What I find interesting is that it's a relatively recent law- it's not something that existed for centuries and centuries, and it's only really in the 21st Century that accusations of it and court cases started flying about (an increase of over a thousand percent or something from previous time periods). Well

The law has been around for a long time it is just that over the last 8 years or so it is being used as a political tool.

One point of interest is that in the UK (as well as many other places in the West) there are groups of overseas Thais seeking to radicalise arriving Thais and show them the home truths.

In London there used be be one group who were at their height in the 70s/80s/early90s based around a well known Thai restaurant in Kensington, London who would produce their own Thai language paper, though the powerbase of the group would often shift between London and Stockholm (depending where the most influential exiles were at any one time). I wonder if these groups are still knocking around. I thought they were a thing of the past.

If found guilty for disrespect, I hope she go to jail to the limit of the punishment. 5 years for every disrespect. That will be good for her. Thailand do not have such disrespectful people. We all love the king more than our parents. Don't believe me, just ask anything Thai you know.

Do you mean including the thousands of Thais who left Thailand and live in ThaiTown in San Francisco for example??

Many of them do not share your unquestioning love......Just look online see what they think... oh no you can't can you because you live in Thailand...

Actually no one is exactly sure, Suriya seems to have multiple personalities Indian, Scottish, Thai and American, Male and Female. What is consistent, is the drivel that said person posts.

Sorry, you clearly are not reading what was written.

Of course she is going to be charged.

You are not reading what I wrote. I didn't say she WILL BE charged or she "is going to be" charged. I wrote she will be arrested and so on IF she returns to Thailand. But being charged has nothing to do with that.

.

And neither have you been, other than taking sentences out of context to suit your self righteousness.

"According to Mr. Surapong, Ms. Chatvadee has not been in contact with her parents for some time."

I'm not surprised, if I had parents like them I wouldn't like ever to see them.

She probably stopped sending money to them.

Once again please:

A post containing links from Chatwadee Amornpat on Facebook page has been removed as well as a reply. I don't think we need content posted on her Facebook posted here.

Also, remember there is to be No Discussion Of The Monarchy In Political Context included in that link is this:

- Do not discuss succession or speculate on the future of The Monarchy.

And to remind yet again of this forum rule:

1) Do not express disrespect of the King of Thailand or anyone else in the Thai royal family, whether living or deceased, nor to criticize the monarchy as an institution. Speculation, comments and discussion of either a political or personal nature are not allowed when discussing HM The King or the Royal family. Discussion of the lese majeste law or lese majeste cases is permitted on the forum, providing no comment or speculation is made referencing the royal family. To breach this rule will result in immediate ban. This rule also applies to links to external websites.

Ridiculous Law?This is Thailand and we live here as guests and obey their laws as guests. Every country in the world has laws.So if members think this is a stupid law then get on a street corner and tell people to change it . We will see what happens . This is the law of this country as I for one would never talk about the His Royal Majesty as he has done so much for this country something some people forget about.

What about these laws

1. In seven U.S. states, according to their constitutions, atheists are barred from holding public office.

2. Sodomy is illegal, in general, in Idaho, Utah, Michigan, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. In these states, sodomy is only illegal for homosexuals: Montana, Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas. Oral sex is often considered sodomy by many states, according to the Hebrew Bible. Except strangely, you don’t see people as equally outraged about this as they are about gay sex.

3. Interracial marriage was still illegal in Alabama in 2000.

4. Not until 2008 did the UN Security Council pass UN Security Council Resolution No. 1820 which declared rape and other forms of sexual violence a war crime, a crime against humanity, and a constitutive act with respect to genocide, arising from the conflict in the Balkans, in which violating women became an conspicuous weapon in the war.

5. Since 1986, US authorities have had the legal right to access any 180-day old email, without a warrant.

6. In Mobile, Alabama, it is against the law to throw confetti or spray silly string.

7. In Saudi Arabia, it is illegal for any woman to drive a car. Right now, it’s illegal for them to vote too. Apparently it will become legal in 2015 (how sweet).

8. In Dubai, extramarital sex is against the law and could result in jail sentences for over a year. Which means that in rape cases, both the victim and the perpetrator could end up being charged with the same crime.

