Deputy Minister of Interior is concerned about the possibility of water shortage in Pattaya

Deputy Minister of Interior Somchai Sunthornwat (สมชาย สุนทรวัฒน์) has expressed his concern over the possibility of water shortage in Pattaya (พัทยา) as it may affect the investment and the tourism sector in the city.

Speaking after acknowledging the progress of tackling water shortage in Chonburi (ชลบุรี) Province, Mr. Somchai said he is personally concerned about the water problems in Pattaya. He fears that the problems will cause a slowdown in investment, and tourism will not be benefited.

Mr. Phisit Katepasuk (พิสิฐ เกตุผาสุข), the Governor of Chonburi, said the water supply development in Sriracha (ศรีราชา) is 64% completed.

At the same time, the water supply development in Pattaya is 49% done.

Since it is a well known fact that Pattaya has suffered water shortages for as many years as I care too remember, I wonder what effect the increased demands on supply are having versus say the water shortages three or four years ago vis à vie all of the new construction projects?

I certainly do not think it will slow down investment.

Somehow ‘water shortages’ seem to be left out of the sales pitch on all of the new developments. :o

Pattaya should be less concerned about getting more water...they should be working on how to conserve and better use what they have. Water is abundant in Thailand it's more to do with how it's supplied and used that's the problem. I've heard that in many countries up to 30% of water is lost before it even arrives at t's usage point due to leakages etc in the system.

Not too long ago we had another thread on this same topic. Somwhere in there a city official gauranteed that Pattaya would not experience any water shortages this year.

Well, despite all the rain we've received recently, and the fact that it is now the low season, maybe that official could explain why we've had the water cut-off in our neighbourhood twice in the last week ? (I just checked and the water is still off)

And now the Deputy Minister of the Interior is concerned ? That tells me someone somewhere maybe knows something they don't want to tell the rest of us ?

What is the status of that pipeline that was supposed to solve all our problems (assuming we get enough rain to fill the resevoirs) ?

You mean the pipeline that is supposed to pump highly polluted water from the Bang Pakong river near Chonburi all the way to the way less polluted reservoir? I don't know if they plan to treat it before it's pumped way over there but that would only solve a problem and create another. I guess they figured "Hey, better to have contaminated water than none at all!" :o and that's IF they have even thought about this.

I like the fact that you can't have an outboard motor up there but it's ok to back up the pick up truck in water up to the axles and wash it... :D Last time I went, there were two trucks pumping water and to my right a motorcycle and passenger van being washed. :D

I'd be a lot more concerned about the industrial, chemical and fertiliser pollution that is drained or wash off into the rivers and reservoirs around here than the odd outboard or car wash!

Have they started putting up the portable shower cabins yet like they did a few years ago when use of water was restricted by the government

That was a great idea but seem to remember that the local Thais didnt like the fact that they could only have one shower (ab-nam) a day while the farang tourists could have two.... :D ...25bt a go. :D

Got a bit silly however when they stopped everyone from swimming (both pools and SEA?) at the weekends and of course the biggest bloomer was when all the bars and hotels were ordered to ban the ice in the drinks....that was..... :o ...

They are now working installing bigger pipes on Siam Country Club. Estimated time to complete this project is one year.

Source Pattaya City Hall.

Maybe that explains why I have had no water for the last two days.

In the mean time showering from a water bin, and the gardens dying despite the odd showers.

Maybe time for moving on, although I do love it up this way, or install a large tank and pump.

Regarding the water situation, it has been on and off this way for nearly four years now up Soi Country Club. Plenty of water on over flowing on the Soi , but little from the taps.

Mike.

Songkran... :o

I don't know the figures but I'd be very surprised if SK throughout Chonburi used as much water over the entire period as places such as Amata Nakorn or Laem Chabang in one day - in real terms a drop in ther ocean I would suspect.....

I think Amata Nakorn draws it's on water supply from the Bang Pakong river as they have their own water treatment plant.

Working population in estate: Approx. 100,000

Water: Source capacity: 22 Mil. m3

Water treatment: Treatment plant capacity 23,000 Mil. m3/ day, industrial water conforms with the standards of the Ministry of Industry

He'll get over it, I think he's sleeping well enough with or without this concern anyway

Speaking of pipelines, there is a new underground HDPE pipeline being laid from Sattahip to Pattaya along Sukhumvit... although only about 16" in diameter, it could be for an additional water supply... :o

I doubt water shortages will affect investment anywhere near as much as the latest directive from his ministry on property ownership... :o

Woke up this morning, had water in the system.

2 hours later, no more water. Guess I had my allocation for the day already, and will have to wait until tomorrow to refill everything. :o

We haven't even gotten to the worst part of the season yet either. What's up with that <deleted> ?

Jai Dee,

Have you any idea what the large pipes are they are laying up the 3240 from Sukhumvit (TRUE building turning) up towards Mabprachan/Horseshoe point? They look lkike pretty big pipes - are they for water or sewerage/flood drainage?

I haven't seen them yet Mobi.

What manner of construction? Are they concrete or HDPE (high density poly-ethylene aka black plastic) or ???

No point or argument intended. I wanted to inform readers that water from the Amata Nakorn industrial park is no longer supplied by the Bang Pra reservoir. I just asked a Thai friend who confirmed this.

I think they are concrete, and pretty big. It has involved them completely re-building the road on the 3240 ( with the attendant chaos) and they run at least as far as Nong Prue Wat, and maybe further. It all started on Sukumvit (left side going into town, past the 3240 turning) but I don't know how far down, I only tuned in when when they started digging up the road home. :o Just thought you might know.

BTW they made the road one way going towards Sukhumvit, but becasue so many drivers ignored the diversioon signs and caused gridlock, they finally gave up and reversed the one way system. Democracy at work.:D

They seem like storm water drains to me.
