Thailand Bids To Join Un Rights Body

Thailand's bid to join UN rights body

BANGKOK: The decision by the Foreign Ministry to put Thailand up for membership on the "new" United Nations Human Rights Council was ill-considered. But the result was worse. For the second time in three years, Thailand was humiliated by a defeat at the hands of governments that are clear human rights abusers. It also reveals that the UN's ethical problems remain deeply embedded. The world body has now twice judged that nations such as Saudi Arabia and China are not Thailand's equal in consideration of human rights, but are superior. The former UN human rights commission was dominated by some of the world's most brutish nations, all determined that the UN never be allowed to take any action which might expose their excesses. But the new human rights council has maintained all the protections for nasty governments of the old commission. (Bangkok Post)

Never mind! I'm sure Russia, China & Cuba will tell Thailand which road to take to improve Human Rights. :o

Cuba might help with universal healthcare, China with dealing with corruption, Russia might have something else to offer, too.

I hope you are not being serious. :o

However having lived in Cuba, and visited run down hospitals and "mental institutions", where prostitutes are rehabilitated. Free health care (paid for by a 12% Income Tax) is not what it's cracked up to be! Also "Human Rights" where people are jailed for keeping animals for personal consumption will go down well in Thailand :D

China deals with corruption in order to present a free line of investment for foreign businesses, but there are 1000's of political prisoners, and gay conferences regarding Hiv, etc. are closed down by police.

Russia could always advise Thailand on the Chechnyan model for control of militants!

As F**ked up as the UN is today, i think they should include Myanmar to the HR council. :o
