Bangkok governor's home bombed

BANGKOK: -- Suan Pakkad Palace Museum, one of Bangkok’s historical place and home of Bangkok Governor M.L. Sukhumbhand Paribatra, was attacked by hand grenade last night. There was no injury but a car parked inside his home was damaged.

Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) and Phayathai police rushed to scene shortly after being alerted.

A pin of the M 26 grenade was found near the scene. It was the same pin of the grenade used in the attack of opposition Democrat party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva’s home this week.

The latest attack on the governor’s home happened at 9.45 p.m. on Sri Ayutthaya road in Rajathevi area. The governor was not at home but was alerted shortly afterwards. He rushed back to his home last night.

He explored sadness over the attack, saying he never took side and served all sides no matter what colors the protesters are.

He condemned the attack, saying the bomb attack was tantamount to attack the prehistoric place. He strongly believed the bombing was the work of the same group of ill-intentioned people who attacked Abhisit’s house.

The governor said that the attacker might think he was at the home and therefore prompted attack.

National Police Office deputy commissioner Pol Gen Ake Angsananond inspected the scene last night. He said the grenade used in the attack was a M 26 hand grenade, same type as the grenade used in the attack of the former prime minister’s house on Soi Sukhumvit 31 late Tuesday night.

He said that the attack was well planned and was carried out by the same group of attackers.

He added that the police will step up security check and set up more checkpoints in the area.

According to the EOD police, the hand grenade was hurled from outside the road and fell at the car park, causing a 10-centimeter hole on the concrete ground.

Suan Pakkad Palace Museum is one of Bangkok’s historical places. It consists of four traditional Thai houses and houses a display of historical antiques dating from prehistoric times to the Rattanakosin period.

Three hours earlier, protest leader Suthep Thaugsuban told several thousands of supporters that there was attempt by red-shirt leader Natawut Saikua, now deputy commerce minister, to unseat the Bangkok governor reasoning that the governor provided facilities at the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BNA) office for the protest leaders to hold secret meetings.

Suthep said such accusation was groundless, adding that if the governor is really unseated by his allegation or attempt, millions of Bangkok people will come out as he was elected by two million Bangkok people.

He thanked the red-shirt leader if his attempt was achieved as his protest will add two more million people to join the mass protest.

Saying first of all that any vile attack like this is to be condemned and perpetrators jailed, I wonder how in the news things change (or are manipulated) depending on the source.

The Nation and the Bangkok Post: hand grenade.

Other 2 sources: ping pong bomb - IED

Where's the truth?

Edit: Source cited wrong

Update: Many sources now are converging on the hand grenade, so I guess that is the device used... Quite worrying.

The truth is certainly not in your post. The first 4 words of the BP article is "An M26 hand grenade".

First of all, it would be very inconsistent with the policy of non-engagement by the caretaker government. An act of violence against the Democrat party leader like Mr. Abhisit or the Bkk Governor would immediately be blamed on the caretaker government - Right?

So if you were a thinking man - wouldn't you agree?

First the Democratic Party headquarters area is sprayed with gunfire. Then a hand grenade thrown at Abhisit's house. Now the same thing at the area where the BKK governor (a Democrat) lives.

Are we beginning to sense a pattern here???

And yet no one seems to be throwing explosives at YL or her minion's homes. Wonder why?

UPDATE:
Motorcycle attacker hurls hand grenade at governor’s home

BANGKOK: -- The police are now hunting for two motorcyclists who were seen in a video footage hurling a hand grenade into Suan Pakkad Palace, home of the Bangkok governor M.L. Sukhumbhand Paribatra last night.

The video footage showed the pillion rider in a jacket dismounting from the motorcycle and then hurled the grenade from outside sidewalk to the home. He then jumped on to a waiting motorcycle and escaped towards Phayathai intersection.

The bomb attack happened at about 10.20 p.m. last night.

National Police Office deputy commissioner Pol Gen Ake Angsananond said the grenade was the same type which was used to attack Democrat party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva on Soi Sukhumvit 31 on Tuesday night.

The advisory team of the Bangkok governor said that the video footage will be released to the media and shown on the public today.

Bomb attack at Suan Pakkad Palace, damaging car; no injuries
By Digital Content

BANGKOK, Jan 17 -- Suan Pakkad Palace, a museum located in Sri Ayutthaya Road, was hit by bomb attack that damaged a car in the premise without no report of injuries.

Police said the attack occurred at around 10pm when an unidentified person hurled a bomb into the palace. The explosion damaged a car but no one was injured.

Bangkok Governor Sukhumbhand Paripatra inspected the scene and said that the assailants may have thought he was living in the compound so they have targeted the palace.

Mr Sukhumbhand is chairman of the Chumbhot-Pantip Foundation which owns and manages Suan Pakkad Palace and Museum.

He said there was nobody living there. However, one security guard stayed there to provide security for the museum.

The Bangkok governor said that it was sad that police could not protect the people's property particularly referring to bomb attacks at the homes of Democrat Party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva and former Democrat MP Issara Somchai.

National Police Deputy commissioner Pol Gen Ake Angsananond said that, according to the initial investigation, the bomb was an M26 hand grenade, similar to that used in the attack on Mr Abhisit's Sukhumvit home on Tuesday.

It was believed that the attackers may be the same group, he said.

After inspecting the CCTV camera at the palace, the footage showed a black clad attacker, wearing a helmet, got off a motorcycle and threw an object over the wall into the compound before leaving the scene.

Earlier in the day, a small explosive was hurled into the protest site of the People's Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC) in front of Lumpini Park.

A PDRC volunteer security guard told police that he was working with other three guards at the intersection under the Thai Belgium bridge to provide security at about 8pm.

Two men on a motorcycle, wearing protective vests and helmets, rode from Sathorn Road and threwa small explosive device before leaving the scene. No one injured in the incident.

In another incident, a small explosion and gunshots toward the rally site at five way intersection at Lat Phrao occurred at around 2am. Two security guards were wounded in the attacks. (MCOT online news)

The first news report in this forum stated that the Abhisit bomb was a "ping pong" bomb. Now they are saying it was the same pin as the hand grenade in the Abhisit bomb. What gives with the press? The Thai press seems totally inept at getting the facts and telling the truth.

well, whoever is doing this, we can be grateful that they are totally inept, having failed 100% if the aim was to hurt someone of status. Sadly, many innocent "small people" haven't had the same good fortune over the past few years

Now I know what that sound was!!! Real loud last night. I can't see around that corner bc buildings are blocking the view. I was looking through my binoculars at Victory Monument, but of course didn't see any smoke or commotion, so figured I was just being paranoid (there have been fireworks going off since before New Year's and even a display nearby this week). I thought maybe it was a truck or something falling at a construction site. It didn't sound like an explosion but more like something really heavy dropping from a height.

edit: actually, if I look to the right, I can probably see the Pakkard museum. I didn't notice any smoke or anything last night. But could have just missed it because I was concentrating on other places.
