Thai government should actually do something about this culture of taking foreigners passport to rent a $500 motorbike its ridiculous. But we all know nothing will be done. In the 20 years of going to Thailand and renting MB's I have never lost my passport its best to sus out the person ask them if it will be locked up etc its all you can do. I wouldn't give anything to those cu*** on beach road try other smaller places preferably if your guest house rents them out its better than someone on the street.

when i go to pattaya i usually rent a ducatti

its a 400,000 thb bike and if i crash it i get the bill

if i KNOWINGLY enter such a deal i dont get to complain later

i could have walked around with passport in pocket but i CHOSE not to

the company have no comeback if if i crash that 400k bike into a 2 million thb car

and insurance pays 60% if even so all they can do is restrict my leaving thailand

by not having a passport until i honour my part of the deal and pay the bill if a crash happens

I would "never" give my passport to anybody. If they demand it, i offer a photo copy. That is sufficient, they can take that to police to get me stopped . If that is not good enough .........Too bloody bad, no deal. Only a careless fool hands over his/her PP to unknowns.

leaving them a photocopy doesnt prevent you skiping into cambodia or failing to return the vehicle

I guess this is a little bit on topic since the passports were stolen in Thailand and tickets bought in Thailand. I have never had Hertz or Avis do more than copy part of my passport. I would never give a rental place my passport nor have I been asked. I would consider any rental agency that insisted on my passport suspect and would walk out.

My experience all over the world with Hertz and Avis is that you can't rent a car without a credit card, either.

Firstly I can hold my breath for over a minute, but with the sudden air pressure going from 6000ft to over 35,0000ft altitude virtually instantaneously, this is going to do a lot of damage to the human body, "barotrauma" The ear drums wound almost certainly burst, also the lungs would also suffer excessive trauma also the air temperature will drop to temperatures never experienced by most people.

firstly anything not bolted down will end up flying around the cabin, any moisture in the air will mist as the air temperature drops, as your ears burst you will suffer excruciating pain: to add to that your lungs will burst, and nitrogen in the blood will start to bubble up at the joints causing even more pain, but this will not last long, you probably will not even have time to workout what happened before you slip into unconsciousness. the rest you will not know about.

It strikes me as absolutely incredible that the immigration officers who checked these 2 particular passports at KUL departures were apparently unable to determine for some reason or other that they were included in the Interpol database of lost or stolen travel documents

(http://www.interpol.int/INTERPOL-expertise/Databases) through swiping the data pages through their scanners, as seems to be the standard practice worldwide nowadays.

That said, every database is, of course, only as useful as the information fed into it. Had neither passport yet been entered into the Interpol database by immigration officials here in Thailand where they had been stolen, this strikes me as utterly inexcusable, particularly in the case of the passport stolen 18 months ago. Clearly immigration officials worldwide (and not just here in Thailand) may need to sharpen up their act to ensure that stolen passports are now recorded on the Interpol database with the absolute minimum delay.

AFAIK airline check-in staff dont have access to scanners as used by immigration officers, so it would be all but impossible for them to determine on the basis of a cursory visual inspection whether or not a particular passport was stolen. However, I do believe there now to be a strong case for airline check-in staff also to be provided with these scanners, in order to reassure the travelling public on a belt-and-braces basis.

Finally, it has struck me for some time as highly ironic in the post 9/11 era that there are no longer any immigration passport checks at UK or USA airport departures, seemingly for purely economic reasons! Hopefully these days are now numbered following this tragic incident.

I've rented motos dozens of time in Pattaya, Phuket, Samui, and Tao, and never once gave them my passport. Most didnt request it and if they did i said no. If they want a copy fine but never my passport.

The claim below that originally the two men traveling on fake passports were booked on separate flights, and not with Malaysia Air, kind of suggests this wasn't a terrorist thing, but rather, some other kind of shady enterprise -- at least in terms of the two guys flying on fake passports.

The tickets used by the fake passport carrying passengers aboard the missing Air Malaysia Flight 370 bought their tickets through a travel agency in Pattaya, Thailand, according to a report in a British newspaper.

The tickets were booked through an Iranian middleman known as “Mr Ali” a Thai travel agent told the Financial Times newspaper (registration required).

The newspaper quoted Benjaporn Krutnait, owner of the Grand Horizon travel agency in Pattaya, as saying the Iranian had asked her to book the two men to travel to Europe on March 1, specifying only that she find them cheap tickets.

She initially booked them on two separate flights -– one on Qatar Airways and another on Etihad airline –- but the tickets expired before she heard again from the Iranian, she said.

Thai police talk to a staff member of Grand Horizon Travel in Pattaya, Thailand, on Monday. Thai police said owners of the travel agency told them they booked two men aboard Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 who were later discovered to have been using stolen passports.

After he contacted her on Thursday, she rebooked the men on the missing Malaysia Airlines flight, though the Iranian again did not specify a flight. This time a friend of the Iranian paid in cash, she said. Benjaporn then arranged for a larger agency, Six Stars Travel, to issue the tickets, according to Thai police.

NBC News was not immediately able to contact Benjaporn to confirm the account.

The Financial Times said it was unable to reach “Mr Ali” via a cellphone number provided by Benjaporn.

Benjaporn said that she had known “Mr Ali” for about three years, when her periodically stayed in in Pattaya. The newspaper noted that there is no evidence that the Iranian knew the two men were traveling on stolen passports.

The regular traveler between Tehran and Pattaya had been using her agency for about three years, she said, although there is nothing to suggest that he knew the two men were imposters.

It doesn't matter whether it was Libya, Mossad, the CIA, or the Newton Poppleford Cricket Team that was responsible for Lockerbie, the point is that no-one claimed responsibility, so the lack of any claims in this case does not mean it is not terrorism.

My impression of the Austrians is that they have tendency to work in very professional way. They are likely co-operating with the investigation, but do not leak irrelevant information to the press. Therefore protecting the privacy of their citizens.

if it burst into flames at 35,000 travelling at 500 miles an hour the heat would all be directed backwards and it would just be a flash

of ignited jetfuel and the plane missing wings would drop like a stone and smash to bits when it hit land or sea

Interpol, FBI, Boeing or whoever are not being able to explain how the plane vanished for the simple reason that this is a rare case, we have been used to hear airplanes crashes during landing, take-off and taxi or on some altitudes where the plane has time to descend but in this particular case it was at 35k feet high cruising at 900+ km/h, the cabin pressurized at a height where the pressure inside exceeded largely outside. The stock of emergency oxygen supply should have been enough for 450 passengers, this could have contributed to boost fire/explosion, there is also that moving that fast the debris speed would have continued to travel to a certain speed spreading over the sea.

To make the system effective, the airline checking/ticketing systems need to be connected to the local government system, which then will do the queries to the Interpol database. These system integrations costs money and effort. There has to be procedures in cases that there is technical errors. etc. etc.

Government owned (ability to do the queries to the Interpol database) immigration is easy to circumvent by using two passports (one authentic, one fake), two onward tickets (first to be used, second will be no-go).
