Why Thailand's New Elections Will Make a Coup More Likely
By Bruce Einhorn

Bloomberg Businessweek

BANGKOK: -- In Thailand, where protesters in the capital are demanding the ouster of the kingdom’s elected leaders, people today took the day off to celebrate, of all things, Constitution Day.

How much longer Thailand’s constitution lasts is anyone’s guess. On Monday, Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra dissolved the parliament and called new elections. Since the opposition hasn’t won an election in decades, the latest move isn’t likely to satisfy Yingluck’s critics, who see her as a proxy for her exiled brother, former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

“They no longer have any hope or faith in the electoral system,” Thitinan Pongsudhirak, Chulalongkorn University director, told Bloomberg Television on Tuesday. “They keep losing and they think the electoral system only produces corrupt politicians based on money politics under Thaksin’s influence, led by Yingluck, so they are rejecting that system.”

For now, Yingluck’s move is likely to embolden the opposition Democrat Party and its supporters, who think Thai democracy is rigged in favor of her populist brother and the poor rural voters who support him. “The Democrats clearly smell blood,” [read more...]

If you were responding to me its great that in a single post i have managed to vindicate the entire movement, someone needs to give me an award.

As i said the conflict and the problems are separate, but its something the most reds always try and conflute.

A typical example is Binjalin, with his 'the amart they bad' mantra that he will never tire of repeating no matter the aspect of the discussion.

Once the conflict subsides then progress is possible though unlikely, while the conflict remains progress is not possible and things are getting worse, if Suthep's PDRC is beginning to sound like a good idea to a sizable chunk of the electorate, then its a bad sign.

Many are tired of the massive corruption and lies by politicians

.

Thats been going on for decades, what the difference now?

The amnesty was the catalyst, the Shinawatras need to get out of politics now, the conflict (Thailand's deeper problems are separate) centres around them, without Thaksin's machinations none of this would have happened.

True to a certain point. Thai people have been sick of the increasing corruption for a long time. It does center on the Shin clan, but they are not the only family who are trying to rule all. They have been very successful, though.

K'Thitinan is very knowledgeable and respected. He should be listened to.

I find him to have a good analysis of the situation. I briefly met him last year. He works with Chris Baker sometimes. Another man who knows what is going on.

It is my sincerest hope that there will be no coup. It would be disastrous for the country. It would be like throwing away 7 years.

We are reaching a peak, then comes the coup because nobody, no politician or anybody else can agree to agree as to what's wrong.

We know what's wrong.

Everybody knows what's wrong.

Its just going to take time, for the processes to eventually get more transparent.

Time and some more coups. Probably.

This is what Thailand needs, "A spectacular debut by a new Indian party"

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-india-25296412

The current situation is too polarised between the two parties. The majority (all) of the current crop of politicians have entered the game for their own gains not in the interest of the Thai people as a whole. They need a third party who's main thrust is a genuine desire to rid Thai politics of corruption. They may not be able to unseat the two powerful parties who dominate at present, but they could force those two parties to move closer to centre and act as a control against the extreme elements in these parties. Sadly there is absolutely no sign of this at present. The only other hope is that the Democrats can totally re-invent themselves and therefore attract some of PTPs support. Unfortunately the Dems have little or no drive and imagination and they always in the end resort to the lazy/easy solution, to get them back in power, yet another coup.

^^^ Its a complex landscape. Ironically the two aspects of the political system that broadly speaking the grass roots reds and yellows focus on, respect for electoral results and respect of the law are actually completely complementary and are both essential to any stable democracy.

The fact that the 2 sides are at loggerheads demonstrates the manipulated and artificial nature of the conflict.

If both sides came together then the politicians would be in trouble rather than the country.

I will risk totally disagreeing. The Army have shown more time than one they can step in, restore order, because they have the discipline and the fire power to do so, and then step out. Unelected Peoples Councils? This was a brain snap by its author. Hair brained at that.

What happens the moment they make an unpopular decision, that has nothing to do with a constitution that does not even recognise it. At least the Army are trying to uphold the constitution, when the politicians cannot.

That is why there are so many coups here. Too many greedy, short sighted politicians fighting over the trough and their patches, which have nothing to do with the will or benefit of the people.

At its heart, the LOS, is a tough town.

But you can't make a tasty cake without breaking open some eggs at first.

And I have a feeling a lot of eggs are going to be broken open soon.

