Cabinet approves over Bt2.4 billion budget to assist northern flood victims

BANGKOK: -- The cabinet on Tuesday approved a budget of Bt2.41 billion to assist victims of recent flash floods and mudslides in Thailand's northern region.

The fund would be drawn from the government's earmarked contingent budget in the 2006 fiscal year, Deputy Government Spokswoman Sansanee Nakpong told a press conference after the cabinet's weekly meeting at Government House here.

Under the assistance plan, families of those killed or missing from the recent natural disaster will receive a cash support of Bt20,000 each, while those seriously and slightly injured will each get Bt5,000 and Bt2,000 respectively.

The Ministry of Interior's Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation will provide additional financial support of Bt15,000 each to the families of those killed in the disaster and Bt40,000 each if they were the families' leaders.

Those who have become disabled, as well as were seriously and slightly injured by the disaster will each receive the department's additional support of Bt10,000, Bt5,000 and Bt2,000 each.

Farmers whose farmlands were destroyed and badly destroyed by the floods would each receive a financial support of Bt243 and Bt720 per rai respectively from the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives, said Ms. Sansanee.

Business operators in the flood-hit areas would also received a financial support of at least Bt20,000 each from the government, she noted.

The cabinet also endorsed relief operations in the country's flood-hit areas in the nothern Uttaradit, Phrae, Sukhothai, Lampang and Nan Provinces by the government-run flood relief operation committee, said the deputy government spokeswoman.

Nakhon Sawan provincial governor granted 500,000 baht to flood victims in Uttaradit province

Nakhon Sawan (นครสวรรค์) provincial governor has granted 500,000 baht to Uttaradit(อุตรดิตถ์) provincial governor to assist flood affected residents.

Mr. Chanin Buaprasert (ชนินทร์ บัวประเสริฐ),Nakhon Sawan provincial governor and the provincial red cross, Pak Naam Pho foundation and local residents of Pak Naam Pho market have granted money of 500,000 baht through Uttaradit provincial governor Uprit Srichand(อุปฤทธิ์ ศรีจันทร์) as to assist flood stricken people in three districts, namely Muang(เมือง), Lap lae(ลับแล) and Tha Pla(ท่าปลา).

They have also granted 20,000 baht to the director of Uttaradit Vocational College as to assist flood affected students.

The govt will strat giving financial assistance to flood victims on June 15th

Permanent Secretary of the Prime Minister’s Office Rongphol Chareonphanthu (รองพล เจริญพันธุ์) has assigned officials in the flood-stricken provinces in the North to gather and inspect the details of inundated areas, so a budget can be allotted to assist the troubled people.

The officials have also been ordered to gather the information of the people who have been affected from the flood crisis.

Mr. Rongpol said that the families with missing or deceased members from the flooding incident will be given a 2,000 baht of financial support per person.

He added that the severely injured people will receive 5,000 baht each.

The relief efforts will start on June 15th.

It has been my observation that Thais are an extremely resourceful people. They will rebuild their lives with what they have at their disposal, and with little complaint. I wish them well in their time of turmoil and need. No matter what the Thai government does, there will be wealthy farangs sitting on their fat ar*e and complaining its not enough. New Orleans? Yea, we sure can do it better. :o
