Dealing With "Kurusapa" Regarding The Teacher's License....

Recommended Posts

    Hello and Sawasdee Khrap,

I was planning to sign up for a Master's in English on first of April ( no fool's day joke now, please) at the Rajabhat, in the province where I'm working .

All went nice when talking to the supervisor for foreigners and I really wanted to bite the bitter apple to go for it on weekends for about four years. Only 7-8 K/month for tuition fee per semester.

I'm holding a BA in social pedagogy, thought that course would give me my TL, plus enabling me to start at another school, being on my second provisional license now. ( But still okay until next year in April, if I'd stay)

Now after receiving an e-mail from Kurusapa, in their usual weird English, it seems that such a course wouldn't qualify for a TL. Honestly speaking, I know less now, than I knew before.

I've to add, that I'\m a sort of in the dark, as it seems to be very difficult to find out what they want to see and what not. I could also ask the pope about the percentage of gold hamsters' virginity with a similar outcome.

If that's not working out, I thought I'd give it a try and go for the tests, of course with some preparation. Now here's the one million Kip question:\

Does anybody have an idea if a Master's in English, plus my existing BA would give me green light?

I'm really confused, as I was sure that such a degree would show that I  actually do something, beside holding seminars for school directors to prepare them for the upcoming AEC, plus seminars for Thai high school and primary school teachers.

I can't get an honest answer from Kurusapa and I'm also aware that some people had a;ready started such a weekend course.

Any advice would be deeply appreciated. Wish you all a great weekend.-wai2.gif

One thing you could do with the co-operation of your school and after checking with the local labor office is to take on the title of "Trainer" thereby bypassing the whole Teacher license quagmire. It will depend on the labor dept. as to how long they will let it 'ride' -be sure to take a senior teacher with you, someone with gravitas not just an office worker/secretary This worked in Sisaket for a colleague but I can't say whether it will work other places or if even they may of stepped in to stop the practice.

What I think is strange is that my 10 year license expired last just at the end of my final year of teaching. I decided to take a year off to refresh myself. You can not renew a license without contract. I guess I thought it would be like renewing your passport or drivers license-- not having to prove you're going to use them.

If you do not have a degree in education, you can get the provisional license, but you do have to meet the full qualifications.   That is what the thread is addressing.

If you started teaching a long time ago, I believe before 2003, then you are 'grandfathered' in  if you had a license at that time.

I think the 'permanent' license has to be renewed every 5 years.

I am not 100% sure on all this, so corrections are welcomed.

I believe only education degrees make you eligible for a teacher license.

Conference No.3/2557 of the Ministry of Education

2) Accreditation of degree/diploma certificates in education: The issues are as follows:

- The criteria for degree accreditation at all level, both teaching and educational management professions:

Teacher Profession: 5 year curriculum, Graduate diploma, master degree, or doctorate

Educational management profession: Graduated diploma, master degree, or doctorate

- Graduates in the curriculums that were certified by the Teacher's Council must sit an examination before obtaining a professional license.

- Professional training for administrators of educational institutes and educational administrators must be a curriculum certified by the Teacher's Council

- Educational Institutes must accept students according to the plan defined in the curriculum. The proportion of teachers to students should be 1:30 and that of educational supervisors to students 1:10

- Educational Institutes must offer curriculums that have already been approved by the institutes and the Teacher's Council for at least 60 days before the starting date of the course. There must be monitoring of the empirical results of the curriculums on at least one occasion.

Labor department and Immigration Sisaket are much different to those in Ubon Ratchathani. Once you'd worked many years, being employed as an English teacher, it's difficult to change the job title into a trainer, as they seem to be aware of that practice.

Again, it differs from province to province.-wai2.gif

I think it was 2004, as I'd started in 2005, sent all documents to Bangkok's TCT, including 500 baht for the license, then laws were changed and nothing happened.

Of course did they not send me the money back.

As stated before a Bachelors in Education or a Masters in education or a teacher's license from your home country. I do believe that the Praxis 1 and 2 test will also count.

A degree in English doesn't count nor does Matesol, unless the Matesol is a degree in education with a special focus in tesol.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Well, I had received some phone calls from the supervisor of the local Rajabhat, as I'd told her that I'm not interested in such a Master's in English that could only replace toilet paper. * Anyways, I'm used to the bum gun)

Same supervisor attends at BA TESOL somewhere in a bigger city of the northeast. Before getting in touch with Kurusapa again, I'd rather like to raise buffaloes together with my daddy in law.

