Dual nationals dilemma

Featured Replies

Hello, I am having a dilemma about my two passports. I am English/Australian and my partner Swiss/German. At the moment we are both in Penang on our Australian and Swiss passports. We want to cross by land into Thailand on our English and German as the g7 nations get a thirty day visa instead of fifteen by land. I have read some forums and it appears to be problematic. What should we do??

I swapped passports at the Brunei land border without a hassle however my parter tried to leave Singapore on his Swiss and enter peninsular malaysia on his German and they refused to stamp his German instead making him enter as a Swiss national.

Will it make a difference we go to Langkawi and enter thailand by boat?

Thank you

Between land borders they will want you to use the passport use used to enter and leave the other country with.

Only other option is to fly in.

Is this for all borders? I did leave Brunei on my English and then enter Malaysia on my Australian using the land border.

We both have malaysian stamps in our German and English passports, will this make a difference?

All you can do is try. Since you have been out of Thailand for longer than just a quick turnaround they might be more agreeable,

The border crossings a problem is because they look for the stamps for entering/departing the other country to be sure you did enter the other country.and didn't just clear immigration and turnaround and come back without entering the other country.

I am not sure if it would be any different by sea but it could be that they won't check like they do by land.

If you want to switch nationalities on a land border crossing, I suggest to show them the stamps in the other passport. Since you are legit travellers and not border runners, they might agree.

Not sure though, please report back what happened.
