You are stupid if you rent a house and buy furniture without ever having seen it.

What do you know? Nothing.

Thailand has a serious problem with burglaries. From the photos we see nothing whatsoever about security issues, and that is the first thing you look for when renting a house in Thailand.

You gonna spend 2500 dollar for second hand furniture even though you can get perfectly usable furniture for a fraction of that money here?

I have spent less than that, and my house is packet with antique furniture.

Sorry, mate, but if you don't wisen up very soon - you are in for a big fall. This country is full of scam artists specialised in naive and gullible newcomers such as you, looking for an escape, a new home in a place nicer than you came from.

Take it easy, for christ's sake.

Just buy yourself a "Lonely Planet" travel guide on Thailand, read that, pack a small backpack with whatever that book recommends you to, and fly over here. Then spend some time travelling around the country, and see if you like it here.

Before i forget - don't believe anything and anyone - don't believe a girl that tells you she loves you, don't believe anyone that tells you what a great business opportunity he has for you. Just observe and learn. And only then start making decisions that might affect your life.

If you go ahead with your plan, i can promise you that you will be screwing up big time here, one of so many before, and after you. You'll be just another figure in the statistic.

Amen that.

Not to mention the house might be in the middle of a shitty trashed place. Here zoning doesn't exist.

Read carefully the post above. You really don't need to find a place in advance, lots of places for rent here, BUT YOU HAVE TO SEE THEM PERSONALLY!

And really: $2500 is a lot of money here if spent wisely

Hey

Sunrocket will work fine in general, but they do suffer from poor on overseas lines, due to the way they facilitate these calls, plus you won't be able to send faxes via sunrocket, that that may not be a consideration for you.

Due to the problems with SunRockets international calling, I never used them. You may find that calling out from a Thai connection will give you 'quality' issues.

If you find this is a problem, you can simply get a vonage for your next trip out to thailand or get one of your family friends in the USA to send one to you.

Regards

Peter

bailey,

You're 23. Every 23 year old dislikes authority, and the cost of living. Moving here at your age and limited income will virtually assure that you will never get any further in your life than you are now. Since you don't know what you're going to do with either your ex or your child makes me realize that you've done virtually no planning. What's your backup plan? Your in-depth analysis includes posting pictures of a washing machine, and the price of furniture. Your two biggest concerns seem to be the internet and VOIP - not very mature. I wish you the best of luck but, without a major change in your perspective, you are going to be skinned alive and sent back to the US broke - emotionally and financially. Your first stop after you get to Thailand should be the US embassy, and you should check out its "emergency repatriation" procedures.

Actually things could go up or down for the OP

To the OP, imagine yourself waking up in the morning and being deaf.... Imagine not being able to communicate to anyone you see. Imagine the frustration you will be going through. Just try to get a glimpse of it. Because really your imagination will only give you a small slice of the frustration level you will experience.

Then imagine if all you can do and do well is make money over the net. Well you may just find yourself doing that A LOT in Thailand, because that is all you can do. From that point, you will either burn out, or start to slowly migrate out of your home office and learn to enjoy Thailand.

Not being able to communicate is your biggest biggest biggest barrier. Imagine if a Taxi driver just kicked you out of his cab, just for grins..... you would be in a world of hurt.

I am like a helpless one-year old here, without my wife by my side I am nothing. With her by my side, I have as much power and authority as a 6 year old. Communication is the key my friend, and until you or I can do that here, life is pretty harsh.

Good luck to you, financially I think you can do it. Psychologicaly, Hmmmm time will tell.

Do you have a tourist visa yet? If not, then just plan on a 30-day stay. Do you have a passport? If not, you won’t even get on the plane without one.

It’s not sensible to move into a place in a foreign country you’ve never been to or seen. Scrap that idea and go to Plan 2. Just plan to visit the country. Stay at hotels or guesthouses instead of thinking about a renting a townhouse. The advantage is that you won’t be tied down and can get up and go whenever you want. You really should take time to look around the country first to get a much better feel for it.

As I indicated, Chiang Mai is a great city. It’s also a large city. It’s hard to tell anything about the area from the photos. For all you know, it could be in an area that you really wouldn’t want to be in, or find yourself surrounded in an area at the far end of some long and winging soi where there only Thais are living there and don’t speak English. The locals there may be very nice people, but if you can’t understand what anyone is saying, and they don’t understand you, you might as well be on the other side of the galaxy. The rental agency or whoever is handling the townhouse, is out for one thing and one thing only… to get the place rented.

You mentioned you’re trying to make plans. Great! I would encourage you to do so. But it’s best to take it in little steps rather than plunge headlong into something major when you have no idea what you’re getting yourself into. Visit the country. Learn the language. Learn about the customs and the dos and don’ts. Have backup plans ready if needed. Meet with people who DO know about living in the country. They can be a helpful resource for you and most likely an easy way to meet both farangs and Thais.

Don’t bring a lot of luggage bulging with clothes, etc. They’re too much hassle. Bring one carry-on bag. You can get a backpack anywhere in Thailand.

If you want, get a copy of Lonely Planet’s Guide to Thailand. Any major bookstore or university bookstore should have it. It can give you some basic ideas, but don’t rely on price guides. By the time the latest editions are released, the prices in Thailand have most likely changed.

Getting acquainted with people is one of the best things you can do. Look around where you live. Are there any Thai restaurants or grocery stores? If there are, get to know them ask for advice or recommendations. The object is to prepare yourself with as much information well in advance, unless you intend to travel with one of those sightseeing tours.

I don’t think you’re prepared as much as you should be. It takes a bit more time than you can cram in a single month. Come over for a month, learn a few things, meet a few people, and have a good time. Don’t worry about taking on more than you’re actually ready for.

Haing a goal is a good thing to do. Reaching a goal is usually accomplished in stages by working toward it. It's almost never achieved right off the bat in any meaningful way as a result of an impulse.

I totally agree that you never ever rent a place without seeing it. That is totally insane. It's hard enough making a decision even upon seeing, but blind? I think that his comments about the $2500 for furniture was telling. Well they will throw in a couple of hundred bucks in rent and uts for his $2500. That's pretty funny though, $2500 or 2 years rents for some cheap old beat up furniture. great

second my father just bought a hosue in thailand and will be moving in 3 motnh.

3rd my grandmother is going to be moving in aug or sep until she can find a palce.

my cuz who know thai and have been there off and on and gone to school in Chiang Mai say that the area is very nice and they know exactly where it is.

so i thank you all for your help and i understand your concers. I can not lose. I go to thailand, have a room and give ti a try. If i dont like it i come home. no risk. no worries. I have coverd every aspect of this trip/ move twice over.