Here's the new one million Kip question: ( Will reward those who come up with the right answer with 100,000 Kip, paid cash, under the table)

Can't afford yo pay 20,000 baht, as I don't want you to become headhunters as well.

Would a BA in TESOL made/upgraded at a Thai university, considering my existing BA in social pedagogy, enable me to apply for a TL?

Any ideas how long that would take, where to go to, etc..would be deeply appreciated.-wai2.gif

I believe that only degree studies that consist of the following 11 curriculum standards are eligible for a teacher license (previously 9 curriculum standards).

Unofficial Translation.

1) ความเป็นครู – Being a teacher

2) ปรัชญาการศึกษา  - Educational philosophy

3) ภาษาและวัฒนธรรม – Language and culture

4) จิตวิทยาสำหรับครู – Psychology for teachers

5) หลักสูตร  – Curriculum

6) การจัดการเรียนรู้และการจัดการชั้นเรียน - Learning Management and Classroom Management

7) การวิจัยเพื่อพัฒนาการเรียนรู้  – Research for Learning Development

8) นวัตกรรมและเทคโนโลยีสารสนเทศทางการศึกษา - Innovation and Information Technology for Education

9) การวัดและการประเมินผลการเรียนรู้ –  Educational Measurement and Evaluation

10) การประกันคุณภาพการศึกษา - Educational Quality Assurance

11) คุณธรรม จริยธรรม และจรรยาบรรณ  – Good Morality and Ethics

The university credit value has to be at least 24 credits.

Thanks a lot. Couldn't be better explained. Where should I send the Kip to? Please page me and send me your bank details.

Just heard that so many people working for a well known agency won't get a work permit in the future. Seems that they'll just be replaced by guys who are able to get a provisional TL.

There's a Master's TEFOL at Thai universities, but also not accredited by the TCT.

Isn't it best waiting to see what happens? I believe right now we are in a transition period where they are changing the rules about the teachers license, aren't we?

Scott, re your post No.5

I taught here from 1997 to 2003. On my return to Thailand in 2007 I received my Teachers license "grandfathered" from my first time teaching here.

It is permanment for one's teaching life here but has to be renewed every 5 years, and recommended that it is renewed 6 months before expiry. Understand the same rules apply to Thai teachers as well.

But you do have to show educational improvement within those 5 years. Seminars, courses etc. I think at least 3. Best to check!

I have a TL and the school just did the 5 year renewal. I did not have to show any seminars or courses.

What paperwork was required?

Actually, I don't know, the school took care of it. I didn't provide them with anything other than a new photograph. They had asked for a copy of my transcript, but I said it was provided years ago. I think they had a faxed copy that had probably faded, but then later said it was OK.

You were lucky then. 2 TL holders at my school have had to. Maybe your school are good on publisher or Photoshop!

Seems to be a good time now, as they even issue a third provisional when you're working at the same school for longer.

Best is to go to the TCT in person, was there last week, and could pick up my third on the same day. Exactly three hours later.....

I started five months too late to be grandfathered, I remember that i paid money for my TL in 2006, but then laws were changed.

The personnel woman at our school went to the MOE (I presume that she meant the Kru sapa) find out exactly what we could do to get licenses. They told her that there are currently NO English language MEd course in Thailand that they will accept! blink.png

So. at the moment, the only way to get a teacher's license is to show them a BEd or MEd from your home country or a Teaching License from your home country. However, they seem to be in the process of re-writing their rules and will hopefully approve some kind of in-country way to get licensed.

Of course, this is the TCT that gave her this information and I wouldn't be surprised if the person at the next desk would say something entirely different!ermm.gif

I'd reckon to go there in person, which i did just a week ago and received my third provisional license.

it's especially easy, when you're already working at your school for a couple of years.

Best of luck.

If you want to teach here
Get a proper qualification!!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Qualified_Teacher_Status
https://www.gov.uk/qualified-teacher-status-qts

An MA in English is of no use

In Thailand they want a B'ed or a BA with M'ed (or teaching license from home country and BA)

So they have officially said they will accept M' ed's? I hadn't heard.
