BANGKOK, 30 April 2014 (NNT) – Thai police have seized 5,000 kilograms of marijuana, worth up to 500 million baht.

Pathum Thani police raided a warehouse in Lam Luk Ka District where they found approximately 5 tons of weed that were waiting to be smuggled out to Netherlands.

The owner of the warehouse, identified as Sirisak Boonsiri (47) was there when the police arrived. However, the police found the owner’s wife, 34, who claimed she did not know that those were packs of weed, admitted that her husband had been in exporting business for more than 2 years.

According to the authorities, the marijuana was neatly wrapped in moisture control bags. At this stage, the police have confiscated the drugs and all of the packaging equipment. The police also found some fingerprints that could lead to the perpetrators.

Does the NNB even know what they are writhing? Normally the street value of 1 kilo marijuana here in Thailand is 20,000 THB. With this lot it is 100,000 THB. (500,000,000/5000)

5,000 kg x 20,000 = 100,000,000 baht .... after all its only weed !

Something stinks about this story. Probably didn't pay the tea money. Anyway, big party downwind on bonfire night.

You don't really think they are going to burn this, do you? This bust only means that the weed has gone from one distributor to another.

damm right it has..bib must be rubbing their hands..nice that the wife grassed him up though..loyalty thats what i love over here..

I have a friend who would love to find your street.

When he was last visiting, he wanted to get something to smoke, and the closest city to me is Pattaya. I told him that the only place I know of is Walking St, so off we went, even though I strongly tried to talk him out of it. He got what he wanted but paid 600 baht for what must have been about 5 grams. At that price, a kilogram can be sold for 120,000 baht. I admit that Walking Street is likely the worst and most expensive place to get weed, but I really think that your claim of 1 kilogram only costing 20,000 packaged for the street is far too low.

Don't forget that the actual news source headline said "up to" 500 million. I have noticed that TV Forum (Webfact) likes to sensationalize the headings they use to get as much interest and impact as possible, so here they seem to have chosen to omit those two words.

With street value I don't mean the amount the end user is paying. Normally street value refers to the price it costs to put it into the market.

THB 20,000/kg is the value growers (or large traders) sell to dealers. The police in Thailand normally uses this value when the catch a big fish. I am not talking about what the end user has to pay for it.

Yes I also think the government and media like to inflate figures in order to get more attention.

Where does Holland buy it's legal weed from?

In Holland, legal weed is bought legally from guys who grow it illegally.

Sounds a bit like a country I know, fits btwn Malaysia and Burma.

Soooo many things wrong with this, first that is way overpriced and even if you sold those 5 killos in 100 baht blocks, still no. Secondly to Holland, seriously? Sending shoddy brick weed to Holland where they have top class bud with no seeds or whatever else is in there? Original Thai Stick is nice, but that stuff is rare these days.

Really? Are you sure? Here's the definition from the Collins-Cobuild people, and these guys know a thing or two about the English language.

street value

The street value of a drug is the price that is paid for it when it is sold illegally to drug users. (JOURNALISM) n-sing usu N of amount

...cocaine with a street value of two million pounds.

Here's another source. This is what I get when I just type "street value definition" at Google.

street val·ue
noun
  1. the price for which something, especially an amount of drugs, that is illegal or has been obtained illicitly can be sold.

Once again, it doesn't match your definition. It matches mine. But that's the great thing about forums. You can now provide the copy-pastes from your sources confirming your definition.

Why would Holland import crap Thai weed? Seriously its like importing piss water when you have a lake full of Glenfiddich.

The coffeeshops in Netherlands offer many different cannabis strains. Possibly this seized cache was a supply of Thai Stick:

A Thai stick is a form of cannabis from Thailand that was popular during the late 1960s and 1970s. It consisted of premium buds of seedless marijuana which were skewered on stems. Several rows of fiber found in the stalk of the marijuana plant were then used to tie the marijuana to the stem to keep it in place.[1] Thai stick bud may also be tied around bamboo sticks with a piece of string known as a “rasta hair.”[2]

The Thai sticks exhibited considerably higher potency in comparison with other cannabis available in Western countries at the time. This added potency was rumored to be caused by the Thai sticks being dipped in opium. However, the more widely accepted reason is that Thai cannabis growers had for hundreds of years selected seeds from their strongest plants, which coupled with Thailand's long growing season, high temperatures and, rich volcanic soil, conspired to produce an exceptionally potent product. A number of reasons have been cited for the decline of the Thai stick; stricter policing of cannabis cultivation; dilution of traditional cannabis populations by earlier maturing, less psychoactive cultivars imported from Pakistan and Afghanistan; the burgeoning indoor growing industry in target markets; and the reduction of military troop transports (which was the primary means of export) between Thailand, particularly Bangkok, and the United States, at the end of the Vietnam War in 1975.

In modern terminology, Thai stick often refers to marijuana tied to stem as documented above and then dipped into a hashish oil, a potent cannabis derivative which saturates the buds and lends to a stronger smoke. Some California cannabis clubs sell this product. Originally, this was a frequent practice of the 1970s with the actual Thai stick. There are still some surviving recipes from Cambodia where high quality marijuana and hash oil are used.

As I've already said Thai stick is rare these days and that really doesn't look much like good Thai stick. You can even see stems and stalk compressed into those bricks in the image, it is just regular brick weed by the looks of things
