What with all the election stuff going on, my work has shut up shop for the next 7 days. Wahoo!

I'm thinking the most fun would be to do several day trips - in 14 months living here I have seen nothing of the area around Bangkok. In fact the only time I left the city was to go to CM for a week.

I don't have transport, so getting there/back is something I have to consider.

Any recommendations, places people have been to?

Kanchanaburi looks nice but I thought too far to get there and back in a day? I cant stay overnight on the off chance my work un-shuts all of a sudden.

There is already a site named that: bangkok-daytrips. again by the Barrow of the Paknam fora. It is of course rather weak on transport info.

Be aware that many of the Thai-aimed places are weekend only. Some more info re your interests might be useful-otherwise just open that guidebook.

You can easily as buses and vans run until 8-9pm from Kan.

Depending on where you live suggest that you take a van from Century Plaza south of Victory Monument - there is also a better van company just north of Centruy past the 7/11 - and then return by the 4:26pm train back to BKK.

Ideally, take the morning train from Thonburi station (7:50am) all the way to Nam Tok as you do some of the old 'Death Railway' route after Kan, then back to Kan by 3pm where you can hang out and catch a van back early evening.)

Mahachai can also be a nice day trip as can hang out by the river at numerous seafood restaurants - again by train from Wong Wian Yai is a scenic way to do it.

Nakhon Pathom with the Wat & place gardens and can take in Putthamonthon on the way.

Nakhon Nayok waterfall is another.

Even dinner down by the sea at Samut Prakhan past Paknam.

Koh Kret in Pak Kret is technically another nice 'out of BKK' day trip thougg best for the weekend market.

Loads of Thais like to do Bang Seang beach for seafood on day trips.

Even Lopburi and the monkeys...

Plenty of info on the net about all of those.

Check out Klong Sa Bua and Water Theatre in Ayutthaya.

Some call it a floating market but it far from that!

Only open on weekend only and they put on five different shows each day.

Also Erawan Museum, Samuthprakan, just on the east side of Bangkok.

A very different kind of museum.

Could probably get to it by skytrain now with the extension.
