jayenram Posted April 12, 2003 Posted April 12, 2003 Whilst I appreciate that many Khmers drink beer with ice (a disgusting habit), who is telling the local bar owners/managers that it is expensive to leave the fridge on continuously? One owner told me that she 'knew' her Coca Cola fridge cost Bht 600.00 per month to run if she left it on overnight. Virtually all the bar owners here turn off the fridge at closing time and restart it at opening time the following day. So if you want a cold beer, you need to visit the premises at least 3-4 hours after opening time. Who said "ignorance is bliss"?
bangna_man Posted April 12, 2003 Posted April 12, 2003 I don't mind a few chunks of ice in my glass of Beer Leo. Stop whining.
Rinrada Posted April 13, 2003 Posted April 13, 2003 Last time I was in Pocklington we had ice in the John Smiths...still tasted rotten. I liked the ice.
jayenram Posted April 15, 2003 Author Posted April 15, 2003 John Smiths has never been the best beer in Yorkshire; far from it. Try Timothy Taylors Best, Tetleys, Sam Smiths, Black Sheep,. However, I suppose it's a case of each to his own ???
Rinrada Posted April 15, 2003 Posted April 15, 2003 Agree Timothy Taylors,Tetleys (u-recon), Sam Smiths, Black Sheep,.are great local beers and I would never knock them. As you say it's a case of each to his own and I tend to prefer the Cold Stuff. The first time I actually managed to get served in a pub was just outside Churchfenton (Yorks) back in the dawn of time (was about 14-15)and from there on in it was all along to the "Olde Star Inn" on the Stonegate, the Black Bull and the Freemasons..great.Life as they say would never be the same again.Fortunately one of my brothers lives oop Narth-York-Pock, and Beverley so we do the rounds quite often. No 1 at the moment must be "Nellies" in Bev.Lager at £1-25 a pint with real ale on tap under a £1 a pint and the place still has gas lighting.
jayenram Posted April 16, 2003 Author Posted April 16, 2003 Last time I was drinking in Yorkshire, I think all t'pubs had gas lighting. I remember the Ram's Head in Denholme (clost to the Penine Way/M62 crossover) where they were still serving beer direct from the barrel into a 2 pint jug and then decanting into pint glasses. I cannot remember which beer though. Oh well, back to my Beer Chang.
pschef Posted April 19, 2003 Posted April 19, 2003 I too remember last time in Yorkshire jayenram, somewhere about the same location. I am from Derbyshire pretty close to your place, they still serve 6x from the keg. the old girl nips down to here cellar and decants jugs as required, no cooler or ice down there. One of the things I do miss about home, Okay back to my beer chang. :blues:
PETER THE EATER Posted April 22, 2003 Posted April 22, 2003 When we fought the blighters at Spion Kop they couldn't even write their bloody names! Hic!
PattayaSteve Posted April 23, 2003 Posted April 23, 2003 I've been drinkind "iced cold" beer for decades. It's a SE Asian tradition.
Thetyim Posted April 23, 2003 Posted April 23, 2003 I drank the beer in Yorkshire once. Can't remember the name of the pubs Can't remember the name of the beers Can't remember walking home Bloody good beer
elliss Posted April 23, 2003 Posted April 23, 2003 be -ware of yorkshire man buying you beer , just live in hope
bartender18 Posted April 29, 2003 Posted April 29, 2003 Ive noticed the turning off of the beer fridge at night, and it really affects the taste, particually Heiniken, maybe because it has less presevertive.Often outside Bkk Heinies taste sour,i am sure its the reason.
jayenram Posted May 2, 2003 Author Posted May 2, 2003 Yorkies are similar to Scots. Except the generousity has been taken away.
wolf5370 Posted May 19, 2003 Posted May 19, 2003 Doesn't it cost more to cool a warm fridge each day, than to just leave the thing on ticking over? Surely, this must also make the paper labels go moldy etc and means the fridge needs cleaning more often (oops forgot we were talking about LOS then). Not too keen on ice in my beer either. Much better to dump the nam keng in a serious helping of Mekong instead!
MaiChai Posted May 19, 2003 Posted May 19, 2003 The reason why ice is put in the beer is because a cold beer in TL will become warm very quickly. So its rather pointless chilling the beer. You will work this out if you stay here long enough.

