BANGKOK, Feb 21 - The pro-government United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD), the Red Shirt movement, will gather on Sunday in the northeastern province of Nakhon Ratchasima to map out its future strategic moves.

UDD leaders Tida Thavornset, Nattawut Saikua, Jatuporn Prompan, Korkaew Pikulthong, Weng Tojirakarn, and Yoswaris Chuklom announced at a news conference that the upcoming gathering will focus on strategies to deal with the ongoing political situation and how to manage a national reform in several dimensions.

The move is aimed at making a stronger and more united UDD policy to tell society what is truly wanted by Thais, she noted. It will also be the ultimate move of the UDD leaders to counter anti-government protesters led by Suthep Thaugsuban, secretary-general of the People's Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC), whom she said is defying law enforcement leading to deaths and injuries.

The UDD leader said although the movement does not have army chief Gen Prayuth Chan-ocha to stand by them, the group have the people that do.

Ms Tida asked UDD supporters to follow their leaders' speeches Sunday, starting at 8am until evening, in order to know their thinking. (MCOT online news)

Is this a rally or just a meeting of the leaders? Either way, how can they map out the future strategic moves if all they're doing is going to be giving speeches?

I wonder if Tida and the rest of the Communists intend to return to the jungle and start a Khmer Rouge type insurrection like they did before.

Your statement is a simplistic attempt to raise the bogeyman of "commies". It is 2014, not 1950 and Senator Joe McCarthy the master of manipulation drank himself to death long ago.

Professor Thavornseth was an accomplished microbiologist and had a career on the rise until she made the sacrifice to join the pro-democracy uprising in 1973. It was that uprising that ended the brutal military dictatorship that had ruled Thailand with an iron fist. Subsequent to the 1976 massacre of students at Thammasat University and the reinstallation of the military dictatorship, her name was put on a target list for execution by the death squads that were roaming Thailand at the time killing the opponents of the military dictatorship. Yes, she fled to the jungle and the only group to offer her protection and support were the communists. She had no other option. It was flee or end up raped and dead in a field. She hid out for 6 years enduring hardship and suffering, all because she believed in democracy. She was non violent and it has never ever been alleged that she engaged in any acts of violence. She is the one UDD leader who has remained firm in her belief in non violence.

GK. So your rewriting history again again. Thida was a member of the Communist party before the uprising.

But you are correct she is the ONLY UDD leader to not talk violence. Possibly because she became leader AFTER 2010 and learns from others mistakes!

After accomplishing all that what a sad, bitter and brianwashed person she has become.

She was a social democrat, not a communist. She, like many other Thais were pushed into the welcoming arms of the Thai communists thanks to the draconian military dictatorship of the era. Thailand was an oppressive country during that period squashing any attempt at an attempt to modernize and liberalize society. Anyone who opposed the dictatorship was branded a commie. It was a convenient way to deal with those who spoke in favour of democracy.

What you failed to mention is that all of that was blessed and encouraged by the government of the USA. Be fair.

A meeting of great minds this Sunday! The collective IQ of the gathering will shoot through the roof in double digits! clap2.gif

And what was the subject of your doctoral dissertation? I find it odd that people who are uneducated and who probably have IQs that are themselves subject to ridicule, have the temerity to make derisive comments about people they are not in a position to judge. Are you envious or something?