9. In Saudi Arabia, there is no minimum age for marriage. In 2008, a Saudi court refused an 8-year-old girl, who asked for a divorce from her 58-year-old husband.

10. In 29 states in the US it is legal to fire someone for being gay.

11. In Greece, police are allowed to arrest anyone suspected of having HIV. Police are also allowed to force HIV testing, to publicize the names of HIV-positive people and to have them evicted from their homes.

12. In the Philippines you can be charged with the crime of “unjust vexation” for doing just that, vexing someone. And yes, it is as vague and arbitrary as it sounds.

13. The only two states where divorce is illegal are the Philippines and The Vatican.

14. In Thailand it is illegal to step on money.

15. In Singapore, selling non-medical chewing gum or chewing normal gum is a fine of $1000. A second offense costs $2000 and being forced to clean a public area of the city for a day. If a person litters three times, they must clean the streets wearing a bib that reads “I’m a litterer.” Even pharmacists who sell the medical gum and forget to ID get two years in jail. Spitting is also illegal and can result in arrest.

16. In July 2013 a law was passed in China that states it is illegal for adult children to not visit their parents “often” in China. They are also required to attend to their parent’s spiritual needs.

17. There is a law in South Carolina called the no “mock proposal” law, which states that anybody above the age of 16-years-old is not allowed to perform a proposal if they do not mean it.

18. In Montana, “proxy weddings” are allowed for those serving in the military, which means a friend can pretend to be the groom or the bride and the union will still be considered valid. In some cases both the bride and the groom are absent.

19. In Arkansas there still exists a law that was instated in the 1800s that states a husband is allowed to beat his wife, but only once a month.

20. In Rhode Island, a union can be considered invalid under the grounds that the party is deemed to be, collectively, an idiot or a lunatic.

21. In Arizona, having more than two vibrators in your home is illegal. If you own more than two in your house, you can be subject to criminal possession.

22. In Iowa, it is illegal for a man with a mustache to kiss a woman in public.

23. In Massachusetts it is deemed illegal for a woman to be on top during sex.

24. It is also apparently illegal in Massachusetts for a man and a woman who rent a room for the night to sleep in the nude.

43. In Florida, it’s illegal to fart in a public place after 6pm on a Thursday.

44. In England it is illegal to die in the House Of Parliament, but something tells me that if someone did do this, they wouldn’t face many repercussions?

50. In Honolulu, Hawaii it is illegal to sing loudly after sunset.

Not according to Thai law. In fact under Thai law, insulting any Royal globally can be punished.

yea, um....good luck getting that to happen and stick. Thankfully there are places in this world where one can say what they please without fear of prosecution...."under Thai Law"....do you really think the rest of the world is going to give a flying toss when Thailand comes a knocking telling them to hand over one of its own citizens for making disparaging remarks about the royals within said citizens OWN BORDERS..."under Thai Law" hahahaha that one just makes me laugh

99% of those "laws" you posted are actually only on the books...no one actually gets charges pressed for MOST of those anyways nowadays..unlike lese majeste laws which people are QUITE frequently still being charged under....so comparing that list of archaic and hardly enforceable laws is comparing apples to oranges

I very much doubt she gives a toss, she is a British Citizen, living in a country that allows freedom of speech. She's not likely to return here anytime soon.

Freedom when it is against the Thai Monarchy. If it is against UK or USA than there isn't that much freedom....see the Snowden situation where they threatened the newspapers

To Start of let me say I believe Edward Snowden is a hero....that being said, I can totally see the legitimacy the US government has in going after him, they feel he has threatened national security....this is NOT EVEN CLOSE to lese majeste charges which usually stem from nothing more than someone airing their opinion....like I said regardless of what you feel about Snowden what he did was far more than just airing an opinion and can't be held equal to someone saying something negative about the Monarchy in Thailand...

Oh my god. What an unholy mess that is. She will never come back to Thailand now.

These laws have to be changed.

why would she want to come back...we dont know what they were like towards her before..bet it wasnt all roses in that household..hope shes happy in london..i dont condone what she is meant to have said but with parents like that who needs enemies..wai2.gif
Well home is home. I though thailand could become home, but in the end it was a let down. Stories like this confirm why.

