My New Website (or Webhost?) Banned By Thai Police

I'm working on a new website, and today when I opened it up I discovered...it's been banned!!!!

The bizzarre thing is that I haven't finished it yet, so there's *no content on it at all*. I haven't even finished registering the domain name yet either, so I'm using a temporary URL provided by my webhost to access it: http://72.29.87.109/~andaman/

Which redirects you to the 'ban': http://www.mict.go.th/ci/iiijjjIllllllllllllllI.html

Is there a way to get it delisted or to report a 'mistake'? I'm also curious - has anyone been asked for money to 'delist' their site?

Strange because it doesn't go the the usual cybercop page but a page with only this on it: ขอโทษไม่ได้ปิดกั้นเว็บไซต์นี้

"Sorry but can not open this web site"

Seems things are getting worse with their heavy handed actions. Would be interested to know how one goes about de-listing a site that was blocked in error.

It's banned even the url you posted with my adsl (showing the usual page)

Is it a subdomain? Maybe the whole domain is banned?

the government has employed many many (wasnt it 1000 ?) extra people to search the web for "illegal" websites or what is their understanding of being illegal. after they banned all they could find, they wouldn't have work to do and probably loose their jobs..... so its more than logical they will continue to just do random BANS only to show they do have still work to do, even there is nothing illegal with the website..... (or me thinks, any foreign website is considered to be illegal nowadays) or would you like to loose ur job ?

am I wrong ?

Looks like the site has been banned again, I got the police msg just now.

I'm starting to see a trend of inoffensive tourism oriented websites being banned. We could speculate that there are certain people in the Thai tourism industry who ask their cyber police friend to block the competing site. On the other hand, it doesn't exactly block the site worldwide, only for visitors from within Thailand, so for the most part blocking such sites is ridiculous. Are they really that stupid???

the government has employed many many (wasnt it 1000 ?) extra people to search the web for "illegal" websites

I don't know where that figure comes from, I seriously doubt it. I'd suspect there might be, at most, a dozen people in the entire "cyber police" operation. Whenever you get the police msg, there is a form on a linked page to encourage people to submit "offensive" site URLs. That's probably how they get most of their leads. I've taken it upon myself from time to time to submit some very popular sites which contain questionable images, such a flikr.com. I figure if they ban a site like that there will be greater awareness of the stupidity of their "service".

I really hope you are wrong AsiaWolfie, But i got a horrible feeling what you have put above is the way it will go, if it hasnt already,..? knowing how thais are they will probably do as you say and you can be sure it will be an incredibly hard task getting the ban lifted...

Not good news at all...

The fact that the site above, with no content, has had a ban put in place doesnt look good does it, especially after he has taken action and it has been banned again....crazy

When I go through my US based proxy server, it is working. I can't even get it pull up without going through my proxy server which tell me that your server is very slow. I would try to deal with that ASAP.

My guess is that they banned the IP address. I am also willing to bet that someone else on that IP address is banned. When a host has 3000 to 4000 sites on one server, these things happen. It very well may go away once you get a domain name for it.

By the way, if anyone PM me with a site, I can check any site to see if it is reachable from the US or not and/or whether the site is banned in Thailand.

Ok there's a twist on this:

* My site is not accessible from home (I use True ADSL).

* But it is accessible at Starbucks, where I spent most of the day working (KSC hotspot).

Does anyone know if the bans are conducted at the ISP level, or higher up the chain (eg. CAT) ?

The site itself is on a US-based server, so only people in Thailand should have a problem with it.

Alarmed :D I just was in contact with my (Dutch) hoster. Because of reasons of these kind of problems they bann in their hosting-contract spam and sex :D .

So, when I understand it all well as a dummy the main problem is not your site but certain collegues using the server for porno purposes. So for a lot of people using their sites it can be a problem to stay out of the hands of :o
