'Gambler' Found Dead Near Thai-Cambodia Border

BANGKOK: -- The body of a suspected Thai gambler has been found in a creek near Thai-Cambodia border in Sa Kaeo province.

The body was later identified as Mr. Sitthichai Lueangchoo-kiat, a 67-year-old resident of Phra Khanong District, Bangkok.

Post mortem investigation revealed that Mr. Sitthichai had been brutally beaten before his death, police said. Immigration Police in the province said there is no record that Mr. Sitthichai has crossed into Cambodia.

Pol.Lt.Col. Gosala Ngamphong said Mr. Sitthichai might have illegally entered Cambodia to gamble, as the area is known to be a secret passageway for Thai gamblers headed for Cambodian gambling den.

The officer suspected that he was later assaulted and killed by individuals at the casino, who later dumped the body into the creek.

The investigation is ongoing.

Carrying his winnings or fleeing his losses, I wonder.

Either way, it's a fool's game with some dangerous players (and not only at the table).

RIP and commiserations to his loved ones.

RIP. My prayers with his wife, children and grandchildren at this very difficult time.

He must have won ! that is a big mistake and no doubt the catalyst for his demise.

Thais don't need to travel to Cambodia to visit gambling dens.

Somebody didn't know when to hold 'em, when to fold 'em, when to walk away, and certainly didn't know when to run. RIP unlucky gambler.

When I saw the headline I thought it was referring to Kenny Rogers.

I thought gambling was illegal?? Yep one big or lost big, poor chap and family have lost a loved one...

MAfia lending money don't take it, it costs life .

Gambling in Cambodia is legal. The casino "resorts" are busy almost every night with coachloads of Japanese/Korean/Chinese, and Thai players (some real "high rollers") nightly, rolling in from Siem Riep (and elsewhere). But there are plenty of places not aimed at the high roller, where only a brave man would set foot, let alone leave having had successful night.

I feel for the poor man!! One suspects he was either relieved of any winnings or was maybe in over his head.

This really doesn't surprise me at all as Poipet really is the utter Ars*h*le of South East Asia. Possibly the vilest place on Earth...It is possibly the only place I've ever been to where the word "Lawless" truly fits.

Just how the Cambodian authorities continue to let this cesspit be the first experience many tourists have of their otherwise lovely country is beyond me and it's been that way since the land border universally opened in the late 1990s.

Last year the wife and I arrived back late in Poipet one night thanks to the soap dish which passed for a boat from Siem Reap to Battambang breaking down about 9 times, while en route back to Thailand. We arrived too late so had to stay in Poipet overnight. It wasn't an experience I'd like to repeat, ever. We couldn't stay at any of the resorts as we weren't gambling, or planning to, so were stuck with a cruddy Guest House. I had to go out for some supplies and the streets there were full of all kind of rogue and villain. Thankfully many of the hotels employ private security who thought nothing to aggressively confronting any iffy characters in the area yet when we talked about it with our Guest House manager told us in used tones (with genuine fear in his eyes how the dens were run by Khmer Rouge and Thai Mafia) and that the scum come to Poipet for a reason and are willing to run the gauntlet of the local coppers (who I gathered are as effective as their Thai counterparts and will turn a blind eye to anything for a few dollars) and the more security concious security guards (though their mandate is protecting their hotels and their well-heeled customers who bring big money to the town daily) as there can sometimes be good rewards to reap.

...known passageway....that is left as is.....

...even after a murder.....???

That’s what gambling is all about taking on the risk sometimes the odds are in favour of you and the next time not RIP gambler.
