Two troops shot, injured allegedly by STR guards

BANGKOK: -- Two troops in civilian clothes were shot and severely injured allegedly by security guards of the Students and People Network for Thailand's Reform late Saturday night, an Army officer said.

The shooting happened at 10 pm while five troops in civilian clothes were patrolling on Soi Likhit behind Benjamabophit Temple near the STR rally site.

The two injured troops were identified as Private 1st Class Prasert Chansri and Sgt Maj 1st Class Chaiyunt Lekpong.

Sgt Maj 1st Class Pairote Kuntha told police that he and four other troops in civilian clothes were patrolling the area when they were fired at by assault rifles.

Pairote said the fire was made from the bunker of the STR and the motorcycle of the two injured troops fell down. Then, two STR guards ran toward them and point their .38 revolvers at the two troops' head. Pairote said he had to stop to help his friends and told the guards that they were Army troops

Hopefully whoever shot the soldiers will be held fully accountable for their actions.

I in no way want to excuse this despicable shooting but a question that has to be asked is why were soldiers on patrol in civilian clothes?

"watermelon" soldiers? I wonder if they were armed also?

Well, at least the shooters were nice enough, to not kill them, because they were soldiers!

So they were fired upon by an assault rifle they they and when the bike fell over the shooters had 38 pistols? Not in Uniform why? This just get crazier by the day.

Because if the soldiers were armed, then when people fire at them and try and kill them and they shoot back in defence of their lives. the soldiers and the current PM will be held responsible for the massacre of innocent protestors. So, soldiers put on duty without guns it is sad.png

All of these ad hoc guards regardless of 'flavour' should be subject to swift inspection and any who are caught with any weapon which they are not legally entitled to carry should be jailed for a long time. After the first hundred guards are banged up for 5 years each you would find the frequency of illegal possession of fire arms amongst the guards would drop considerably.

Soliders with arms, how could that happen? Shows how silly this statement is.

Given that pretty every report of these "clashes" immediately state what weapons were being carried, I was curious why not in this case.

If they were in civilian clothes were they carrying or not?

Not silly at all, M B. None of the soldiers at checkpoints around Lumpini and NACC have been armed. Even when they joint patrol with police, they are unarmed. This is not a war or war zone and these are the first soldiers shot as far as I have read. It's going to take decades to get the stink of civilian deaths from 2010 off the army and they are taking no chances of a repeat in 2014.

The unarmed soldiers are dressing in full uniform and not hiding from the public, but the armed soldiers dress in incognito. What is happening??? blink.png

They put down their "assault rifles" and stopped firing when they were "informed" that they were army troops in plain clothes. Some place, Thailand.

Two thoughts on this incident

If these soldiers were on duty in some capacity to catch assailants attacking the STR location then they should have made their presence know before hand especially since they were in plain clothes

Tension at these sites are high right now considering the activities in the city at the moment, the STR have every right to protect themselves against lethal attack since the police are reluctant to do so

It is also not beyond belief that the soldiers were in fact about to attack the STR site

Either way I would be inclined to call this an unfortunate incident give the information from the OP

Dumb....should be arrested.

Arrested? Why?

Any wrongdoings by the Suthepistas is always "alleged".

The so called "students" and all the PDRC have the full faith and backing of the Bangkok Ammart and the Army.

The TV yellow coup-mongers trying to play this down. Can you imagine the condemnation if a red was implicated? Yellow double standards alive and well on TV

The article does NOT say the Plain Clothes Troops" were armed with weapons.

Guess some TV posters were asleep during their school days Reading Comprehension Courses.

Probably undercover ,I had a friend who did that with a bullet proof vest under he's tee shirt down south a few years back.

Oh no, it shows your double standards and hypocrisy. Your lot has been boring people on this forum to death with numerous posts about Thai army and protesters working together to bring about the coup. I guess you were just dead wrong as in most of your one sided assertions.

Being a red supporter you should know as most red supporters who post on here are very adept at applying double standards.

Two individuals in civilian clothing riding a motorbike happened to be shot by a faction of the PDRC firing assault weapons. The fact that the wounded happened to be soldiers would appear incidental to the context of the story. This was not some inane arcade game where points are lost for reflexively gunning down the wrong character.

Should we look up your condemnation of the Red Shirts when they shot at two soldiers near the NACC shortly before they were found in possesion of war weapons?

Or your condemnation of the shooting of a SRT bus killing one by the same group of Red Shirts?

This seems to be a case of itchy finger imbeciles in charge of security, but considering that they have been shot at with some regularity and complete impunity before there's no wonder they'll shoot first and ask questions later.

Staggering hypocrisy from the Suthep mob and the acolyte supporters on this forum: they beg for support / security from the army and when it is offered, apparently shoot them as they please. These scumbag guards need to be sent to prison for a very long time. No one is safe from their indiscriminate, trigger-happy lunacy

I didn't realise it was the "acolyte supporters on this forum" that were the ones doing the shooting.

OK I give in, how exactly were they going to identify these guys as soldiers, I don't expect an answer because the question just rubbishes your post and most of the posts on this thread so far, may I also draw your attention to this

That's your opinion and your entitled to it. But it's not factual.

In any democracy people are innocent until proven guilty. They have to be arrested, charged, the evidence reviewed, if sufficient tried.

Now, how many of those carrying out attacks and murders on those protesting against the PTP / UDD gang have been arrested, let alone charged?

"TV yellow coup-mongers" - that would be the group that posts comments opposed to the fascist feudal clan dictatorship of the self enriching Chinese HiSo elite Shin gang would it?

I know you were attempting sarcasm, but the anti corrupt, puppet government of Thaksin, mob IS peaceful. It's their guards that are jumpy what with all the M-79 grenades, bombs and bullets the UDD are so well-stocked with that they keep firing them off. You would have an itchy trigger-finger, too, if you were on the wrong side of Thaksin/Jatuporn red thugs.