My old math teacher told the class, "If you have a monkey typing radomly on a typewriter for infinity, he will type all the world's great novels, perfectly, eventually. ." We just have to wait a while longer for the perfect constitution. I think it needs to be VERY LARGE with lots of contingency clauses, definitions, checks and balances, and defined principles. If you apply the mathematical principle of "limits", you can clearly see it won't take longer than infinitly long.

Democracy is rooted in socialism, which is rooted in communism. Funny you neglected to mention republic. It is more of a democracy than you think.

You describe "no red no yellow" but then you decry the red and avoid decrying the yellow. It demonstrates your lean towards what? The yellow. Your post is wasted and has no credibility.

It's not about politics with your demographic. It's about freebies and wasting most of those freebies and cannibalizing the opportunities and leaving waste and destruction behind you.

Look around you and tell me that you aren't aware of the extreme social problems which exist right on your doorstep: the feral children, the rampant crime committed by your fellows, the numerous books that lie around with dust collecting on them, the shirking of responsibilities and accountability towards your lunatic behaviors, the rampant alcoholism, gambling, swindling, cheating, lying, killing, youth gangs, youth pregnancies, cheating on tests, scoffing the very laws which might provide security and safety around your neighborhoods and on the roads which you travel; ...not to mention the manner in which you enforce racist and discriminatory policies, behaviors, laws, towards your foreign brothers and sisters from Laos, Burma, Cambodia, and the entire world.

Your demographic intentionally endeavors and strives wholeheartedly to cover up your own inability to build, create, manufacture, construct any dreams, hopes or possibilities of dreams and hopes.

Your demographic allows jealousy and greed to shackle the ankles of those who are capable of helping; moreover your culture breeds laziness, apathy, procrastination (There's no emergency and crisis in Thailand until it happens) and a sense of belief that other people have the responsibility and duty to pull you out of the very problems you create for yourselves.

At almost every step which opportunity provides for you, your demographic, and all the other demographics in your country, I read, witness or hear about that opportunity wasted for the reasons listed above, and then some.

You seem to think that the fruit tree grows from the top down. It does not. It first plants it roots in good soil and then grows the stalk which becomes the trunk and the branches and leaves and finally the fruit. The entire basis of your culture, your FACE and the many sordid behaviors (when no one is looking) is the fallow soil that all of this is lunacy is founded in.

So, please dispense with your narrow-minded views about politics and that somehow a bunch of scofflaws, cheaters, liars, racists and cowards are going to make their lives better if they have a clean slate and get to vote from within their rank and file. You see, it is the little things that pull you down. Those little things are the elements which you are capable of changing. You have that empowerment; ...but what do you do with it? You waste it at every step.

Your demographic is the problem because you refuse to be the answer. Again: look around you. Read the local paper. Do these things and then tell me whose responsibility it is. Parliament? Yeah. I thought so.

...and doing it the way you mentioned is going to magically transform Thailand into the HUB of all good things in the universe.

I regret to have to tell your demographic something that you should already be aware of: change begins with you all, but being (more than likely) uneducated and biased into the belief that you have reached your full potential as a human being makes it impossible for you to understand that change begins with you, and not with anyone else.

Having coups is not the answer - Teaching yourselves to be responsible and accountable on a personal level is.

Continually scoffing your own laws and attacking the very leaders who are elected, immediately after the get elected is not the answer - Putting your own house in order, and then cleaning up your neighborhoods and treated your fellow Thais (and those who visit your country) with dignity, fairness, honesty and respect is.

Blaming everyone else is not the answer - knowing where your children are, and making them learn and grow up to be good citizens and to have decent social skills and behaviors, and being a good example to them is.

The dirty laundry list is too long, and the politicians are just the dirty underwear on the top of the stinking pile.

Of course... all of this is merely my own, stupid "Farang" opinion, and I apologize if you are not Thai, but this nevertheless applies to that demographic.

Very well said...and to be completely ignored, unfortunately!

Not all protesters are Democrats. Many are tired of the massive corruption and lies by politicians. Especially the current ones. And especially the PM. They want a change, but aren't necessarily fond of Suthep.

Yeah, I'll go with that.

Suthep has played his hand quite well I think, even if I don't agree with him and much of what he has to say... he has awakened Thailand's largest voting block, the politically apathetic. I mean, most pro-PTP types like to say the entire of Isaan and Pak Neua all vote for Thaksin, but a few chats in the provinces will reveal that the public generally don't trust any politicians - even if they acknowledge they're basically celebrities and therefore deserve a few cheers.

Unfortunately, it will not be "Somchai" the tuk-tuk driver who is willing to "go all the way", but rather, the mercedes-driving K. Sobahn who wants to keep the current situation.
