of calling an unknown telephone number (International)?

The story...

Recently I received a SMS from an unknown foreign number just saying "call me now plz"

a wrong number???

Posted

It could be a cry for help....someone locked up in a basement for 15 years, chained to the walls, their captors phone slipped out of his pocket after serving the evenings slosh.....the captor dialed whatever numbers they could.....call it.

I am still not convinced - expense is my least worry.

Edit.

I was tempted to call thinking it might be a call for help.

But... what are the risks?

Who do you know that knows your number and is likely to make an overseas call to you? What country does the call originate in? Do you know anyone who's likely to get into trouble in that country? If not then why are you thinking of calling a stranger?

The cops who're looking for you will dentally know where you are and track you.Or they might want to remind you to pay for your child support.

What a strange question you're asking here. A good excuse for you would be the 1st of April.

Really, I am surprised at the intellectual standards of replies a person receives here.

I don't care a F*** about the SMS. But my interest and why I posed this question here is...

That with such a large number of members I could get different intelligent views of what a phone call to an unknown number could expose oneself to any risk.

Of course... an intelligent reply to this type of question could ONLY be expected from some one who REALLY is educated in technology...

I understand...

April 1st is not considered as I received this SMS on 18 March 2014 - today I was cleaning my phone up and saw this.

By the way... if ANY cop is looking for me, hope it is a SHE.

No, I don't know anyone from that country.

If not then why are you thinking of calling a stranger? - I am just thinking <deleted> someone want to spend money on sending a SMS like that.

Maybe I should post that number here for the "intelligent" to investigate???

I get spates of random calls and just ignore them. Most of the time they allow the phone to ring once then hang up before I can answer. Most of the calls lately are from +221 (senegal). I've also had SMS's from middle eastern or african countries. I never return the call or SMS.

He's a couple of scenarios

The caller/sms sender got the number wrong

As mentioned earlier, your return call could set off a bomb. This method has also been used in the South of Thailand.

The caller/sender will give you a sob story and ask you to send money.

The number they called you from is a premium number and you end up paying a fortune in call fees when returning the call. (This was a common scam from Egyptian and Turkish numbers a couple of years ago)

Why didn't you say you wanted intelligent answers in the OP...we would have directed you to the serious answer forum.

Your fault.

Thank you a million times.

This is the type of answer I expected.

I asked you a perfectly good set of questions that you might have wanted to think about before deciding to call or not. If you choose to be insulting then up to you.

Hey, that's my number. Why haven't you called me back yet?

Just out of interest, do you also deliberate whether to reply to emails with a similar subject line?

If you're considering calling the number, what are you hoping may be the benefit of doing so? Possible booty call perhaps...? Hehehe... Saving a damsel in distress maybe? That's what they count on, vanity and a desire to think we're special somehow... It'll be a premium rate line, that's all.

I don't agree with the bomb theory. Who would go to all the trouble of setting up a bomb anywhere only to allow it's detonation or otherwise to be decided by whether some randomer will respond to an anonymous text. Although... it could be the makings of a good new gameshow...

@susento - I very much appreciate your genuine questions - never meant to insult you in the slightest manner.

I apologize for not been clear.

If you're considering calling the number, what are you hoping may be the benefit of doing so? - No again. Never planned to strike it rich instantly.

This was the first time I received a SMS like this - hence it must be my naivety that prompted me to get more information!

Sure the SMS could be a scam...or not. Could simply be a wrong number. Just google a little and you will find info like at this webpage. Then make your decision. But I expect if some one really wanted to talk to your they would call you....if you didn't answer then they would try again later. I get occassional SMSs and phone calls that are just people fat fingering the number entry...but for numbers/SMSs I don't recognize I usually don't call them back and definitely not to an international number...figure if it's important they call me back.

'Sms tunisia scam' would likely have resulted in more than the 'unintelligent' answers here.
