I start work soon as an English Teacher for a government school in BKK. I've done some research and know that a tourist visa can be converted, however, my current tourist visa doesn't have enough days left on it to convert to a non-immigrant B visa. As I understand you need at least 15 or 18 days remaining to convert it. I had a 60 day tourist visa and have already extended it for an extra 30 days so I definitely need a new tourist visa. Is it possible to convert a 30 day stamp on arrival to a non-immigrant B? Leaving the country then flying back in is a lot simpler and cheaper than going to say Vientianne to get a 60 day tourist visa.

Any help and advice will be much appreciated.

Since you didn't started yet, it will probably be easier to apply for a non-B visa abroad to start with. Often that is a lot easier.

For a conversion you will need to have all the paperwork in order, inclusing the teaching license (waiver), work permit, etc.

With paperwork from the school you could out for the non-b visa, For teaching you don't need the work permit to get the visa. Requirements here for getting it on Vientiane's website: http://vientiane.thaiembassy.org/vientiane/en/consular/consular_check/ You will not need the police certificate they don't ask for it.

I not sure at all that you will be able to do the conversion at all at immigration. Most people have to go out the visa. For immigration you would certainly need the work permit application done and approved. I am not sure you be able to get everything done with just a 30 day entry.

If you are from a G7 country you can get a 30 day entry from a border run.

I start work on the 12th and the director is on vacation until then so it's not possible for me to get the paperwork to get the non-B visa out of the country so my only option is a conversion. My school have promised to take care of all of the paperwork for the conversion.

Ubonjoe - thanks for that. I'm from the UK and hadn't realised that we can now get a 30 day entry from a boarder. If I can convert this to a non-B then this will be my best option. I have spoken to a friend that has worked here for years and he seems to think that I won't be able to though. I just want to see what TV members think.

Not actually from a boarder, but from Immigrations after crossing a border and then returning to Thailand.

Believe it is against forum rules to make fun of a "teachers" use of English even if the "teacher" claims UK nationality !smile.png

The assumption regarding protecting "creative" spelling from comments is meant to spare those who for whom English is a second language ... quite rightly. If someone claims to be accepting a salary to teach English, a little ribbing should be tolerated. Certainly they have boarders and borders in UK.
