I just flew back into Thailand Nov.28th on a 30-day entry valid until Friday Dec 27th. I was traveling and figured I'd go in on Monday and pay the fine when I went into Bangkok Immigration to get a 60-day extension based on marriage. Now I just called to verify the main office was back in service and am told they are but will not be open until Jan. 2nd.

Couple Questions ...

Am I going to have to pay a fine for each day they have not been opened from the 27th? Also, can anybody tell me if I can get this extension at any of the other offices they now mention do certain kinds of extensions in Bangkok?

I would have asked this when I called this morning but the person who answered the phone on their 1111 phone line didn't speak any English and sounded like security.

Thanks for your help.

Since you could of done it on the 27th you will more than likely have to pay an overstay a fine of 500 baht per day.

CW has been open since the 16th. The other offices are only for doing 90 day reports.

Thanks for the quick reply ... to word the original question differently and to confirm ... Is it normal they count extended holidays as overstay days in a situation like this where I did have the ability to go in before? I don't really expect logic to come into play but just wanting to see if they ignore the fact it would be impossible for me to go in when they are not open.

You will have to pay the fine of 500 baht/day for each day, whether they have been opened or not, since you didn't report on the 27th, when they were open. The 60 day extension will start on the 27th, not the day that you go to immigration. So if you go on the 2nd you will have to pay 6 days overstay, 3000 baht, and 1900 baht to extend your permission to stay..

Go early, they will be mobbed after having been closed for 5 days! And there's no telling what Suthep has in mind to start the new year!

Thanks for reminding me and adding to my woes as I listen to my wife ask me, "Why man like to spend money stupidly? Buy drink for girls and give government ... better buy me new purse"

It might be less costly to do border run tomorrow and get a new entry. Then do the extension. If you are from one of the G7 countries you would get 30 days instead of 15 at the border.

I guess that I would have to weigh the small cost differential against getting in a van and doing a border run in the madness of the holiday traffic and the carnage on the highways this time of the year. I'd stay home, go early on the 2nd, pay the fine and kick myself for letting happen!

Although I am so happy to be back home after a couple weeks of traveling and being in/on cars, motorbikes and planes, I was considering the border run since I may be leaving the country again within 30-days but your reminder of the holiday road conditions (extra drunks on the road) has made me accept I will be at immigration on the 2nd and lesson my chance of becoming a statistic. Nobody likes throwing money away, regardless of amount, I just don't like being in the country illegally. I have never been asked for my passport but have been questioned/stopped by police a few times over the years. Not that I go out and party too often, for sure I won't be this New Year because most all police interaction were coming from night spots late at night.

" I don't really expect logic"

On whose part? Since Immigrations was open when you should have/ could have gone in, their subsequent closure doesn't shift the cause of the late report onto them.

As I stated earlier, I don't expect logic but reading numerous posts for years on this board from people asking questions, I do expect nitpicking grumpy and silly replies from many trying to show superiority over people who pose simple questions about visa/immigration related issues.. Thanks for reminding me why I chose not to register before but if I was able to make your life a little better by giving you an opportunity to nitpick and condemn then I am glad I was able to boost your self-esteem. To those who answered my question, I appreciate the help and suspect you don't need to troll threads to find and point out fault in others to raise your self-esteem.

So, I went down and it appears extensions, at least based on marriage, starts on the day you apply / go down and pay the overstay and not from the original date it would have started if going down on time or early. I went back and looked at an older past port where I had some overstays and they all started on the day I applied for the extension and not when I should have. Extension on a Tourist Visa or other Visa may be different as they have time limits & time lines.

What was cool is they originally gave me until March 3rd but then ended up giving me an extra week (March 11th) after as I pointed out that Monday was not an official holiday but they chose to take it off despite their website saying they are closed only on "official holidays". Although they didn't appear to be able to adjus the fine, really did think it was very nice of them to give me the extra week even though it really doesn't do anything for me.

Thanks again for your reply but just thought I would clear up the part about when this type of extension kicks in.
