Transfer of Tourist Visa to New Passport

Featured Replies

Hi!

First time post so apologies if this is the wrong section! :)

Ok advice needed. My "situation" is that I'm on a double entry Tourist Visa until March 10th. My UK passport runs out on August 14th so my "six months" expires on Feb 14th. I have applied for a new one a week ago. My question is this; once I receive my new passport can I transfer my stamps from my old passport and then do a "visa run" to get an extension of stay? I haven't started working yet as my visa prohibits it however this is a long term plan. I have also not sent my old passport as I read Thailand was one of the few

countries where I didn't need to. Any help/advice and guidance much appreciated!

Thanks!

In your case, nothing needs to be transferred from the old to the new passport. As long as the tourist visa in your old passport is still valid for travel to Thailand, travel with both passports and show them both to the Thai immigration officer on arrival, the old one for the visa, the new one to get the new arrival stamp, and be sure to write the visa number on the arrival card as always. On your first departure from Thailand with your new passport, the officer will want to see your latest arrival stamp in the old passport and he will place the departure stamp in your old or new passport, as he pleases; it does not matter.

The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place

Thanks Maestro. That's put y mind at rest a little! Anyone else got any advice perhaps had a similar situation in the past and want to share? :)

It is exactly as Maestro says. But they certainly will transfer your last entry/permit to stay stamp to your new passport and stamp you out in it.

Ok great had read somewhere that they won't transfer old stamps / old passport to new passports anymore. Seem to get a differing opinions but thanks a lot for the info :)

Hi All, just an update, as quite a bit of advice on here seems to say, you don't need to transfer your visa, just take the visa in the old passport, and your new passport to the boarder. I can tell you today, this is not the case currently. It is true, you can transfere your visa here at immigration (not at the boarder, but at the separate office a mile down the road), as you can in Bangkok, but ONLY if you have the letter/certificate from your embassy. I was not given one of these when I collected my new passport, and have just been categorically turned away at the boarder at Nong Khai. I don't even want to use the visa again, i just want to leave. But rules be rules. Fyi, it has to be the original letter to. Back to Bangkok and the embassy for me... Not all is lost,I never would have stayed in Nong Khai otherwise, and it's lovely! I will try again tomorrow before I leave, so I will let you know if the situation changes. Thanks
