Community Rare Asian Golden Cat Captured on Camera in Khao Luang National Park
Picture courtesy of Khaosod. In a rare and encouraging discovery for wildlife conservation, officials at Khao Luang National Park in Nakhon Si Thammarat have released images of an Asian Golden Cat, a protective wild feline, captured by a hidden camera deep within the park’s forest. Mr. Haritchai Ritchooay, Head of Khao Luang National Park, confirmed that the footage was obtained by the park’s scientific team and rangers from patrol unit 2 (Ai Khiao Waterfall). The footage shows a Temminck’s cat(Catopuma temminckii), commonly known as the Asian golden cat, confidently moving through the undergrowth, a rare sight that signifies a healthy ecosystem and well-preserved forest habitat. The image is the result of routine wildlife monitoring through camera traps, which have proven to be an essential tool in assessing species distribution and behaviour. The data collected will contribute to future conservation planning and threat prevention measures. “This sighting reflects the continuous dedication of our rangers and scientific officers who patrol and protect the forest tirelessly. It’s a strong indication that our forest ecosystem is thriving,” said Mr. Haritchai. Despite this positive development, officials warned of ongoing threats to rare wildlife. Illegal hunting, habitat destruction and the use of animal snares remain major concerns. Previous incidents involving golden cats caught in traps underscore the urgency of combating poaching and preserving critical habitats. Park authorities urged visitors to respect wildlife, refrain from littering, and report any illegal activities they witness within the national park. Responsible tourism is key to ensuring that sensitive species like the Asian golden cat continue to survive in the wild. The Asian golden cat is a medium-sized wild feline found in the forests of Southeast Asia. It is known for its sleek, reddish-brown coat, long legs and a distinctive pattern of 2–3 black lines running down the forehead. The cat’s dark upper tail and white underside of the tip are key identifying features. It is primarily nocturnal, prefers dense forests and hunts alone on the ground, preying on small mammals and birds. Its preferred habitats include bamboo thickets and montane rainforests. As a top predator, the golden cat plays a critical ecological role by regulating populations of small animals and maintaining forest balance. Its presence signals a well-functioning ecosystem. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) currently lists the species as Near Threatened (NT), meaning it is at risk of becoming endangered if threats continue or worsen. In Thailand, the species is protected under the Wildlife Preservation and Protection Act B.E. 2562 (2019). Violations, including hunting or harming protected species, carry fines up to 1.5 million baht and prison sentences of up to 15 years. The sighting at Khao Luang is not only a triumph for conservation but also a call to action to safeguard Thailand’s remaining wildlife treasures. Adapted by Asean Now from Khoasod 2025-07-09 -

Report Bangkok Senator Accused of Attempted Rape by Ex-News Anchor
Her story sounds like she is lying. Made sexual advancements in the car while driving her home. Then taking her forcibly to his condo? How exactly is this done without others seeing it or hearing it? Was she tied up and dragged into the building and then dragged into the room? Something just does not sound right in this. -
