Thailand GPS Turn by Turn Apps for Android

Featured Replies

gosompoi, I am looking at this in Switzerland in Preview mode, ie without actually driving the route, but it looks to me like it is now possible to drive, for example, all the way from Bangkok to Chiang Mai without Internet connection and see your route and your position on the route displayed on Google Maps all the time. You start with loading the route in Google Maps when you have an Internet connection, eg at home, and as long as you don’t exit Maps or backspace out of your selected route this will work even when you are offline, and you can switch to other apps, ie away from the Maps display, and return to it again at any time and it will continue to show your route and your position on it. I believe, though, that outside of a limited radius from your departure point the map display will be of a lower resolution, ie a little blurred, but still sufficiently clear to be of practical use. Of course, you don’t get voice instructions nor other bells and whistles available in a full navigation application.

If you have a chance, please try it out and then let us know how it went.

I'm using Oruxmaps for Android, you can create your own offline maps based on several providers like google maps or open street map.

The only disadvantage is that you are limited to 500MB of download, but you can create several maps next to each other and save them to your sd card.

I use navigator on the note 2 samsung

Perfect offline turn by turn

Whilst Oruxmaps is excellent, it does not offer turn by turn navigation (thread topic) as far as I know?

Google maps is not an offline mapping product and offline maps by google are not supported/allowed yet in Thailand.

Which navigator is it that you use?

It called Navigator by mapfactor

can download it from the playstore

Thank you for this clarification, which has helped me find the app in question, MapFactor: GPS Navigation.

I see they have two versions, one based on OpenStreetMap, the other based on Tom Tom. I'll be interested to hear from members about their experience with either version.

The app looks promising, seeing that it got a rating of 4.4 out of a maximum of 5 stars. I will use the OpenStreetMap version next week, driving from my place to Milan Malpensa airport. Won't have a chance to use it in Thailand until January next year.

Depends on the app... guess the following is supposed to be non-existing ;-)

I've tried the free one also and find it doesn't hold a candle to likes of Sygic in terms of map quality or safety of use. A usefull alternative however if need arises.

Navigator is free and theres a fee if you use Tom Tom maps

Sygic is trial and uses Tom Tom maps as stated here "High quality maps from TomTom and other providers are stored on your Android phone"

So either way you pay

Agree you get what you pay for. When safety and ease of use comes to the fore whilst driving I am not going to choose a lesser free product. I think many people don't pay for the Tomtom maps anyway as they are easy to get off the net.

Don't buy, Google maps with navigation on android works bloody well. Only just available in thailand , Free as well Sent from my iPad using Thaivisa Connect Thailand

Impressive - yes, Google Maps will still move your blue dot around without a network connection, but you definitely need a connection to find your destination and route.

anyone use the HERE maps for Thailand ?
