Renewal of retirement visa

Featured Replies

Is there a grace period for delay in doing the renewal before penalties are applied? I know that the renewal can be done a week or so in advance but what about applying a week or so after the expiry date?

Do you actually have a "visa" ?

If so it cannot be "renewed" in Thailand.

There is no "grace period" once the "visa " has expired the overstay fine starts adding up !

You can apply for a new extension of stay up to 30 days early. Any day after your current one runs out is a day of overstay and can even result in having to start all over again by getting a new visa entry.

oldoc think its terminology again and again, people do not seem to know what they have stamped in there passports its a real shame

Agreed !

Maybe I should have been "gentler" in my response !

It is the terminology if you do not know what to ask for how do you get your message across. I know people who have been here for several years still calling an extension of stay a visa extension. In the end they pay someone to do a very easy process for them.

Yes, it's understandable for a newbie, but some people have been here for years/decades and still have no idea on what basis they're allowed to stay in the country. 90 day reporting, renewal of extensions of stay, visa runs, visa exempt entry, VOA ... it'a all a mystery. Bad enough for themselves, but then they also offer advice to others, perpetuating the confusion.

Is it any wonder some people seem to have so many problems dealing with Immigrations or why Immigrations Officers lose patience with some of these characters?

Ok, gentlemen & old hands, I confess to having erred. I should have used the term extension annual non-immigrant O (retirement) - visa or stay. I'm certain that the airport immigration officers refer to it as a visa, whose number for instance has to be entered on the arrival form as a 'visa' number.

Anyway, I'd be most grateful if anyone has an answer to my question about how far past the expiry date I can go before applying for the extension.

triffid: Did you read ubonjoe's response? There is no grace period. If you apply after your extension of stay has expired, you may have to leave the country to get a new visa or visa waiver and start the whole process of converting to a nonimmigrant O visa, then getting an extension of stay (not a visa!) all over again. Better to apply for a new extension of stay before your present one expires.

Actually, I am flabbergasted that similar questions are asked EVERY DAY on TV. I wonder why nobody reads through the visa forum posts first. Oh well, I guess it keeps traffic on the site high and the questions ARE patiently answered.

Yes, with at least always one needing to be pedantic about the real name as opposed to what's stamped in the passport. tongue.png

As said you have to apply for a new Extension of Stay before the current one expires. Not after.

Once it expires you are liable to an overstay fine of 500 Baht a day.

Thanks. I was distracted by people's frustration over terminology but I now have the definitive, if unwelcome, answer viz. no delay allowed.

You cannot go past the expiration date if you do start the process over, hopefully you have put in the number for your re-entry permit when you leave.

There is no grace period like you have for 90 day address reports. Repeat, no grace period...renew before it expires or start all over--and that's no fun.

What's actually stamped in my passport are the words "Extension of stay permitted up to ........."

Not a dickey-bird mention of any "Visa"!!

But hardly surprising people get things mixed up......post-64390-0-04333600-1392871789_thumb.j

And really what is more pedantic not offering any real info or giving it a shot

hehehehe even immigration is confused

Whether you can extend after your current extension expires is subject to the discretion of the Immigrations Office/Officer, I think.

I've read reports that trying to extend a couple days after the expiration resulted in needing to exit/re-enter the country to get a new permission to stay, BUT a couple years ago I screwed up and mis-remembered the expiration date of my extension and showed up two days after it expired. Though I had to pay two days' overstay fine, a new one-year extension was granted without having to leave the country.

As they say, YMMV. I think it is probably best to assume the worst scenario and schedule accordingly, i.e. absolutely plan to get the extension before the current one expires.
