What is it?

I saw (frozen fillets) cheap so I bought some to see what it's like.

Have you tried this fish?

How you cook it?

Salt water/ fresh water / farmed raised / bottom feeder like catfish ... what?

I am thinking of boiling it in a spicy soup not because I know it would work in such a dish but that's the fish dish I want to make.

It;s a salt water bottom feeder, but not a trash eater.. A long time ago I caught white grunt in the gulf of Mexico in the southern US. It is excellant fileted and pan fried. I think that the Thais fry them whole just like any other fish that's big enough. Hope that what you bought is actually grunt fish and not pangasious with a differenyt name on the package.

Thanks. So it wouldn't work boiled? I guess I'll find out. I also suspect mislabeling with any fish but it was sold at a place that also had pangasious.

I've been in Tesco and have seen frozen pangasious, 3 filets in a pack for 129 baht/kilo right next to the frozen "dory", 1 filet to the pack 329 baht/kilo. Guess what, it was the same fish, anoother name for pangasious is "cream dory" not at all related to "john dory". I'm sure that it will work boiled, it just might not be the texture that you want when it's finished.

When I buy fish I filet myself and my wife boils the head and bones for soup. It doesn't matter to her what type of fish it is. I call it fish bone soup just like the chicken soup she makes is chicken bone soup and then there's pork bone soup.

Silver Grunt is pretty specific though.

A Thai translation also calls it mangrove snapper or white snapper.

Or scientific name: Pomadasys kaakan

Or Small Spotted Javelin Fish.

Anyway, it was so cheap.

No biggie.
