If it is the same in Aussie as NZ he can get a longer visa from the Thai consulate in Aussie.

It would be helpful if it were explained exactly what these "longer visas" are and how to qualify for them.

Just cleared immigration. 1000 baht for 4 days. Let me off two of the overstayed days.

Took almost 10 minutes because there was a trainee on who tried to mask lack of experience bybcontinuously making jokes. The supervisor was not impressed when he said to me please - overstay again next time. I need the training.

"Also he will have a kid soon, so what is the best visa to get for supporting his kid if he decides not to get married just yet?"

If not married or in possession of court generated "legalisation" papers there is no "visa" I know of that would permit your friend an extended stay on the basis of having a baby.

I may of course be wrong if so someone will quickly correct this post !

I have two Thai kids and am not married to the mother, but I do get a one year multi-entry (90 days per visit) O visa every year due to the kids.

You may find that it is going to be harder to get that visa the next time you apply without documents to prove you are the legal father of your children that can only be obtained by having your parenthood legitimized.
