george
Suvarnabhumi Airport to waive landing fees to attract budget carriers BANGKOK: -- Suvarnabhumi Airport to waive landing fees to attract low-cost airlines at the new international airport due to open in this late September, officials said Tuesday. Civil aviation head, Chaisak Angsuwan said budget carriers could begin test runs flights with some passengers at the new Suvarnabhumi Airport as early as this July ahead of the late September official opening. Local aviation authorities certified the airport as ready for commercial traffic on May 25, but major international carriers said they would need at least six months to complete the transfer from the existing Don Muang airport. Authorities hoped budget carriers can move more quickly as they tend to be smaller companies with fewer logistical hurdles, Chaisak said. The government wants all commercial flights using Suvarnabhumi Airport, while the old Don Muang Airport will be used for military and charter services. --The nation 2006-0606

britmaveric
Hmmm capacity problems - how on earth can they let the cheapies in the new airport? Bit daft me thinks.
Maejo Man
Hmmm capacity problems - how on earth can they let the cheapies in the new airport? Bit daft me thinks. I think the idea Brit, is to get them in as early as July for two reasons. One, it's a great face saving excerise, and two it sorts out all the possible problems before the major airlines start operating there. Maybe they are not quiter as silly as we think. They are still awaiting international certification, so I'm not quite sure how they will get round that one.........
Phil Conners
Yeah it's very nice that the local aviation authorities certified the airport as ready for commercial traffic but until IATA confirms the runway is safe I don't think any carrier is going to take them up on the offer. cdnvic
No cracks in the secrecy, only in the runway That's the plan. Send a cheapie in first. Every major carrier will have a sacrificial low cost carrier land ahead of them. If the cheap seats 737 survives, the VIPs flying business class in the 777 behind them will be safe to land. cv
Chang_paarp
I was under the delusion that the new airport was for the top end of the market and they were going to keep Don muang for the low cost airlines. Leaving a pleasant little adventure for those who need to change teminals. Did this get changed some time?

At one point, the powers-that-be were talking running about all domestic operations out of Don Muang.

Nah, they'd wanna use something that they'd be sure would make it all the way to the airport. cv

cclub75
The government wants all commercial flights using Suvarnabhumi Airport, while the old Don Muang Airport will be used for military and charter services. 2 months ago, the "idea" was to let Don Muang for the low cost airlines, because of "capacity problems". But mai pen rai, it's another proof of the fantastic ability of thai authorities to "adapt to circumstances". I say : respect. And you are probably right : eventually it will be a face-saving exercice. A few Phuket Air like airlines will go quickly to the new airport, so the government will be able to say : "you seeeeeeeee, the airport is indeed open". Word is, as I've got it, that Air Asia, and whats the other "No Nokkers" are going to load up a plane each with wheelchair passangers to make it look good and fly them into the new Suvarnabhumi. What they are trying to determine at this point is just how far into it. Doncha think if the cheapies [cheap charlie bast*rds] are flying with reduced or no landing fees they should be able to carry wheelchair passangers. Until they accept wheelchair passengers, I will continue to promote my boycott. gonzo
