Now waiting for a speech from PM Yingluck stating the improved ranking was a result of all the hard work she and her government had put into corruption rolleyes.gif

May want to re-read the article...

Thailand fell 14 places... Meaning it is much more corrupt vs last year ...

The quote was meant to be sarcastic, you just missed the whole point.

No you missed the point. CWM was correct.

Did you Yellow supporters notice the big jump 2006-2008? When the Yellows were in power....there are no differences between these two mafia families. Equally corrupt.

You looking at the chart upside down ?? The story isn't about yellows it's about an all time high corruption at it's worst, Yinglucks government vowed to end it---Well??? same drugs-- wealth to the people--list too long to start again.

Uh- no- it's not about corruption- it is about the PERCEPTION of corruption- do people BELIEVE that corruption has gotten worse.

Now if you were to go to a Suthep rally and run the same survey- I can confidently say that the results will show that the perception of corruption is the absolute worst in the world.

If you go to a Yingluck stronghold- different story.

In rereading the thread, I see that this point has been made several times- and ignored- It suits our particular agendas to equate perception with reality- fine.

What this poll does show, unequivcially- that trust in the honesty of fellow Thais- perhaps the cops, perhaps the school head down ther road- the contracter bidding on building our house- and probably the government- is getting worse.

When the polls came out a few months ago- stating that an amazingly high percent of Thais are ok with corruption- then of COURSE the perception is going to be the corruption is getting worse.

IF you tell people that their neighbors quite like corruption- this might surprise them a bit- and so - in their perception- corruption is getting worse.

(not those neighbors blowing whistles to exorcise corruption from the national soul- in the form of the Demon Thaksin- no, those are the only people in Thailand who religiously file their taxes accurately, refuse to offer or accept a bribe, punish their children severely if caught cheating on tests... but the others- well they're ALL corrupt- And all because of that DEMON Thaksin who has entered their unsuspecting souls.

Are you after an Oscar ?? I look at this as is, they are there because it is fact---if dad smokes kids will----if family steals kids will--if parents fight and argue kids will, Therefore do you not agree if there is rampant government corruption population follows suit, they do not have anything to lose, they think it's normal so they do it.thumbsup.gif

You mean climbing from 88 to 102 is not an improvement blink.png

It is "falling" from 88 to 102 Singapour with number 5 is amongst the less corrupt smile.png

Looking at the graph, Thai score went up during Thaksin's term, stayed about the same for Surayud's and Abhisit's governments, then started going up again with the Thaksin clone 's government. Not a coincidence, since Thaksin is a poster boy for corruption. That's why a lot of people are on the streets in BKK.

The graph is horribly mis-titled. It is titled "Thailands Corruption Perceptions Index", but then doesn't actually graph the CPI, they only graph the relative ranking. It doesn't really matter that many countries improved their CPI to pass over Thailand. In the NBA for example, the Miami Heat have not become a worse team, their skill level remains the same, but other teams have increased their skill so Miami is no longer #1 (Currently #5). No one is suggesting that Miami has reduced skill from last year, just simply that the others have raised their skill.

So, if we look at the actual CPI from year to year for Thailand alone, you'll notice that Thailand enjoyed the best CPI during TRT and PTP administrations. One thing that I find most interesting is that the best CPI ever achieved was in 2005, the year of Thaksin's re-election and after one of the longest terms of uninterrupted democracy in Thai history (Leekpai 1997 to Thaksin 2005)...apparently the polls like it when a government runs year-in-year-out without coups!!

Didn't say it was a winning score, just the highest score Thailand ever reached. How does a building tech bubble reduce perceived corruption?!?

Thais and farang always find a way to justify corruption, police get paid too little, everyone does it, that's how business has always been done, if you not give a kickback you won't get the contract... Etc etc.... This mindset needs to change. The goal needs to be zero corruption, no excuses. It's like quitting smoking, the goal has to be 100% stop and that's what you have to shoot for. Thinking it is ok to smoke one and you are back to business as usual. Zero corruption is the goal !!!

Can Thai people stop ? Sure they can but they need first a leader who is not corrupt. They then need to forgive all past sins and start fresh. As of a start date anyone involved in correction goes to jail no matter who you are..... Government workers loose their jobs and benefits and go to jail. Businesses also have to follow the law or are shut down.

All 1st world countries have gone though the same problems with corruption and have it fairly under control now. If thailand is to move forward it needs to get serous and find the right leader. Zero corruption is the goal !

Sure am glad the USA has it under control now.

the amount of corruption in the US is a fraction compared to Thailand. Try offering a police man money to get out of a ticket and you will be put in jail just for that and if he takes he will loose his job and be put away also. There is corruption in every country but here it is on another level, out of control !

and yes, 28 years for corruption is good. It helps people take notice and understand what could happen.

So what are you trying to say ??

There is corruption in every country. America punishes those who get caught, Thailand does little or nothing. It is good to see people being held accountable for breaking the law. Thailand needs to do same America.

The Nation BANGKOK: -- Deputy police inspector-general Pol Maj-General Wichai Sangpraphai and two other senior officers have been indicted for convincing a suspect to pay a gambling debt worth Bt10 million in exchange for not handing him to Chiang Mai police for skipping a court hearing three years ago.

There is corruption in both countries. The rice thing may be close but nothing really compares to what the corrupt politicians did to Detroit. Thailand is a little country about the size of one American State. America is so big and the level of corruption so high that it has to be larger than Thailand. The last day in office the American President pardons felons for money. Look it up.

When comparing Thailand to countries that aren't corrupt pick another country besides the USA.

I am an American and lived there most of my life . I have never met a corrupt American policeman or government employee. I have lived in Thailand for 18 years and have never met a non-corrupt Thai Policeman or government employee. Get the picture ! I am talking percent of dishonest people not about a few isolated high profile cases. My last answer to you.... Not worth my time as you are part of the problem I think.

Have you seen the monk in Bangkok who is 8 feet tall. I have. That you have never seen the 8 foot tall monk in Bangkok does not mean he is not there or I am lying only that you have not seen him.

Actually only 71/2 feet for the pedants.

I have lived in Chicago, Detroit, New York and New Orleans. If you had lived in Chicago, Detroit, New York or New Orleans and said you had never met a crooked cop we would all die laughing.

I completely agree. My neighbour who runs a materials extraction company bemoans the massive increase in corruption by officials, for site inspections, certificates etc.. Yet one of his competitors just runs his operation without a license ..he wants to do the right thing. Costs are passed on, employees reduced. He just wants to run a business ethically..

I think people ( old farangs) live in bubbles in their moo baans, rely on the Thai wife..and just don't scratch below the surface..Thailand is a 3rd worked country with 3rd world institutions and education..there are consequences to this..it has it's pluses, but it's just a very ordinary country like most others..but it has many faults..I don't get these Thai apologists at all..and yes he is very much part of the problem.

I dispair that a country I have lived in for so long would have changed for the better for my daughter..but it hasn't.
