These notes will be like gold dust.

I wonder how many will ACTUALLY be available to the general public and how many will be allocated to 'special deserving persons'?

We've already got 60 Baht notes, in the honour of our Kings 60th birthday. With only a million of the new currency available, their value will rocket. Anyone got 100 mill to spare?....you'll be quids in.

Update:

Thai people swarm at banks to receive commemorative banknotes

BANGKOK, June 9 (TNA) – A lot of Thai people have actively queued up to receive banknotes produced and issued to commemorate His Majesty King Bhumibhol Adulyadej’s 60 years on the throne for this year at commercial banks’ branches nationwide.

A TNA reporter said the people, most of them wear yellow T-shirts to celebrate the auspicious occasion, swarmed at the banks’ branches to wait to receive the banknotes they had subscribed in advance during June 1-8 when the banks opened for services at 8.30 hours.

Some banks, including the Government Savings Bank, gave the public an opportunity to buy the commemorative banknotes on Friday.

But the number offered for sale is limited to 5 banknotes per head to ensure they are distributed to the public as much as possible.

Panee Paovibul, one of the subscribers, said she is very happy to get the banknotes in a special occasion to celebrate the 60th anniversary of His Majesty the King’s accession to the throne.

“I feel very grateful and cheerful and want to say Long Live the King,” she said, adding that, “I will send the banknotes to my descendants overseas and hand them to my family members.”

The Bank of Thailand has issued 9,999,999 banknotes with a face value of 60 baht for sale to the public at 100 baht each to mark the historic commemorative event.

Special banknotes for the royal celebration quickly ran out in Trat

Banknotes, especially made for the 60th Anniversary of His Majesty the King’s Accession to the Throne, were all been exchanged in a very short period of time in Trat Province as the locals there had shown great interest in owning them.

Mr. Somboon Pattanadilok, the Manager of the Government Savings Bank in Trat Branch, said the exchange took place in the bank’s Trat and Chekasaming Branches. The bank's quota was 700 banknotes, and it took less than five minutes for them to be completely run out. As for other commercial banks in other areas, these special banknotes were also quickly depleted following the exchange.

Krung Thai Bank and Nakhon Luang Bank were each granted with 1,000 quotas of banknotes. However, they were not enough for public exchange, and people were only allowed to exchange for only a couple of these special banknotes.

This is a wonderful opportunity for the average Thai to own something to treasure.

Sadly with the limited number being issued, they will likely fall into the hands of greedy speculators instead of the hands of those that will really treasure them for what they represent.

I expect most poorer people would gladly forgo a meal or two to say that they have one of these commemorative banknotes. Too bad.

I have the 60th birthday note.

What is so magic about the number 60?

I won't get my pension until I am 65!! :o

I didn't think my 60th birthday was very special. It was the only b-day I ever got depressed. I could call myself Peter Pan and grow the blond ponytail, but I was undeniably OLD.

Blessings to our wonderful King.

Limited number??? 10 million 60 baht notes is a limited number? I don't think so.

Well, maybe they should print something like 99,000,000 and then there would be enough for everyone in the country. Plus they would make a lot of money for H.M. The King's projects.

They are a souvenir and not supposed to be used as every day currency. But as one can see on eBay they are asking for bids over $3.00 U.S. about double face value and that's just for starters.

Flood the market and bugger the speculators. Then every poor family in Thailand can have one or two to treasure.

Yes, but the Thai banks sell (sold) the 60 baht notes for 100 baht, making an asking price of $3.00 not all that much of a mark-up.

saw at least 20 tables set up tonight around the Grand Palace asking from 130 baht to 150 baht per note ... (framed etc were more ....)

if it saved me fron standing in line ... an extra 40 baht (roughly 1 USD) is well worth it :o
