Hunt for Iranian assassin

SADAO: -- Immigration police at Sadao border pass in Songkhla are on the lookout for a suspected Iranian assassin on the run after killing a Dubai businessman.

Dubai asked Thai authorities to locate suspect Rahmat Asadi, 32, who entered Thailand on Wednesday. Police suspect he may try to escape to Malaysia in order to return to Iran.

Songkhla Immigration Police, led by Colonel Seksan Ong-ard, have been on the lookout for the suspect around the clock. Asadi is believed to be an expert killer and allegedly has ties to terrorist groups.

Southern border checkpoints in Songkhla, Narathiwat and Yala have been given his picture.

Five die on way to wedding

RATCHABURI: -- Five people were killed while travelling to attend a wedding ceremony in Ratchaburi's Photharam district yesterday morning.

Following the accident report at 6.30am, Pol Lieutenant Sayan Tumrawat of Photharam Police inspected the scene on Phetkasem Road in tambon Don Sai and found an overturned car in a roadside ditch.

After pulling the car from the ditch, he found the bodies of a Thai man and four women inside, covered in petrol.

The medical examiner at the scene reported that the victims might have die from choking on the petrol, which came from the car.

Police learned the victims were on their way to attend a relative's wedding in downtown Ratchaburi City but the driver lost control of the car.

BANGKOK: -- Election officials in some southern provinces expressed concern yesterday that the ongoing anti-government rally may affect the voter turnout for today's half-Senate poll, although some provinces expected a high turnout of up to 80 per cent in their constituencies.

100,000 police deployed to guard polling stations of senatorial election nationwide

BANGKOK: -- Deputy Police Commissioner General Pol Lt Gen Aree Onchit said about 100,000 policemen were deployed to keep security at polling stations around the country for the senatorial election Sunday.

Aree said the situation so far is peaceful with no sign of violence.

Chiang Mai reports lively Senate election

CHIANG MAI, 30 March 2014 (NNT) - Voters have continuously gone to vote in the Senate election in Chiang Mai province since 8 AM on Sunday. No problems have been reported so far.

At the seventh and eighth polling stations in Tambon Chang Phuag, there were some voters waiting to cast their ballots before the opening time. Deputy Governor of Chiang Mai Chana Phaengpiboon already voted at the eighth polling station.

The province's election has been reportedly lively, especially in Mueang district. There are 13 candidates contesting the Senate poll in Chiang Mai this year.

Senate poll in Nakhon Si Thammarat peaceful

BANGKOK, 30 March 2014 (NNT) - The Sunday Senate election in Nakhon Si Thammarat has proceeded smoothly. The provincial Election Commission (EC) has set a voter turnout target of 65%.

All 1,980 polling stations in the southern province of Nakhon Si Thammarat have been open since 8 AM on Sunday. At 9 AM, Deputy Governor Thitawat Chaowalit cast his vote at the third polling station at Kanlayanee Si Thammarat school in Mueang district. The atmosphere there was not buzzing with voters.

At the 10th polling station in Chian Yai district, the election has also been quiet so far. 432 voters are eligible to cast ballots here.

Eight candidates run for the Senate in Nakhon Si Thammarat this year. Most of them are retired civil servants.