sevinnow Posted May 19, 2003 Posted May 19, 2003 I think it was my gran who said "ignorance is bliss" but I remember a wack round the head as she finished the quote"but it is no excuse" ! Ice in beer....maybe the flat type they save in London at 400 baht a pint (just for good measure you understand) Sev
jayenram Posted May 23, 2003 Author Posted May 23, 2003 If your beer gets warm in a 1/2 pint glass, you're not drinking it fast enough!
ThaiAdventure Posted May 23, 2003 Posted May 23, 2003 If your beer gets warm in a 1/2 pint glass, you're not drinking it fast enough! Obviuosly not a Brit then. Only girls drink 1/2 pints!
Rinrada Posted May 23, 2003 Posted May 23, 2003 I always recon the ice improves the taste of the beer especially in the boondocks of eastern Cambodia where it comes on a wheel barrow with a dirty old sack covering it (keeps the flies off)and has lots of green slimey stuff en-crousted within....luv-ely
jayenram Posted May 26, 2003 Author Posted May 26, 2003 That's why your beer gets warm (drinking out of pint glasses). Buy your Chang in 640 ml bottles. Fill up a half pint glass, then ask the promo girl/waitress to keep the rest in the fridge until you're ready (not usually long). QED. BTW, I'm not a Brit, I'm from Yorkshire.

My beer doesn't get warm in 1 pint glasses.....doesn't last long enough! I buy it in 4 pint jugs. 1 pint to drink, 3 pints in the fridge. You are right in one aspect though. You're not a Brit- by ecky thump! Even the girls in Yorkshire drink pints!
markoinbangkok Posted May 26, 2003 Posted May 26, 2003 Ice in my Beer Chang is a must... Chang is quite strong, and I like to drink it cold. Adding ice is the perfect solution...
jayenram Posted May 27, 2003 Author Posted May 27, 2003 Eyup narthen, sithi There must be a double skinned mug available with water (or other liquid) in the skin and which could be frozen before filling the glass. Ideal solution without compromising the taste and strength. Whatever happened to those re-freezable plastic ice-cubes by the way? We had them in UK 20 years ago.
wolf5370 Posted May 27, 2003 Posted May 27, 2003 Think too many people got poisened when the plastic split and cheimcally treated water was mixed with their chemically treated (created?) beer! Some places put water in the glass and freeze it - i.e. solid ice at in the bottom inch of the glass. Obviously this melts too eventually, but because it is not in a cube floating abount and surrounded by liquid, it takes longer and doesn't water doen the beer. Only seems to happen in some hotels and restaurants, suppose to wuch work (and freezer space) for bars to do this.

Surely, this must also make the paper labels go moldy etc and means the fridge needs cleaning more often (oops forgot we were talking about LOS then). Not too keen on ice in my beer either. Much better to dump the nam keng in a serious helping of Mekong instead! That was the main point of my original post, the Thai idea that it is cheaper to turn the fridge off and on each day. It has always been my contention that it is more economical to leave it ticking over continuously, particularly if kept full (of Chang, of course). My local expat landlord keeps 5 fridges and a couple of freezers and would never dream of turning any off.

The only local joint here that does that is one of the (100% straight) thai massage parlours. However, as I regularly drink there, they keep one glass in the freezer without ice for me. And the Chang is only Bht 40.00 a pint and they never turn the fridge off.

tuky Posted August 14, 2004 Posted August 14, 2004 The faster you drink the less ice you need to use. One big chunk should last 3 to 4 bottles My father in law and I get a great laugh when my wifes asks for a beer. I stack her glass up with so much ice she can't get her lips onto the rim, hence she can't take a drink. Boy the in law gets a great laugh from that, it has been a little bonding thing for us for a long time now, occasionally I do it to him and it is just as funny.
