Thai polling stations might have to close if trouble on election day
BY AMY SAWITTA LEFEVRE
BANGKOK

(Reuters) - Thai authorities might close polling booths if violence erupts during Sunday's disputed election which could further undermine the credibility of a vote that is deemed incapable of restoring stability in the polarized country.

The government has vowed to push ahead with the general election despite threats by anti-government protesters, camped out at major intersections in Bangkok, that they will disrupt the polls in an attempt to stop Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra's Puea Thai Party from returning to power.

The anti-government protesters took to the streets in November in the latest round of an eight-year conflict that pits Bangkok's middle class, southern Thais and the royalist establishment against the mostly poor, rural supporters of Yingluck and her brother, former premier Thaksin Shinawatra, who was ousted in 2006.

The main opposition Democrat party, which backs the anti-government protests, is boycotting the election, which Yingluck's party is bound to win but without enough members to achieve a quorum in parliament.

EC officials look outside polling station, see 3 protesters show up - "EMERGENCY, VIOLENCE, CLOSE DOWN!"

Well that's what happens when the Police and the decisive. Commanding PM (caretaker) decide to do nothing!

We all saw the same pictures .. the Police could have easily kept most if not ALL of the polling stations clear.

Doesn't make any difference for a man in Dubai and his puppets who are practically electing themselves at the cost of the pro and anti government victim casualties.... whistling.gifwhistling.gifwhistling.gifwhistling.gif

Well, there is an election coming up. We should find out what the candidates platforms are during the campaign.

NBT Channel, has been running party commercials for weeks now! Where have you been?

My favorite of the non-PT ones is the party that want to remove laws like the compulsary bike helmet law, he thinks Thai people know when they need to wear a helmet and they shouldn't face fines if they don't wear helmets.

Fact is that in Bangkok and surrounding provinces there should legally no possibility to vote, because under the SOE gathering of people and holding politically motivated gatherings are forbidden...

No doubt, good point! When PTP start setting an example of being democratic, then maybe an election should be considered. Not just a vote buying farce of the rural farmers, knowing that Isaan has a large share of the voters, and that many are easy to manipulate. Curse the internet too, as some of those farmers are now waking up to what is going on. They're really running out of luck! Knew they would, and glad they are. Shutdown to restart the system!

Remember, no more than a crowd of 5, that way PTP have a chance to bring back the Dubai despot, before he gets too decrepit to get revenge.

If this election is a farce then this status quo is kept then Thailand has no Govt no functioning bodies which leads to anarchy surely then the paid court officials cannot stop the army and we may just get far more than anyone anticipated the rule of thugs with guns-coming out of the woodwork

I saw some campaign posters with a bicycle in it, is it the same one?!

I have true cable, but there seems to be hundreds of Thai channels I don't get, including a lot of 'news' channels. I have 200 channels for B1500 a month and my mother in law has 200 channels for B100 and I can find more to watch on hers.

Considering the EC wants to postpone the election they will use any excuse to shutdown the polling stations

Do you blame them for that?

About the picture... Yes,... An election in which the ruling pigs threaten, vote-buy, backstab terrorize the poor and elect themselves is by no means democracy....

And PTP still campaining, last time I see them coming with Government helicopter, no joke...Partys not allowed to campain in SoE, another point for nullifying this election...

Hitler have had a receipt for manipulate people: Give them a simple message, and repeat it every time. It working, and thats why a lot people still full of hate support them, brainwashed. You see some posters here too, repeating the same every time. Pushing the Taksin-regime is a must be, but for what a price? But the easy way is mostly the wrong way...wai2.gif

Its going to be a weekend of huffing and puffing in vain.

The election will be ruled as a good awful mess and struck from the records in the name of national embarrassment.

Probably as a result of it being held during a state of emergency. Possibly as a result of lack of attendance

Why do some people still keep trying to score with the old Nazi card ? Hitler also said "It is a blessing for us politicians that the average man is so incapable of thought" and he wasn't talking about the Thai farmers.

We in the US have ours, Thailand is soon to get theirs.

Funny thing is Obama is trying to do the same as PT, don't know who learned from who...He is trying to bypass the senate using so called 'executive orders' because he knows what is best for the country regardless of what anyone else thinks ( such as Obamacare, the rice scam of America )....

The midget opposition is so fobic, even paranoid knowing election results would vanish their existence that all methods seem to be 'allowed'. If you can't, let's ruin it is their credo. Not realizing in their emptiness, they all walk on a very very thin line. Yingluck will win. Ethics, behavior, peace keeping initiatives, calmness, dignity, intelligence, grace, AND popularity. Both Abhisit and Hush Puppy can't even stand in her shadow. Wait 72 hours and you'll see........Thais will vote!

What campaign? There hasn't been one from the PTP. Lord knows what their policies are. But then again, policies and the voting public are secondary to lining their pockets.

I wanted to see Yingluck vs. Abhisit on national television in a live debate the last time. PT's policies would then have been shown up as farcical. If the reds are as smart as they say they are, they would have seen right through it.
