Thailand GPS Turn by Turn Apps for Android

Featured Replies

There have been an improvement to number of offline Thailand turn by turn navigation apps in the google play market place for Android phones and tablets.

Papago Thailand

TomTom South East Asia

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tomtom.southeastasia

Ndrive Thailand

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ndrive.androidthailand

MapFactor

Sygic

Copilot lists it has maps for Thailand but I can not find it on google play and I did not find a Thailand or South East Asia version of Navigon.

Before my very recent jump in the Android world I used the papago maps on a powermap GPS (windows mobile) unit. I found it acceptable but not very detailed. Is there any other apps for Thailand I missed worth mentioning and or has anyone had any experience with these apps listed? It is a shame you can not demo these pay apps first to see how well they work. I am ready to buy but do not what app works well and what doesn't.

But google maps is not an offline mapping product and offline maps by google are not supported/allowed yet in Thailand.

Have you considered waze? It also presents traffic data very accurately. I'm not too sure about offline usage though.

Wazez if an online (internet connected app) navigation.

Yup it is but it is extremely useful especially with bangkok type traffic..

I plan to be in Bkk in 7 days driving myself to Chachoengsao and prachinburi for work.

Will be relying on waze exclusively so I hope it doesn't let up.

I fail to see the advantage of offline maps. Please explain from your point of view.

Google maps works over GPS signal alone (not internet) and I have been all over TH using it, no problems, although I have lost the GPS signal occasionally, same as I did in Europe. I do turn internet on when I get to Bangkok so that I get Wifi guidance for those last few kilometers.

I have nexus tablet with wifi only and which has dedicated GPS chip. I only have internet when connected to a wifi signal and google maps in Thailand are only available through an internet connect being some kind of 2g, 3g, or 4g mobile connection or wifi internet. So I do not have mobile internet connection to draw the google maps data from the internet so I need a map stored on the device. The problems with online maps are only available via an internet connection and depend on the internet being available. Right now I am trying Tomtom South East Asia, I received a one year live fully functional demo for Android for free. By the way a GPS signal does not supply map data only coordinates to match to a map.

How are the Thai maps? I have heard they are a bit outdated?

well I haven't paid for an internet connection for two months now and I still use GPS Google maps on my Samsung when I need it. Why complicate things?

I use Locus Pro. Works great. Your choice of a ton of online maps or you can install vector (offline) maps for free.

I'm still battling with this concept of offline maps, what is the advantage? Last time I did the 9 hour trip to Chiang Mai I pressed the navigation button in my Samsung. It showed me where I was, calculated a route for me (with alternatives) and gave me turn by turn spoken instructions all the way. (Google maps) I had to keep the battery charger going..

As I stated before, without internet connection. I tried plenty of alternatives and this is the best for me.

aRE YOU 100% SURE NO INTERNET. I'm not sure that i have ever got it working without some form of internet.. But will try tomorro.

Sir, I only use the internet function over wifi, I haven't paid for an internet connection for months now. I must admit that I didn't know this either when I bought it and invested ib=n an internet package when going on a trip.

OK.. going to try it today... be cool if it works. So I'm guessing you put in where your going when on wifi? Then leave!

I am just writing about my experience, maybe my phone has a special GPS chip or something. I usually set my destination at home, yes, but I have occasionally reset the destination or the route under way. I turn on 'use wireless networks' and 'use sensor aiding' when I get into Bangkok or other large town.

What operating system is your phone using (eg Android, iOS, Windows Mobile, etc)?

Sorry for my ignorance, how does turning on the wifi help when you are driving? I have GPS in my android but never considered turning on the wifi as well when driving cause I assume (wrongly?) that I wouldnt be able to access AIS so called hotspots while on the move.

cooked, I am using an Android phone. If you are also using a phone with the Android operating system, I can give you screen shots showing what icon is visible when

  • you are using WiFi
  • you are using mobile internet
  • you are using neither of the above

I have an Android, Samsung. Using Wifi and 'use sensor aiding' in addition to GPS in cities improves fixes and precision. The tall buildings can easily interfere with the GPS signal and Bangkok is difficult enough as it is. I don't use this outside of Bangkok. I do know what my phone looks like when I have wifi or internet turned up or not. I don't have internet on my phone because I haven't paid for an internet plan for months.

When I press the navigation button on my phone it asks me if I want to go to location settings. I do, and press enable GPS. It asks me if I want to use wifi and sensor aiding but as I say, I only do this when leaving the toll road in Bangkok. These three apps empty the battery quickly, and both using and charging at the same time can lead to your phone shutting down due to overheating. That's why I only use the GPS app where possible.

After reading all this it seem's a waste of time using the phone when doing a 8 hour trip. better just spend 3,900bt on a hand held Garmin with reliable Thai maps installed in English.

Eh? I don't often use the term BS, so I won't. I load the phone in the car, never had a problem, can't see what the advantage of having a Nav is unless you buy a top of the range model that you have to take out of the car, hiding the mount for it at the same time. to avoid theft. 12 hour trip no problem .

cooked, these are the icons at the top of the screen of a mobile Android device to show if and how you are connected to the Internet (red circles added by me); click on image to enlarge:

1. WiFi (wireless internet connection via LAN or hotspot)

post-21260-0-42920100-1391348464_thumb.p

2. Mobile Internet connection (ie via mobile carrier). The letter may vary, eg. H or E or G

3. No Internet connection

Unless your phone has offline maps and google maps does not have offline maps in Thailand. Your phone is getting data from the mobile phone data connection. Even without 3G internet data plan on your mobile phone it still has access to gprs(2g) internet when needed plan or no plan. No map data is sent over the air by way of the GPS/signal chip. All Map data either comes from offline (maps stored on the phone) or a data connect from mobile cellular connect or another type of internet connect like wifi. I bet if you removed your sim for your mobile carrier you would loose your data(internet) connect and loose your maps. Some samsung phones include free offline maps as a part of samsungs or/and phone shop customization.

I don't care, my Samsung is definitely the best option. It works, I never claimed to be an expert but this is a better option than the Tomtom I had in Europe and I don't pay anything for updates or whatever.

Android GT-S7500 which is a lot better than the iPhone I had before.

cooked, I don't seem to have the option of "use sensor aiding" on my Nexus 4; perhaps is a customisation of your Samsung model. Without Internet connection, after some distance I get a somewhat blurred Google Maps display. Is this the same on your phone?

1. Map display within limited range:

2. Map display outside limited range:
