Malaysia's Mahathir tells Muslims to build high-tech weapons for protection

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia -- Former Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad has urged Muslims to build their own high-tech weaponry to defend themselves against oppression, a news report said Thursday.

Muslims should learn to manufacture their own fighter aircraft, rockets, cannons and pistols instead of purchasing weapons created by others, Mahathir said in a speech Wednesday to a student community in northern Malaysia.

"To enhance our own defense capabilities, we must build our own brand of sophisticated weapons," Mahathir was quoted as saying by The Star newspaper. It's "not that we want to attack others, but we need to protect our masses of believers."

Mahathir, a respected figure in many Islamic nations, didn't specify what threats Muslims face, but said they were being oppressed worldwide because they couldn't defend themselves.

"Muslims are weak because we have not made the necessary preparation to defend and protect ourselves and the masses," Mahathir reportedly said. "We could not do it because we have not mastered the knowledge of science."

Mahathir's aides couldn't immediately be contacted to confirm the report.

Mahathir, who retired in October 2003 after leading this moderate, mostly Muslim Southeast Asian country for 22 years, has in the past often criticized what he called efforts by Western powers to suppress the Islamic world and developing nations. (AP)

When he's not inciting racial war, Mahathir is pursuing the big bucks to be made on the lecture circuit. He has visited Australian Universities to push his unique message since his reign as Prime Minister.

So what has Malaysia got to do with Thailand Mate.

Nothing

It's not that we don't appreciate the contribution, but there have been just too many non-Thai threads in here lately.