Why does Thailand persist in shooting itself in the foot to achieve nothing. What are they scared of? One person saying their opinion is enough to justify ridiculing themselves?

Idiotic to force parents to charge their daughter to show.loyalty. If it was the communist purges or north Korea we would a be shaking our heads in disgust.

Very well said....What exactly are they scared of??? and good point about North Korea..we would all be raising our hands crying "what a travesty and against human rights" if it happened in another place...but Thailand is very good about being under the guise of democracy when it is clearly anything but

25. In Virginia, it is illegal for a man to kick a woman out of bed.

26. In Britain it is illegal to handle a salmon in suspicious circumstances.

27. In Vermont, a wife needs the husband’s permission to wear false teeth.

28. In North Carolina couples must have sex in the missionary position and with the curtains pulled.

29. In Britain, it is illegal to import potatoes into England or Wales if you have reasonable cause to believe that they are Polish.

30. In Oregon, talking dirty while having sex is illegal. Even though they don’t really specify what qualifies as dirty talk.

31. In Utah you can marry your cousin, but only if you are both over the age of 65. Because, you know, when you turn 65 you’re known to have impeccable judgment.

32. In Britain you are not allowed to let your pet mate with any pet form the royal house.

33. In Utah, a husband is responsible for his wife’s actions as long as he is with her at the time of her “actions.”

34. In Kentucky, a woman cannot remarry the same man more than three times.

35. In parts of India, a man who is in debt can offer up his wife until the debt is paid.

36. In Greece, if anyone wants to get married, the law requires those to publish their wedding notice in a newspaper (written in Greek) or on the City Hall notice board.

37. In France, it is stated as illegal to marry a dead person.

38. In Britain, it is illegal to carry a plank along the pavement.

is anyone following this story about the journalist who has been charged with the slander for suggesting the Thai Navy is a complicit party in trafficking of Rohyingas? I mean seriously? "Ok, you caught us and potentially will make us lose face , now we are going to punish you for making such facts known" It seems like this country will go to just about any lengths to avoid anyone or anything from airing its dirty laundry...

I'd love to see Thailand file a report to INTERPOL "please please catch this slanderous godawful woman".....hey the rest of the world has a lot more to worry about than what some British citizen said about the Thai king in her own country....

Who says Thais have dirty laundry

Careful. Everyone knows their sweat smells of chanel no. 5 and the s*** is flavoured of hand made truffle.

They don't have dirty laundry because no one can tell anyone they had some.

They would probably do a better job of filing this to Interpol than the last time they tried it.

I can just imagine the Interpol officer trying to write it all down with a straight face.

but don't you understand, a prosecution for a broken lese majeste law is far more of a priority than Ukraine, Syria, Climate Change all put together....jeesh, I thought everyone knew that Thailand was the center of the Universe!

If found guilty for disrespect, I hope she go to jail to the limit of the punishment. 5 years for every disrespect. That will be good for her. Thailand do not have such disrespectful people. We all love the king more than our parents. Don't believe me, just ask anything Thai you know.

Actually, what Thais tell each other can be quite different from what they will tell non-Thais. This is especially true when talking to Thais outside of Thailand. As a Thai, you will never know this. The LM laws have created a culture of fear that erects barriers among the Thais themselves. And many, like yourself, are not even aware of it because you are content to live in your fishtank.

Nice one...I recommend Suriya takes sometime to travel outside of said fish tank and experience what life is like for the other 99% of the people in the world who ARE NOT Thai and DO NOT think like Thais

So she was willing to sacrifice being able to come to Thailand and eat all the delicious foods just so she could speak her mind about the monarchy? Does not seem like a fair trade off.

There's delicious food aplenty in the UK. I'm sure she'll enjoy it immensely while enjoying her civil freedoms and liberties while not being bound to a restrictive archaic social system and structure.

So then why aren't you in the UK?

Not according to Thai law. In fact under Thai law, insulting any Royal globally can be punished.

Since when is there Thai law in London? How irrelevant.

if you are "Thai at Heart" then Thai law applies in London. if he takes a dump in London and not using a bum gun he's had it. minimum sentence 5 years hard labour in an Issaan coal mine.
