Anti secession banners scatter in Chiang Mai

CHIANG MAI: -- Huge banners reading “Chiang Mai people will absolutely never let anyone to divide Thailand” were seen placing on pedestrian overpasses at major intersections throughout the northern city today.

The 2-meter wide cloth banners were seen placed at pedestrian overpasses on several roads which included Boonruangrite, Kumuang, Mahidol and several elevated interchanges throughout the city.

The emergence of the anti-secession banners came after the Third Army Region began to get tough with red-shirt people who it said has substantial evidence to point the finger to the red-shirt hardliners and red-shirt community radio moderators responsible for placing secession banners on pedestrian overpasses last week.

Chiang Mai residents said the anti-secession banners were placed by government authorities of unknown agencies.

The Third Army filed a complaint with the police asking them to impose treason charge against the group calling itself “ Sor Por Por Lanna” or the People Republic of Lanna which has in the past conducting activities that was tantamount to secession of the country to establish a new independent state called Sor Por Por Lanna.

Meanwhile a source in the Third Army said they had gained evidence showing a Pheu Thai party MP of Lamphun province was involved and supported the Sor Por Por Lanna establishment.

The evidence has been sought from the opposition party for use in filing petition to the Constitutional Court to dissolve the party.

Red-shirt hardliner Petcharawat Watanapongsirikul yesterday denied he was involved in secession call by the Sor Por Por Lanna and never engaged any activities with the group.

He said he is just an advisor to the Rak Chiang Mai 51 Group and has no thought whatsoever to divide Thailand.

But he admitted that he might speak in anger when northern people were looked down upon which sometimes he couldn’t control and then spoke out in anger which he did not mean it seriously.

However he acknowledged when the Army filed charge against him with the police and was ready to defend himself in the court, and also to counter the Army with legal suit for the treason charges.

now how exaggerated were the red claims that the north were all behind their idea of seperation, seems they dont know how to count or the people of Thailand no longer fear them and their bully boy tactics. Democracy at work, people telling the reds exactly what they want and reds cant do a thing about it except lie and deny they even suggested it.

Good grief, is it possible to get any more wild, unsupported generalisations in single post? Get a grip please.

But he admitted that he might speak in anger when northern people were looked down upon which sometimes he couldn’t control and then spoke out in anger which he did not mean it seriously. He admits again he has spoken about secession.

The only wild unsupported generalization is the one this bozos spouted about 80% of "Lanna" wanting an independent state. (and the other 20% were invited to leave if they didn't like it)

Good stuff. Unity not division. Peace, progress and social enhancement for all citizens. This is their basic democratic right in the 21st century. They need to demand more of their political representatives, and not demand factional ostracism of other citizen groups.

I would say 80/20 AGAINST separation would be about right.

How fast a conviction can crumble ! All that tough talk on red shirt radio, all those rallies - including one attended by two cabinet ministers - all those banners, all those public addresses in Chiang Mai, all those press releases - it was all " pretending ". They were " not serious ". All it took was legal pressure to be brought to bear on those who simply thought these calls could stand unchallenged - just shows how easily they can cave when the public sits up and takes notice. The light at the end of the tunnel is that if this prominent red shirt leader's convictions can crumble so easily, then perhaps other red shirt leaders will take pause before initiating or organizing any similar " pretending " in the future.

Just wait till the red rabble get up to speed, will be interesting to see how they spin this one away from reality.

I think the there is no doubt the signs were posted during the night by men in black associated to the PDRC to stir up trouble with the 600,000 strong Red Army.

Nice try at some spin, but no prize - sorry, waiting for one of the expert spinners to wake up and start typing some real spin.

Did those mysterious men in black also hypnotize Red Shirts into saying the things they said?

Everybody, but everybody, knows the men in black are responsible for all the problems in Thailand. Remove the MIB and everything will be coming up roses.

So much for the Army remaining neutral and apolitical. Why should the army feel that they need to be the ones to file legal action against an individual or group ? Surely that is a matter for the governing body of that army. Looks as though the military are maybe about to open their fly.

Its all a misunderstanding. 80% of Lanna likes a good session.

facepalm.

What is all this secession business all of a sudden?
I follow the news- or what passes for news here- all the time. Suddenly there's another separatist group in the north and nobody mentioned it before. Slightly more confused than usual.

Why are people in the north trying to separate?

There is a great difference in political separation from the central Government in Thailand and complete separate states!

The end product sought by Northern Red Shirt leaders is to decentralizing government in Thailand, having a separate but equal states within the country of Thailand , with their own elected leaders and own laws that do not conflict with the federal laws of the nation. Each particular state can address problems within the states which would put a stop to the mega project that have been the bases a corruption in Thailand for decades.

Number one it is a legal political separation placed before its resident citizens of the target political subdivision in a referendum election. That is the legal separation that the Red shirts had announced they were seeking prior to the Army's actions.

The Army has the right to accuse but they should make certain their information is correct as it could result with these army leaders becoming the target of libel suits!

Cheers
