BANGKOK, March 27 - Thailand's anti-government People's Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC) today turned down the idea of the Shinawatra family taking a break from the country's politics in an exchange with the election, while Thaksin Shinawatra's legal advisor today rejected the report on the controversial proposal.

PDRC leader Suthep Thaugsuban made his remarks following reports that ousted former premier Thaksin had proposed to his political opponents to allow the election to be held and that his younger sister, Yingluck and all the Shinawatra family would stay away from politics for one year in return.

Noppadon Pattama, Mr Thaksin's legal advisor, however dismissed the report today, saying he asked the ex-premier and found that it was untrue. The ruling Pheu Thai Party, he said, has never considered this solution.

He said final decision on who will be the number one candidate on the Pheu Thai party-list depends on the decision of the party executives. It is still too early to decide on the issue , he said, as no royal decree on a new election has been issued.

As Mr Noppadon rejected the claim, the protest leader stood firm that he will not talk or accept any conditions from Mr Thaksin.

Mr Suthep said that the PDRC will move on its reform before the election campaign.

Another protest leader, Thaworn Senneam, said the protesters did not object to the whole family but they do not want any political party which serves capitalism.

He emphasised that political reform is needed to prevent repeated problematic system. Once the reform is complete, anyone in the Shinawatra family is welcome to contest the election. (MCOT online news)

Anybody can have floated this "rumor" including Kuhn Suthep himself...

Nothing new here just another headline Suthep refuses this rumor Suthep refuses that rumor..... and there is nothing that indicates Thaksin is "up against a wall" anywhere just Suthep talking to a ghost...

"they do not want any political party which serves capitalism."

This is the most inane statement by Suthep/PDRC that I have seen yet. Almost every governmental system on earth today has embraced capitalism as their economic base regardless of their form of government, ie., democracy, "modern" Communism, Olioarchy, tolaitarian, monarchy. Capitalism serves government, not the reverse. This is particularly true for resource rich countries who rely on a global market for their goods. The few excetions like Cuba and North Korea are notable for their closed societies, elitist class, state ownership for production of goods, and lack of significant domestic and international consumption that can eshew a capitalistic system by national pricing controls. Venzuela's shift towards a more "retro" form of communism is going to extremes to control prices of basic consumer products like toilet paper with a resulting shortage because of hoarding.

It is the type of government that will control the efficiency of capitalism. If it is Suthep's plan to completely deviate from capitalism because he views it as a populist economic system that he abhors (irrationally because he only relates populist policies to Thaksin who is "bad"), his reforms for the country will within a few short years crash the Thailand economy by making Thailand's exports too costly and cripple domestic consumption through high inflation.

Reports that Thaksin asked PM to take a break denied

The Nation

BANGKOK: -- Noppadon Pattama, former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra's legal adviser, has dismissed as groundless reports that Thaksin ordered caretaker PM Yingluck Shinawatra to take a year's break from politics to pave the way for political negotiations.

Noppadon said he had checked with Thaksin, who denied the reports. The adviser said there had not yet been any discussion over whether Yingluck would run in the new election or be fielded as Pheu Thai's No 1 party-list candidate. It is not the time to discuss the matter, because a Royal Decree to call a general election has not been promulgated, he said.

Noppadon said Yingluck had not done anything wrong. She was pressured into dissolving the House of Representatives but has vowed to continue working as caretaker PM to protect the democratic system, he said.

Sources said after the Constitutional Court nullified the February 2 election - and in light of the possibility that Yingluck could be indicted by the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) over her alleged failure to stop losses from the rice-pledging scheme - Thaksin had decided that she should take a step back and not contest the election as the party's top candidate.

The sources said caretaker Deputy PM Phongthep Thepkanjana would take the No 1 spot instead, and that Thaksin's sister Yaowapa Wongsawat would not contest the election either.

This plan was reportedly intended to dispel criticism that the country is under the domination of the Shinawatra family.

The reported move to take a step back was also seen as an attempt to counter any possible coup.

Another reason given was to push for national reform to be achieved in one year.

Yingluck will not resign as PM until a new government is formed, according to the sources. She would hold closed-door meetings with representatives of her political rivals and the Election Commission, and would expect to reach an agreement before the NACC's decision on the rice-pledging scheme.

What an idiotic thing to say. So which philosophy is he going to follow?

communism?

Easy call for Thakisn:

1. Keep YL or another family member as number 1 puppet

2. Replace with non-family member but totally controlled and trusted puppet.

He ain't gonna give up power and all that wealth generation - that just ain't an option. Control overtly or covertly?

His egotistical arrogance and promotion of the Shin family name, with his distrust of non-family members makes choice 2 harder.

To be fair it must be difficult to take a break from Thai politics when the family's head owns and controls the ruling party and decides government policy, his sister is the Prime Minister and Defence Minister and his cousin is the Foreign Minister.

If the Shinawats took a break from politics there's be hardly anyone left to run the country.

I believe that in line with previous answers k. Thaksin may have replied "who am I to say such?"

Anyway I completely accept as true the statement of Noppadon with "The ruling Pheu Thai Party, he said, has never considered this solution." The Pheu Thai party only acts, Thaksin does the thinking rolleyes.gif

Considering Thaksin apparently dropped out of Thai politics many years ago (according to him... on more than 1 occasion) I cannot see why anyone would believe a Shinawatra that says they are taking a break from politics.
