Six million, REALLY? That would make it the one of the biggest gatherings of humanity in the history of the planet. A quick scout around the interweb brings up a visit by Pope John somebody or other with a crowd of 7,000,000 as the largest gathering ever recorded. Think this demo was in that league? maybe suthep is that "god" that the pope is always jibbering on about...

Albeit many, many millions less than those who voted for either of the two main political parties

if he had the support of the public at large he could take power democratically without causing chaos and bloodshed

his "movement" does not care what the public want - the public are just an obstacle to cross on the path to power

If he really had a strong following would not he want elections?

no no no... that would be too risky... much better to take power by force, let the supporters of the government (i.e. the "public at large") unleash mayhem on bangkok, then once enough damage has been done to the country and the economy, and enough people injured and killed, suthep can enact marshal law to protect thailand from the "terrorists" and "reform" the constitution to protect thailand from the evils of democracy and ensure the utopian state of suthep can flourish into eternity

'6 Millions' Attended Anti-Govt Rally, Spokesman Insists
By Khaosod Online

Bangkok: -- Spokesman of the anti-government protests has insisted that at least six million demonstrators were present at the rally in Bangkok on 22 December.

Mr. Ekkanat Prompan, spokesman of the People′s Committee for Absolute Democracy With the King As Head of State (PCAD), said in a press conference yesterday that the state authorities such as the Royal Thai Police and the National Security Council continued to "distort" the number of "the Great Mass of the People".

According to the police, a total of approximately 120,000 people were at the rallies, which took place at many key districts of Bangkok such as Victory Monument, Siam, Asoke Intersection, and Ratchadamnoen Avenue.

The protesters were demanding the formation of an unelected ′People′s Assembly′ to rule the country and bring out their desired "reforms".

Many foreign media agencies also place the number of 22 December demonstrators as "tens of thousands".

But Mr. Ekkanat told reporters that the PCAD has consulted Mr. Kwansuang Atibhodi, an expert in city planning and brother of a prominent anti-government critic, and reached the conclusion that 4.8 million people were present at the main stage on Ratchadamnoen Avenue, while another 1.2 million people were scattered throughout other rallies in Bangkok.

PCAD has previously claimed that millions of people attended their rallies in the past, and its supporters have criticised or even physically assaulted reporters who placed the number less than their projection.

According to official statistics, the total registered population of Bangkok stands at 6-8 million people.

If Suthep and his crony's fielded (6) million people a his demonstration and stated every one in the province's supported them, Hey contest the election you have it won!

That is barely a little lower then the Total votes you guys received from those who supported you in the Last Election you lost, the figure I heard was 300,000, And two female reporters were assaulted because the PDRC say they stated lower turnout numbers.

It was definitely over a million this time. Possibly 2 million.

Not sure about 4.8 million.

Jonathan Head (BBC) has been taking a lot of flak from the protesters (unwarranted in my view). He has raised an excellent point. What does it matter how many people show up? Either they get what they want or they don't and playing this numbers game has no bearing on the outcome.

My view is that either there is a coup with (a) election reform and then an election, (B) a coup with a benevolent dictator, or © no coup and nothing changes. Trying to figure how many people show up has no bearing on any of these choices.

If a lot of people showed up they could have an election and win if in reality few show up, they have to obstruct an election.

Before the protests, the amount of people showing up seemed to be very important. I didn't think ahead about the numbers then, but as this has carried forward, Jonathan Head's comments have made sense to me. At this point, I have been wondering <deleted> does this have to do with numbers? Either it plays out or it doesn't.

Maybe it is as you say as to strategy going forward.

One thing for sure, perhaps due to the numbers, the Shinawatra's are worried.

In the late 1970s and early 1980s I flew a Piper Chieftain with photo gear over Mecca to record the Hadjj scene for analysis. The Saudi government spent a lot of time and money to derive an accurate method of counting people using our pictures. The method developed became quit accurate, so it has been proven that photo imagery can be used to count people with a certain degree of accuracy. However, from observing the 1 to 2 million Hadjjis from the air as well as looking at the photos publicly available, I find 6 million to a little high.

Do you have to be a practising Muslim to fly over Mecca and photograph it?

Contrary to popular belief, no. The professor/specialist that operated the cameras and equipment was a Muslim (from USA) however.

Just rebooked my hotel from 1st to 6th - cancelled first booking made a month ago (can do 100% fee free up till 24 hours before) and just got our favourite hotel Prom Rachada at half the price which was booked solid when I initially tried to book. So thanks Khun Suthep from us for the extra baht we'll have thanks to your undemocratic ways. The fair weather friends will stay away whilst you whistle and cajole away.

Quite the numbers shepherd there or maybe weathervane is more appropriate. All done apparently from a desktop located somewhere....to support the megalomaniac Suthep et al. You know, lying to support a liar and criminal.

I think it's called 'in over your skiis' there Nibbles48, way over...

But I've got a bridge in Brooklyn and can get you a great deal on it...possibly 2 million but not over 4.8 million.
