Im currently here on a non b visa and have a visa stamp that will expire in oct. this year. However I am leaving my job and my employers will be cancelling my work permit on the 31st of this month.

My problem is I wont be ready to leave Thailand untill the 14th of April. What options do I have?

Technically when my permit is cancelled it invalidates my visa but ill still have the stamp in my passport will they check this when I fly out of BKK?

Iif so what is my best option? If possible Id like to avoid the time and expense of a border run.

Would I be able to get a 14day extension on my visa even though im no longer employed in Thailand, could I for example extend my current non b for 14 days as a tourist?

If you really do have a "visa" then it will remain valid.

If ,however your passport contains an "extension of stay based on work" it will become invalid on the day the job ends. All immigration can do is provide (On application) 7 days for you to pack up.

The only option would to be to leave Thailand and return on a visa exempt entry or obtain a tourist visa from a nearby Consulate/Embassy,

Thanks thats helpful looking at my passport I did enter on a non b but that has a line through it and the bit that says oct. this year is a "extension of stay based on work" so it will become invalid.

Now Ive left the country before with the same"extension of stay based on work" and no one has asked to see my permit. I know you cant advise anyone to break the rules but what do you think the chances are of anyone noticing that I should have left on the 1st if I leave via plane in BKK as my passport says and will say when I leave that im ok to stay till oct. its only if they check with the dept. of emploment that anything will show up.

If you left the country whilst on a extension of stay you must have had a re-entry permit or you would not have been allowed back other than on an visa exempt basis.

Your employer could notify immigration of your job ending .

Best play straight as us cricketers say !

Employers can notice the Immigration office when your job ends but they do not have any power to cancel your extension.

They can not go to the immigration to cancel your extension of stay which you should do on the day the WP is cancelled.

Lot of employers threatening their people with cancelling their extension of stay when there is a working problem but they don't have any power over your extension of stay.

no, no re-entry permit but I did buy a new non b (I was switching employers) so thats probably why there was no problem.

merjin do you know what would happen if I didnt go to immigration when my WP is cancelled and just left the country on the 14th?

The thing im not sure about is will customs even notice as when my permit is canceled at dept. of employment they dont touch my passport. so ill still have the extension of stay stamp in it.

You could leave on the 14th and take the chance the your extension has not been canceled. Just be sure you have about 7000 baht to pay an overstay if it has been canceled..

The labor office computer is not linked to the immigration computer system

So if you don't inform the immigration department your visa or extension of stay will not be cancelled.

Theoretically you can continue using your visa or extension of stay until it runs out but i would not do this as this could cause problems when or if you apply for a new WP in the future.

I did not say the computer systems were linked and certainly did not imply it.

There have been reports that I can recall of immigration being notified that a person is no longer working and the extension was canceled in their computer records. I am just warning that it could happen and to have the money available.

I know that you not say that and i apologize if i gave that impression. ( My comment was more for TrogUK )

But I don't know how the extension can be cancelled without the knowledge of the holder.

Only the extension holder can request the extension to be cancelled. ( in normal situations that is )

Off course warning that somebody has to follow the required procedure is always good.

The extension can be canceled by immigration if they are informed a person is no longer working and is no longer eligible for it. This has happened in the past because a work permit office was faxing cancellations to immigration.

This is first time i hear this.

Good to know that this is possible.

thanks for the info guys, confiming what I suspected. I could probably get away with it but it would be a gamble and yes I would need to have the overstay money just in case.

Nothing to do with Customs. It's Immigrations who deal with extensions of stay, etc.
