 2013 Posted November 29, 2013 Looking at the history of the Prime Ministers elected by the House of Representatives, who were elected by the House majority, and comparing that to how their term ended, and the reasons therein, I literally see no change in things. The 1930's were a watershed for the kingdom; the King ended up moving to England and left the Siamese to their own devices; then look what happened to their new democracy , coupe after coupe & the disastrous joining of the Nazi/nippon axis of evil. Maybe some still look back to those halcyon days of autocratic absolute rule & maybe they have a point. Some people seem to like a regime which cannot be challenged!
