Second weekend with total alcohol ban in Thailand

Recommended Posts

We just have house parties now, these days are becoming ludicrously frequent...

I find the sanctimonious ramblings gushing out here incredible.

Anyone who likes a drink nor appreciates random illogical curbs on their weekends is now a "Thai knocker" in the eyes of the "I'm Thaier than you" brigade. Frankly no one really cares if you drink or not but some of you clearly need to get down from those high horses...

And if they are not happy with the election results, it will be the same thing next month.

I find it strange that people can't have a day without alcohol. On the other hand for some the weekend is the time to party and these things always occur in the weekend. But if you really can't go a day without a beer then you got a problem.

If its just that you don't like it that now 2 weekend you could not have fun.. different thing.

As for not drinking and not having and connecting that to a wife telling you what to do.. crazy remark.. maybe for some but many don't or drink little out of health reasons (wish i remembered that last Friday).

But as I can choose when i want to drink or not this really does not influence me.. im not limited to weekends. If i was and if i liked drinking i would be pissed. If I was pissed off because i could not drink one out of 7 days.. id look in the mirror and find help.

many countries in development believe the same f*** way. Anyway corruption is all over with alcohol or without. Luck they did't mention nothing about weed! giggle.gif

Don't care, don't like alcohol and I think it turns people into instant morons.

If alcohol was banned forever I wouldn't care one bit.

Alcohol deprives one of equal treatment.

Drunk or just a glass or 2 the smell alcohol in Thailand, triggers alarmbells ringing and people won't take you serious.

So if you take a beer in the morning it effectively cuts you of from any serious contact in the daytime.

Cambodia is obviously smart in allowing tourist to have a beer or wine while they are on vacation and elections have nothing to do with them. A smart government would apply the law to THAIS only and have the police patrol the bars looking for Thais who are drinking and enforce their law that way.

Its especially stupid here in thailand because every time they have an election its voided by the courts and have to start over yet again and have yet more elections and more closings of bars it think its been like 6 days so far in 2 months maybe more

ALL in ALL fkin ridiculous but then again not much makes sense in this country.

When will Thais learn to run their economy with some common sense! (Its not very common). It makes no difference to farangs whether they have elections or buddha day or whatever other stupid reasons they seem to come up with.

They have a struggling economy thanks to their reckless behaviour on the political front. They rely heavily on tourism but seem so blasee about it all.

Mostly a publicity stunt. Many tourist hotels and bars still selling. Not all. And the smart guys just stock, lock the doors, etc...

Haha...the smaller mom and pop stores outside town just shrug and sell anyways.

Drinking alcohol is a matter of choice. Taking away that choice through an alcohol ban, ostensibly because an election is taking place, shows a lack of trust in people to make the right choice appropriate to the conditions.

An election is not a good reason to ban alcohol, neither is the King's birthday, which some wise sage thought was a good idea some years ago. And in fact, there is no occasion when an alcohol ban could actually serve its purpose, essentially because anyone with any 'nouse' would have filled their fridge up with drinks in advance of the ban.

Furthermore, a non-drinker has no right to get on his high horse and try to tell drinkers that they have made the wrong choice, in the same way that we do not generally find drinkers telling non-drinkers that they have made the wrong choice...!!

In all 15yrs of running a bar here we have been 'penalised' by draconian laws laid down so tourists-bars stay dry over the election period..while police-owned places serve as normal.

This is the same deal with the ever-increasing venues that Bangkok Hi-So's frequent..They are allowed to keep on drinking, but farang, be it their holiday-period or not will have to yeild..TiT eh?

(Then when the TAT wonders why tourists opt not to return the following year..?/)

Some people, who are not drinking, are obviously very judgmental... No offence..

I feel for the guys who like to have a quite drink ,and they take that away from you because of elections. I peronally dont drink(maybe a bottle every 6 months) so it does not worry me.But I think it is wrong for the guys who want that quite drink. So on election day the goverment members dont have a drink?

The worst ones are alcoholics, who think since they have a problem, everybody must have a problem. Same with ex-smokers, etc.

Nobody says they cannot drink, they just cannot drink in a bar.

As a beer swallower myself, I welcome the temporary absence of what is laughably called "beer" (which is offered under names like Singh, Heineken, Leo and Chang, but which really should be called only one name, something like Urinary Draft), and I wend my way to the supermarket and stock up on some of those hideously expensive but glorious tasting Belgian, German and Czech beers.

Just want to add that I usually don`t have a drink in the morning, I drink

when there is a party or if I go out with friends. I didn`t have a single beer

in January, but if I feel like it, I can stay out for 3 days drinking like an "idiot".

