Police vow to return peace after clashes this morning

BANGKOK, Dec 26 – The Centre for Administration of Peace and Order (CAPO) today promised to return the situation to normal as soon as possible after clashes this morning between police and anti-government protesters.

CAPO spokesman Piya Utayo said the registration of party-list candidates in the February 2 general election was carried out at the Thai-Japanese stadium in Din Daeng despite protesters’ attempts to obstruct it.

Gymnasium 2 in the stadium was arranged as venue for the registration, scheduled to end tomorrow.

Pol Maj Gen Piya said protesters tried to intrude into the stadium and hurled home-made bombs into the compound, compelling police to fire tear gas and rubber bullets at them to control the situation.

He said three policemen were injured in the clashes.

A preliminary investigation found that gunshots were fired from a building near the Thai-Japanese stadium into the protest site, he said, adding that a senior police officer, Pol Gen Charamporn Suramanee, was assigned to conduct first-hand investigation.

The CAPO spokesman asked protesters to stop violent activities and damaging government property now that the election registration was carried out.

Police and military will do their best to return the situation to normal as soon as possible, he said.

Schools near the stadium closed immediately this morning and parents were told to promptly pick up their children.

There was no report of injuries among students. (MCOT online news)

Again the Caretaker Prime Minister is nowhere in sight. So much for the 'Captain' of the ship manning the bridge and directing personal to duties, etc. Seems she commandered her own private life boat and has fled the scene again.

If nothing else the protests have bought out a side of the present political group not addressed before. "Their internal fortitude", The country is in the middle of a crises and they have scattered like rats. This part is laughable when you consider the man who isone of the self proclaimed protest leaders has been dismissed, kind of like a old tom cat, way past his prime.

Someone needs to step up and put this organization of, incompentent, corrupt, misfits out of their misery and do the country and its residents a real "Happy New Year".

Capo needs to reflect more on today's events than to promise a more peacful outcome. They need to

account for the use of rubber bullets.

These guys are good at arresting mushroom pickers ... they are way out of their league with the current protests.

Cutting padlocks on the gate of the stadium in order to invade its grounds and interfere with the democratic process of registration is hardly civil protest.

Hurling home-made bombs at police is not a peaceful civil disobedience.

To break into government buildings, to taunt police, to threaten the PM and her family with dire consequences as Suthep has repeated numerous times does not amount to peaceful, civil disobedience.

The uber-blind-anti-Thaksinistas would see nothing wrong with any of this because they are fanatical about their support.

What could prompt such rage and anger? Have any of the anti-Thaksinistas here lost any money or property due to Thaksin's policies or schemes?

I am no fan of Mr. T and certainly not a fan of Suthep or Abhisit. They are representative of the same hierarchy, feudal and corrupt system of governance that has existed since 1932. Furthermore, Suthep is adept to one of the major tenets of the 12 Mandates of 1938: "Do not trust foreigners." Read about it (preferably in Thai) be informed and then you will see your folly.

These yellow shirts are playing dirty, real dirty. They are desparate for any thing that vaugly resembles an upper hand in their "holy quest" to get rid of Thaksin, and if there is nothing, im willing to bet they will try and make it up.

Where were these gung-ho cops in 2010 when Bangkok was held hostage for 2 months? As I recall it took the military to dislodge them, and that wasn't pretty.

Absolutely! Direct frontal assaults went out of style a long time ago. Training for sure. But still, looks cool. The question would be, "Which side is in the 'right'?" The answer would be, probably, neither side! But the winner gets to rewrite history and proclaim themselves "right"! Human beings will be human beings. Too bad for the planet.
