The foreign banks came first: HSBC was first about 125 years ago. Stan Chart (or should I say an early incarnation Chartered Bank) was second after that.

First local commercial bank if I recall was Siam Commercial SCB.

Bank of Thailand (BOT) some info on its website re history. Also has a museum and a library.

Cheers

Fletch :)

According to this World Bank data under the "2009 year" which reflects the number of ATMs per 100K people by country, when doing a descending order sort Thailand is number 30 in the world. I used the 2009 year since quite a few major countries did not have data listed for years 2010-2012. For 2009 South Korea is #1, U.S. #4, Australia #5, U.K. #9. Seems European countries dominate the top portion of the list.

Wouldn't surprise me if SK is still No 1. The machines are everywhere and if you use a "foreign card" it gives you instructions in english or whatever to follow to get your cash.

The receipt is in SK WON but easy conversion to Thai Baht, same as the dollar 32/33 to one.

Draw 500,000 WON and the charge is about 6000 or 7000 WON. You do the arithmetic.

Here's a thought - a co-branded ATMachine : you walk up, choose what bank you want (atm can change colours etc) and insert your card.

One ATM for all banks .... ah forget it, let's aim a bit lower and settle for a mass transit system where one card can be used across both the bts and mrt.

The reason why Thailand has so many ATMs is the same reason why Thailand has so many bars and so many ladyboys: Taking advantage of the foreigner and finding ways to separate him from his money. Thailand ATMs have the highest fees in the world for foreigners. It's a huge money maker for the bank - charging you extremely high fees to access your OWN money!

Sorry. I cannot agree. Just open a Thai bank account and you will not have fees. Or, just continue your Thai bashing if that makes you happy.

Another pile of garbage. I can withdraw money from my Thai bank using my ATM card for free. If yours charges you then change bank.

You have to love the nonsense some posters on here come up with.

I have withdrawed in several countries, and it's a fact that one of the most expensive is Thailand, it's not fault of his bank, or mine... It's reality... This is true. If you two no like the way he talks about it, it's a different matter, i don't like also.

Not everyone can open a bank account in Thailand!

Nor do they need to if they are here for a short period of time!

Been here 5 months and tried to open a account with Kbank and was told

I needed to show a one year visa and a one year lease for my housing.

Perhaps this person does not have his own money in a Thai bank account!

It could very likely be in a foreign bank where he is accessing it through a ATM here

in Thailand!.

Maybe next time before you accuse someone of posting nonsense you should open

your mind up a bit as to what they are really talking about!

Was able to open a deposit account with Visa based ATM card in Krungthai Bank. Requirements... 500 baht deposit, passport and Thai address. I have 30 days visa and 30 days on the apartment lease. Have heard there is a concern about bank's having long lists of dormant accounts... I guess to avoid foreign card charges some visitors open an account for a month or so and just leave. Perhaps that was why I was asked whether I was opening " just for a short while".

I think the proliferation of ATMs here is due to the fact that debit cards are not accepted at most places (and lack of useable chip and pin - very few readers in use here). That means things are paid in cash (or DD of course for Thais household bills). ATMs here have a lot more functions than ones from home (my home country at least) - it is easy to deposit money into other accounts, pay for bills and even buy plane tickets etc - they are generally trusted where plastic often isn't.

Of course, that doesn't stop them making a good deal of extra money off of them - and I think is a major reason card readers are not so popular, because the banks here are happy with the status quo. While it is true that banks do not charge their own customers, there are no interbank deal here - like say the UK where any bank ATM will take any (UK) Bank card and not charge - using another bank will result in a 50 baht charge - some banks will even charge their own customers for using them in different regions (case in point my old Bangkok bases BKK bank card used to charge me 20 baht per transaction to use a Chiang Mai BKK Bank ATM! - this may have changed though). There is no reason to justify the 150/180 baht charge for foreign cards as they are checked before transaction and exchange costs are added already - so its a pure money making exercise and very expensive as far as such practises go elsewhere.

Private ATMs tend to charge everywhere in the world - that's how they make their money. In the UK this is a real con, in most motorway service stations, banks have removed their own ATMs and private ones charging up to 3 quid a go (or more possibly these days) are there instead. Only Nat West seems to buck this, and a hunt around can usually locate a Nat West ATM somewhere. Rumour is the service station owners charge a lot of rent for the ATMs which banks are not willing to pay for - Nat West still will, but often reduces to just one machine in a non-popular area.

I have been in & out of Thailand at least twice a year for 7 years now, normally for a couple of weeks at a time. I always just bring my Barclays debit card and draw cash as needed; the charges are so little that they are not worth worrying about. You should remember that a Thai in the UK would have to pay UK banking charges, as would be the case in most countries. If you think you're being used as a walking ATM, you probably have only yourself to blame, (unless you're regularly being mugged). Spend less time in bars and stay away from the ladyboys!

Then if thats the case it will attract charges, I should add its not difficult to open an account here there have been numerous posts on the subject.

In the UK the 'link sytem' often charges other cards and very often the Banks will tell you any charge is levied by Visa or Mastercard

Indeed another pile of garbage, that's your post, and clearly made by someone who never has been further than Pattaya Sukhumvit.

If I want to withdraw from an ATM from the Thai bank where I have my account, outside the district where I opened the account, I"ll have to pay a fee for it. For a Pattaya account that can be as nearby as Sattahip. The same is applicable when I withdraw from the counter in that bank.

If I want to deposit money in my own Pattaya based account, using the branch in Sattahip, I'll have to pay a fee.

If I want to transfer money from my account to another customer with the same bank but located in another district, I'll have to pay a fee.

Please enlighten us which bank doesn't charge those fees.

Edit : I forgot, even for my ATM card I have to pay a fee.

I agree with what you are saying Stoli, but you have to admit, the Thai bank system of charging 150 or is it 180? with a foreign ATM card is pure greed, and way out of order.

I have two Thai bank accounts. However, what I was referring to is the vast majority of foreigners who visit Thailand but don't live here, and they don't even know it's possible to open a bank account here as a non-resident. Perhaps I should have worded my post a bit clearer by using "tourist" instead of "foreigner", then maybe, just maybe, your thick Stoli-addled skull would have realised that I was not talking about the permanently resident expat. Even so, I know for a fact that there are quite a few expats who don't even have a bank account here! Even if you do open one, if you go outside the immediate area of your home branch, you'll still be slapped with fees!!

Anyone can open a bank account. Since you have only been here 5 months you have some things to learn. Just go to another bank / branch.

You might need to hit 3-4 banks / branches before you find one that will open account. As for the fees if you are using an overseas debit card

then the fee is for using the local bank ATM machine and your bank charges a fee too.

@ Thainess If you are upset with the ATM fee then why are you talking about

bars / ladyboys etc as nothing to do with the ATM fee, you are just Thai bashing at this point. Just to let you know there are far more Thai bars than

expat bars in Thailand. The locals beat the ex-pats at drinking hand down.

If you cant afford the ATM fee get travelers checks very simple. Planning is everything.

Prior to moving to Thailand when I traveled to Thailand I always got travel checks. You get a better rate when

exchanged. It's a win win.

Use a ATM at a casino in the USA the fee is $13, far more than anything in Thailand. I have had some ATM's that are private owned in the USA charge $5-6 fee.

It's a choice you don't like the fee don't use the ATM. It's their ATM you are using.