But I`m not that kind of drunk that picks fights and make trouble. My worst

problem when drinking is all the appointments and stuff I promise to do

the next day, when I`m so sick I cannot even get out of my bed to get some

water to stop my terrible thirst :)

My point was that if somebody have a single drink in the morning to function,

or overcome the scare of being sosial, thats fine by me, and If you are sober

yourself, you should be able to see if the person is drunk and talking BS, or

just smell alcohol.

There is just one thing I don`t respect, and that is people who judge other

people, There`s something wrong with all of us! Nobody has the right to say

that the level of "wrong" their at, is the standard for acceptable...

Take a pill and relax, at least it doesn`t smell ;)

Peace :D

I wouldn't care one bit if you were banned forever.

Btw, congrats on winning the dullest post on TV award. You sound a barrel of laughs, I bet your other half is just chuffed to bits.

Deaw, just because you don't have any fun

WHERE ON EARTH DID I SAY THAT?

I just don't need some downer to allow me to have fun. If other people do, I feel kinda bad for them, really.

I have as much fun as the next guy, I just don't need some alcoholic beverage to do so.....if some people do, talk about a crutch.

I have fun reading a book, I have fun watching birds (the feathered kind), I have fun having a nice meal, and I have fun drinking a cold beer. All crutches? All to be banned?

Oh come on where is your self control? You'll still have at least 265 days to drink this year.

Understand that. I really do, but aren't you taking the third argument and opening up conversation into issues which do not revolve around those who are banning the ones who drink, and those who dislike the ones banning the drink from those who wish to drink?

Isn't it a bit like me registering on wwX.allah-is-great.com and regaling everyone with my views on Christmas?

I have as much fun at Christmas time as the next guy. I just don't need some Muslim guidelines to do so... if some people do... talk about a crutch.

Point?

Live and let live. It's not about you and what "does it" for you.

People spend all their time on Thai visa bitching about being discriminated against, yet here someone is arguing for it. I guess when there is self interest involved, it become okay...

Yeah!

Isn't life grand!

Dianne Feinstein said it was not a problem for the C!A to spy on Americans, until they spied on her, and then she changed her tune.

It happens at all levels of life, mate, and I kind of suspect that you are not immune to this.

I am as guilty as hell, but I am endeavoring to respect what others are upset about, no matter how much I dislike the taste of it. And it tastes like Lao!

(Homer Simspon), "Mmmmmm.... beer Lao! GGgggggggggg!".

i went to big C and they passed my 2 beers through the registers... (11-2pm ok curfew)...so i don't know what's going on... hmm i guess everyone is so stuck to the elections they forgot? tongue.png

I went to Tesco mini mart and asked the head cashier if I could purchase four beers. She said no. As I was waiting in the queue to purchase my other sundries, and rather attractive and well-dressed Thai lady (in front of me) put down four (4) "four-packs" of beer Lao in front of the trainee and was immediately rung up.

As the rather attractive and well-dressed Thai lady was about to pay the trainee, I piped up and caught the attention of the head cashier.

Believe it or not, ten minutes transpired before the Tesco mini mart personnel decided that it was inappropriate to tell a Thai that they could not buy any beer, whilst a "denied" foreigner was looking on. The look that the rather attractive and well-dressed Thai lady gave me would have corroded the paint off of a new automobile.

Give me a alcohol ban any day. I now do not go to any main street outlets for alcohol if I decide that I want a taste of the spirits.

I go, rather instead, to the sundry mom and pop outlets who are more than happy to accommodate and facilitate my earthly and peaceful desires. In this respect, the poor and impoverished may be ignorant on many issues, but on this one issue they are nobody's fools.

I never once saw Mike and/or Caroll Brady imbibe on any episode of the Brady Bunch, yet I am certain that they respected their neighbors, who did.

I don't drink enough to concern myself with it, ludicrous though it is.

And anyone who thinks they will be in desperate need of a drink can always buy the day before and drink at home. Or find the places that are still serving.

I always have a bottle of Southern Comfort in my fridge, and all this discussions

about drinking made me open it and have a drink. Now it`s time to hit the beach

and be sosial and discuss this thread face to face :D

Enjoy Thailand everybody ;)

If you cannot get a beer today you are, I hate to say it an idiot. If you require entertainment with your beer maybe you will have a problem, but if you think you cannot carry on as usual you must live in a very strange world.

I beleive its a bad decision for tourists. Many come for beer and partying obviously.

Us expats can no doubt go a day without beer. Well most of us.

I just think if someone comes to Thailand for a couple of weeks holiday (party time holiday) its a shame they miss a couple of days due to this law.

Then again I live in the sticks and all my bars (village shops) were readily selling beer around 500 meters from the polling station. The lads who were officials at the vote even came for a beer after voting was complete.
