NBTC begins auctions of digital TV licenses today

BANGKOK: -- The National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) today began to open the two-day auction of 24 digital TV channels today at CAT Tower in Bang Rak area. The first day will be for 14 digital TV licenses.

The morning auction today will be for seven HD variety channel licenses while the rest seven SD channels in the afternoon.

The starting price of the HD variety channel license is set at 1,510 million baht per license, while the SD variety channel license at 380 million baht.

The auction is televised live on TPBS Channel.

The registration process started 9.30 a.m.

A total of nine bidders entered auctions for seven HD variety channel licenses.

They are Bangkok Broadcasting and Television, PM Group, Amarin Television, MCOT, GMM HD Digital TV, BEC-Multimedia, Thai Broadcasting, Bangkok Media and Broadcasting, and Triple V Broadcast.

Qualified bidders entered the auction rooms are not allowed to bring in their electronic devices such as mobile phones. They will be allowed only to carry with them identification cards, A 4 blank papers, and personal medicines.

All nine bidders will be first given user name passwords and business passwords by lot-drawing and let into each auction room by guards. Each auction room will be equipped with a computer notebook and two printers.

The auction will start at 11.00 a.m. It will last in one hour.

Each bidder must offer price within the first five minutes. Failing to offer the price will be disqualified for auction.

The afternoon auction will be for seven SD variety channel licenses with a total of 16 companies contesting.

They are Bangkok Business Broadcasting, BBTV Satelvision, GMM SD Digital TV, BEC-Multimedia, Voice TV, Thai Broadcasting, Thai TV, MCOT, RS Television, Amarin Television, Triple V Broadcast, 411 Entertainment, Touch TV, Bangkok Media and Broadcasting, Mono Broadcast and True DTT.
