When you cut off a branch, what is it you paint on it and is it available here in los in upcountry areas ?

I imagine it is not a big deal here, like who would give a rats about a tree...let alone just cutting off a brach and dressing it.

I ask because a Makro damaged a couple of trees last couple of days and I wish to protect them, some I planted that I sourced the seeds from a particular tree over near Kanchanaburi...the other is a big old 50+ year old tree that a chunk off bark was knicked out of.

I have heard of just paint, but cannot imagine the poisons in the paint are good for it.

I have used pitch (tar or asphalt) as a paint for tree wounds before. I believe all it does is seal the wound to stop bugs getting in. A google search should yield enough info on making your own mixture. Not sure if you can buy a ready made mixture here or not.

Painting tree wounds and cuts was in vogue about twenty five years ago but most arbourists nodays will just make sure the wound is clean and has no surfaces that can habour disease. If it is clean it will heal itself quicker. The paints were found to trap fungi and aid in the rotting of the wood and generally not to be of any benefit.. You may need to make a another clean cut if the branch has not been cut well , and then leave it to callas over. As for the wound, use a sharp knife and clean up the edges of the wound. Think of it as similar to how you treat a wound on a human.

Later you can fertilize and make sure the tree is well watered and the general health of the tree/s is attended to .

You could refer to AS 4373—2007 Pruning of amenity trees for definitive reference or any other recent publication for tree pruning . This is from Google images so a google search may also help..

^thanks.

Unfortunately the Makro did the pruning, so not so clean...I was going to go and cut the branches off clean today.

Unfortunately one branch ripped long way down the trunk, so kinda wanted to cover that as big wound and I grew this tree from seed.

The other very big tree will heal no problem on its own...I'll just clean up the edges and loose bark around it.

Thanks
