Lopburi farmers lodge complaints of rice fraud to police



BANGKOK: -- Rice farmers in Lopburi province yesterday marched to the police station in the town of Lopburi to file rice fraud cases to the police after they are not paid for over four months.

They told the police that a total of 1,293 farmers have sold rice under the rice-pledging scheme of the government worth about 203 million baht. But until yesterday or over four months now that they still are not paid.

They said they decided to lodge complaints to the police to keep their rice voucher and statue of limitation to file legal case against the government valid.

Farmers said they wanted the government to pay them immediately.

Lopburi police chief was on hand to facilitate farmers to lodge complaints and asked them not to blockade highway.

He also told farmers that he would urge relevant government agencies to speed up payment to them.

In Phitsanulok, farmers still blockaded Indochina intersection to pressure speed payment by the government.

The police also are providing security measure to farmer leader Chatree Ampol who was life threatened if he did not remove the blockade.

A local police chief, however, assured farmers that they have the right to protest and would protect farmers from threats or harassment.

In Nakhon Sawan, farmers from five districts also gathered in front of Chaophraya university demanded immediate payment after having been rejected and postponed many times.

They said they will blockade Phaholyothin highway within the next few days if their demands are not met within this week. The blockade will paralyze traffic from the central region to the North.

In Tak province, farmers from 9 districts with rice vouchers also filed complaints to local authorities. More than 1,000 farmers have registered in the complaint documents.

Meanwhile, northern farmer association leader Prasit Boonchoey said farmers now are joining together for massive protest after it was clear now the caretaker government could never get money to pay farmers.

He said the 20-billion baht loan securing attempt by the government two days before the general election kicks off was just to lure farmers into thinking that it will pay them and then encourage them to go to the poll.

He said farmers would never listen to such tactics but would now consult action to join anti-government protest in the capital.

As myself and many others here on TV predicted, the rice scam will end in a trail of tears.

It is sort of interesting to see it unravel. But the real fun will start when a new government

takes over, and the money trail will be tracked. Now that will be REALLY interesting to see

where the money went to. Clearly it was not the farmers..... :-)

I generally do not delight in the misery of others, as that is the action of a twisted person.

But there sure does seem to be a bit of comeuppance here, or as the Thai say

som nam na. Voting for Thasin clones for 500 baht and a handful of empty promises sure has not worked

out well for the farmers in the bastion of red shirts, Isan....

So to get this right. Thaksins scheme failed. Rice farmers complain to Thaksins little helpers to ask that they file legal proceedings. Not going to happen. Thaksin will just have to ensure that the constitution is amended next time to ensure those pesky voters become inconsequential. Until that happens send Red Shirts into intimidate them and threaten their families.

What a swell form of democracy this is. Tell the farmers about the road of lies leading up to this day where the voice of the majority are held in contempt. Thaksins govt lied 5 days as well as 1 month and 8 days after the first rice payments were not paid by saying they had the money and YES it was in the budget. To reiterate, the PTP said twice on the 9th of October and the 12th of November that they had the money to pay the farmers until the end of February. Now, once more for the gullible. The rice farmers have not been paid since the 4th of October. On October 9 ( 60 days before dissolution of the PTP ) and 12th of November ( 27 days before dissolution of the PTP ) the PTP said they had the money for the rice scheme up until the end of February. They said don't worry. They said they didn't need any help from anyone. They do not need any loans. PTP were right, everyone else including IMF and World Bank were wrong. 1 day after the dissolution they apparently needed help and it is the EC's fault for not giving to them when even they banks don't want to give them loans. So it is the EC's and all the banks fault.

Yingluck will "wai" you on FB when she needs your vote. Her brother will f*kc you for the next 4 years. What a tag team.

If there are clever people under the Democrats or newly to be formed political parties, i would advice them to buy a lot of rice seeds, fertilizer and other farmer supplies and help out as many farmers as you can help, to prove to this poor lads that they and the Bangkokians do care about them.

This wil also be for sure the last time that the Thaksin clan has the majority of the voters in some of the rural areas.
